Program for Tuesday, May 22, 2007, 7PM at New City Library Genealogical Society of Rockland County Topic: Bannerman Castle Speaker: Barbara Gottlock co-author of Bannerman Castle. On maps it is Pollopel Island: 6 3/4 acres of mostly rock; 1,000 feet from the eastern shore of the Hudson just north of Cold Spring; 50 miles north of New York City. During the Revolutionary War, patriots unsuccessfully tried to stop the British from advancing north of the island by sinking 106 upright logs tipped in iron points in the Hudson. Later, General George Washington approved plans to use the island as a military prison. The castle's builder, Frank Bannerman VI, was a Scottish patriot, very proud of his descent from one of the few MacDonald's to survive the massacre at Glencoe in 1692. Acting on behalf of the Crown, a rival clan, the Campbells, slaughtered all MacDonald males ages 12-70. One escaped to the hills with the clan banner -- and from that day on, his family name was Bannerman. The Bannerman family immigrated to the United States in 1854, when Frank was three, and settled in Brooklyn. At the close of the Civil War, the U.S. government auctioned off military goods by the ton, mostly to be scrapped for their metal. Young Frank was one of the first to realize that much of what was being sold had a market value higher than scrap. Under his guidance, Bannerman's became the world's largest buyer of surplus military equipment. When they outgrew their store at 501 Broadway in NYC, they looked around for a larger and safer location in which to store their ammunition. Pollopel Island was selected. Frank Bannerman personally designed the island's buildings, docks, turrets, garden walls and moat in the style of old Scottish castles. Almost all of it was done without professional help from architects, engineers and contractors. And all of it was elaborately decorated, from biblical quotations cast into all fireplace mantles, to a shield between the towers with a coat of arms, and a wreath of thistle leaves and flowers. The castle was constructed between 1901 and 1918. It was primarily an ammunitions storage site but the Bannermans summered there too. Attend this interesting talk about a little known architectural wonder and learn about the struggle to maintain its existence. I am researching for more info on my 4th great grandfather, Dr. James Osborn. He was born August 13, 1748 in Orange Co. NY. He m. Asenath Brady who was born ca. 1752 in the same county. Who were her parents? I would like to know more about both of them... especially in his role as Doctor and who his parents were. I know later in life, he moved to NY and also PA... Who went with him? Did he help in the Am. Rev? Some sources say he had a disability that kept him from going to battle, but he did help with the wounded soldiers. Are there county books/resources that tell about the early Orange Co. NY residents, their roles in the Am. Rev.? Any help appreciated. Thanks, Ellie Stites Swanger ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
It is possible my ggg grandparents William Willis Pearce and Mary Shepherd were married in Orange Co., not Sussex Co., NY in January 1791. What is the shortest route to find a marriage record for that period in Orange Co. Port Jervis Hist. Soc., or contact clerk? Thank you for any help. S. Looking for anyone researching the REYNS surname in Orange Co. especially around the Rock Tavern/New Windsor/Town of Hamptonburgh/Washingtonville area. I am researching Henry Reyns and Camille Reyns. I think they are brothers but I am not sure. Camille was born in Hoboken Belgium abt. 1889 and emigrated in 1910. He later married Maria/Marie/Mary Crabb. Henry was born abt. 1897 in Hoboken Belgium. He later emigrated and was married to Alma Krum. If anyone else is researching these families, please email. Thank you. Robin
Hi Susan. Along the way in your Tompkins Co., NY research, have you perhaps picked up on any KELL(E)Y family connections?? I have been searching for the family of Benjamin KELL(E)Y b c 1772 NY. He is supposed to have been from Tompkins, Cayuga, Seneca area moving to Wayne Co., PA by 1822. Susan, What a line of Drakes you have! My, My. And So confusing with the names repeating. Was wondering if you may have run into a parent for my Col. John Drake b.1773 d. 12 April 1841. of Sussex Co., NJ who married a Ann Collins . Don't know where she was from. Probably married around 1790. Children may have included Deborah b. 1776, Joseph Collins Drake b. 1812, Nathaniel b. 1808, Anna, Rachel, William, Elizabeth b.1816 . Thanks in advance. I did some research on this Francis Drake awhile back. The Hipolite family is living next to the Simon Drake family early 1800s. This Drake family is from the New Jersey Drake line. I feel that Francis was probably from this line. There were also several other Drake families from New Jersey living in the general vicinity of Catlin and Catherine, Tioga Co. (Later Tompkins Co.) I have a lot of data on the various Francis Drakes living in NY from 1700-1850. We have also done DNA testing on several lines and descendents that has helped seperate the groups. However, I still am unable to find anything on my Francis P. Drake prior to about 1839 when he and his family show up in Green Creek Township, Sandusky Co., Ohio. Francis A. Drake of Big Flats, Chemung