Sorry, Joe, plenty of Clark's, but no Wilmot Clark. Jackie
Could you do a look-up for Philip McConnell? (He died in Orange Co., 1813 and served in the Rev. War in the 1700's. I have no date of death or marriage for him.) He is noted in 1775 Tax Assessment Roll for Orange Co., Dist. 8. Is he noted in the Register of members, marriage record or baptisms? (He is my 5X great grandfather.) Also William CRABTREE, b. in Goshen, 1785; died Sussex Co., NJ, 1859. Register of members? baptisms? Marriage record? He married Elizabeth McCONNELL--daughter of Philip McCONNELL, above. Father was also William CRABTREE from Goshen. I have no dates for him nor name of wife. Perhaps a marriage record for this William Crabtree? Noted in register of members? baptisms? Thank you. Jackie, I would love it if you could look up Isaac VAN BRUNT, 1789-1840, and Hannah LUCKEY, 1789-1840. Both were born in 1789, they were married in 1810, and they were in the area until at least 1831, when their youngest child, David, was born. Thank you very much, Maureen P.S. If you happen to run across anyone named LUCKEY in the church records (or anywhere in Orange County), I would be very interested. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, March 20, 2007 3:54 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [NYORANGE] Will do look-ups - First Presbyterian Church, Goshen, NY Hello everyone ~ If anyone would like a look-up in the book "The Early Records of the First Presbyterian Church at Goshen, New York", I would be happy to do so. My Swarthout ancestors lived on Sugar Loaf at time of Revolution. Can anyone who now KNOWS Orange County write and tell me the "nearest" cemeteries to this particular area in Orange County? [email protected]
Seeking parents of JOHN JORDAN born 6 Mar 1764 where I know not. He died 26 Jan 1850 Pike, Wyoming Co, NY, but buried in family lot in Friendship, Allegany Co., NY. He married 15 Sep 1785 probably in or near Goshen, Orange NY Julia SWARTOUT born 18 Nov 1769 daughter of Jacobus SWARTOUT who before and during the Revolution lived in Sugar Loaf which is now in town of Chester, Orange Co., NY but then in town of Warwick, Orange Co., NY. Following children born to John and Julia: Michael 1786 in Orange Co; William 1788; Jesse 1790; James 1791; hn 1792; Andrew; 1795; Betsey 1797; Isaiah 1799; Sally (Patty) 1801; JACOB 1803; Julia Margaret 1805; Unnamed son 1807 at which time Julia probably died because she does not appear in 1810 census. John/Julia do not appear in the 1790 census of NYS in their own home with two sons nor have I found them in PA, NJ or any N.E. state. By 1800, JORDAN family residing in Cherry Valley, Otsego Co., NY. >From there, Michael, William and Jesse settled in and died in Steuben Co. James and John settled town of Cuba, Allegany Co., NY; Isaiah, after living with his brother, Michael in Steuben Co., migrated on to Allegany Co and he and brothers Andrew and JACOB settled in town of Wirt of Allegany Co., NY. Betsey (Elizabeth) Jordan married Sebastion WELLER and lived in Canajoharie, Montgomery Co., NY. Sally married John DYGERT and lived in Montgomery Co, NY. Julia Margaret married Charles PHELPS, migrated to Pike, Wyoming Co. and it was at her home that JOHN died in 1850. In 1840, JOHN JORDAN is still residing at Cherry Valley but by 1848 has migrated to town of Wirt and because he died before 1850 census was taken, it has been family tradition that he lived with his son, JACOB, but his will probate states he died at home of his daughter in Wyoming Co. ANY help would be appreciate on these above mentioned families.... Ruth Jordan Thoden [email protected]
Hi Robin.Do you know what year St. Mary's on South St. opened? Thank you,Jim Norris E-mail: [email protected]
Locust Hill is close to Sugar Loaf. http://www.bellvale.net/cem_locust_hill.html There are many small family cemeteries left near Chester. Many of the small ones in Warwick were relocated after 1867 when the larger Warwick Cemetery opened. Femi Roecker www.bellvale.net

I had sent a previous email but I don't think it went thru. I was born and raised in Newburgh. I am also of Catholic and Protestant Irish heritage. Back in the 1800s most Irish Catholics went to St. Patrick's on Grand St. and St. Mary's on South St. Early on the first St. Patrick's church was on Broadway across from St. Patrick's Cemetery. It later moved to Grand St. The Catholic Italians went to Sacred Heart on Rt 9W and most Eastern Europeans went to St. Francis of Assisi on Benkard Ave. The Protestant Irish went to St. George's on Grand St. and also later on Good Shepherd on Broadway. Back in the 1800s the people tended to go to the closest church to where they lived because they had to walk. Case in point, my Protestant side lived on upper Broadway/Washington/Ann St. area in Newburgh. They went to St. George's till Good Shepherd opened up in the 1890s because it was only a couple of block away from where they lived. St. George's has been around since the early 1800s. St. Patrick's opened up a little later around the 1840/50s. My Irish have been going there since 1860. St. Mary's opened around 1875 and Sacred Heart and St. Francis was later. Later on a lot of the Polish, Eastern Europeans lived in the Town of Newburgh called Ducktown and St. Francis was the closest church. Catholic Germans tended to go to St. Patricks's. Hope this helps a little. Robin
If you are looking to check St. Francis or St. Mary's records in Newburgh, I would do it right away. Last year the Archdiocese decided to close several churches and St. Francis and St. Mary's are on the list. They just handed down a decision a month ago and they reserved judgement on these two churches till later. When that will be we don't know. They want to close St. Mary's and make St. Francis a satellite church of Sacred Heart which means it will do special occasions but there won't be a priest there and they won't offer services. Who knows what will happen to records. Robin
I was born and raised in Newburgh. When I was growing up the predominately Irish churches were St. Patrick's on Grand St. and St. Mary's on South St. The Protestant Irish tended to go to St. George's on Grand St. or Good Shepherd on Broadway. The Italian Catholic church tended to be Sacred Heart on Rt 9w. St. Francis of Assisi on Benkard Ave. tended to have a lot of Eastern Europeans. St. Patrick's and St. George's have been around since the mid1800s. I believe St. Mary's started around 1875 and Sacred Heart was a little later. Back in the 1800s most of Newburgh was limited towards the waterfront and people went to church close to where they lived. My Prostestant Irish always lived on lower Broadway so they went to St. George's. When Good Shepherd opened in the early 1890s on upper Broadway, they went there cause it was closer to them. Hope this helps you. Robin From: kristine theisen-brown <[email protected]> Reply-To: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: [NYORANGE] Catholic Church in Newburgh??
