For anyone interested in more on the Coetus/Conferentie dispute and its interesting parallel to the Tory/Patriot conflict that led to the Revolutionary War see Adrian Leiby's "The United Churches of Hackensack and Schraalenburgh, N.J., 1686-1922" and "The Huguenot Settlement at Schraalenburg" Jim Keegan ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone. Maureen, your comment gave me a good laugh! But I believe the basis of the separation between the Dutch Reformed church and the Irregular Church (still a Reformed church) was the coetus/conferentie dispute which itself pretty much paralleled the Patriot/Loyalist dispute. The coetus-Patriot-Pietist group wanted clergy trained and ordained in this country, while the conferentie were the more status quo traditionalists, who believed that the clergy should be ordained in the Netherlands in order to be fit to lead the church, and likewise were more apt to respect the established British government. I have read that the Baylor Massacre in 1778 contributed to a revulsion against the British, making patriots of many who had been uncommitted or even Loyalists, and bringing the irregular church to an end. Yes the Rome Cemetery still exists. Carol Van Buren Town of Minisink -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Fred Saar Sent: Monday, March 26, 2007 8:22 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [NYORANGE] Rome Cemetery The book the Cemeteries of the Town of Minisink includes a listing for the Rome Cemetery. It says it is located on South Plank Road .8 mile south of Rome School Road. In the listing are four people who have stones in Union Cemetery on South Plank Road near the intersection of Rt 6. The stones in Union Cemetery are newer so maybe they were removed? Does anyone know if the Rome Cemetery still exists? Re Tappan Irregular Church Google it and get to http://www.bergenhistoricbooks.com/ChurchRecords.html As you will see there are a bunch of books - (for sale) - but that means that a good genealogical Library may have some. I have seen some of those in the DAR libe in DC. Also for the Demarests - ditto - several revisions of a substantial Genealogy. Happy hunting! Maureen, Darned if I know... lol. But the IGI at http://familysearch.org has a Batch Number for this one C510101 that covers Baptisms from 1766-1778. Unfortunately, my DEMAREST's are not listed (sigh). Jackie ---------------------------------------- Maureen wrote... Sorry, Steve,,, no Warren's or Warring's listed. Jackie
Hi, Sorry, there is only one (1) McKinney listed in the entire book - Record of Deaths - Jan 3 1819, Matthew McKinney 70, Old age. Jackie P.S. I meant to ask... please tell me about your Demarest's in Bergen Co. We might be related - one never knows :-)
Sorry, Sheila, The only McKune in the entire book is a Phebe McKune who m. Danniel Case on Feby 12 1782. I looked for all possible spellings. Jackie
K. Powell... and interested list members :-), Thanks For the tips on Demarest re: Bergen Co. NJ and the Tappan Irregular Church in Rockland Co. NY. My Eunice's grandfather, Jacob B. Demarest was born 1723 in Hackensack, Bergen Co.; died in Goshen ?? (not sure). Eunice's father John is said to have been born in Goshen in 1745 but maybe not (no proof of this). The date and place of his marriage to Abigail Thorp - 1774 Goshen is also suspect. My Eunice was b. abt 1790 supposedly in Goshen as was all of her brothers and sisters... except for one - Samuel b. 8 Apr. 1801 in Middletown, Monmouth, NJ. Samuel's birth in Monmouth makes sense since his mother was born in Monmouth (1757) and the family must have decided to return there for whatever reason. I have no doubt in my mind, however, that John and Abigail were residents of Goshen or other nearby town for a number of years. Hopefully someone on the list will recognize this family? I would love to have some documentation... So, now, back to lookups at the First Presby. Church. I will get to your McKinney's eventually. :-) Jackie