Co. NY and Bradford Co., PA is from the "Dutch" Drake line of Orange Co., NY. Francis Drake of Lansing, Tompkins Co., NY is the son of Francis Drake of Orange Co., NY and neither is from the Dutch Drake line! This group appears to be from the Drake line of Southhold, Suffolk Co., NY which encluded John, Richard and possible a Francis b. ca 1710. Francis Drake 1st and Francis Drake 2nd of Ovid and Dansville, and Francis P. Drake of Tompkins Co., NY appear from DNA testing to be from the same line of Drakes. Possibly from the Westchester, NY and Fairfield, CT line of Drakes who descend from Samuel Drake and Ann Barlow. Lots of these Drake lived in Cayuga Co., NY. Also in the area was a Francis Drake of New Jersey and his sons Thomas and Henry. This group ended up in the Bethany, NY area and in far western Pennsylvania. This Francis died in 1828 leaving a young daughter, possibly from a second marriage. We also have Francis Drake who married Demmis Kelsey of Berkshire, MA who ended up in Eagle, Wyoming Co., NY. His children ended up in Erie Co., PA. Another Francis Drake who lived in Orange Co. NY married Hannah DeKay. This Drake group has not positively been identified through DNA. They may be related to the Dutch Drakes but are off a few numbers on a couple markers. This group moved to Michigan where Francis died. We also have Francis Drake of CT who lived in Cicero, Onandago Co., NY. This Drake group was from the Connecticut Drake line and is a son of John Easton Drake. In Saratoga Co., NY we have Francis Drake, son of Dr. Col. Samuel Drake. This Francis was a lawyer and died in 1814. And last, Francis B. Drake of MA who moved from western New York to Ohio and then on into Iowa and Illinois. Most, if not all of these Francis Drakes were born before 1803. The majority being born 1750-1780. Probably more than you wanted to know about Francis Drake in New York! Susan
Hello, Just read your reply. Would you have any info on the Kelsey family? My Wm. Willis Pearce had nine children between 1793 and 1815. His wife was Mary Shepard. His wife in 1818 was named Mary. However, there is a gap in the children between 1810 and 1815, when the last child, Eli Kelsey Pearce was born. I have found reference to an Eli Kelsey online but could not learn anything about him. Kelseys lived near Wm. Willis Pearce when he lived in Benton, NY. I have wondered if W. W. had a second wife named Mary who was a Kelsey. In info would be appreciated. Hello, I have just joined this list. I am stuck at my 3g-grandfather, William Willis Pearce, Sr. (b. NJ ca. 1764-5-66 or maybe earlier) and his brother, Jonathan (b. ca. 1762). They resided along the Orange Co., line and on Mount Pochuck, Wantage/Vernon Twp., Sussex Co., NJ at least in the 1780s and left about 1802 for the Finger Lakes. Their neighbor on Mount Pochuck was James Jacobus. Some Jacobusses went to Lake Seneca, and some to Lake Keuka. I believe the Pearces were also neighbors with Deckers and Shepards. The Jonathan Paers of Minisink, married to Blandina Terwilliger, may be the Jonathan Pearce who died at the Battle of Minisink, 1779, along with two Shepard males and others. He may also be the father of these two brothers. Don't know. This couple baptised a Sarah at about that time, witnessed by a John Wallis (Willis? Wallace?) and Gertje Van Inegen (sp?) at the Machemeck church, that being Port Jervis. My Jacobus-Pearce gg-grandmother reportedly had ties to Port Jervis as well, probably through the Decker family, but mainly the Jacobusses are found in Bergen Co., NJ. I believe that this father of the two brothers may have been married to a female "Willis" as that name picks up with Wm. Willis and repeats for genearations, and is used in his brother Jonathan's line as well. In the Willis family, many descendants were named the two names together, "William Willis," regardless of whether they were a Willis son, or son of a Willis female. I believe there is an Ellis connection further back. If not English, or Dutch, they may have been Welsh, given the Welsh names in the line. The names William and Jonathan repeat, as does Ellis. On the famale side, Wm. Willis Pearce named his two daughters Clarinda and Elizabeth. His brother, Jonathan, had a daughter, Sarah (John) Willett. There is probably a mother's or grandmother's name in their somewhere, as they were pretty faithful in how they named sons. I have found a list of Paerses married between 16_- and 1800 in NY but I do not know how they link with Jonathan Paers, who may or may not be the father of Willis and Jonathan Pearce mentioned above. I was told their father was a William Ellis, or Ellis Pearce, but that might just as well have been a Jonathan Ellis Pearce rather than Wm. Ellis Pearce. I do not know of other children of Jonathan and Blandina. I would appreciate any information anyone might come across or have. I need the date and place of death and place of burial for Sophia Penney COX, wife of Martin B. COX. They were in Middletown NY in the 1880 census. Sophia was the mother of Martin's 4 children, one of which became Mayor of Middletown in the 19 teens. Sophia was the daughter of Jesse C. and Elizabeth PENNEY of Mount Hope, Orange Co., NY. I would appreciate any help that might be given me. An obituary of Sophia Cox would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.
