All, I have just been made aware by a thoughtfull member of this list (thanks Marilyn) that NY held a number of State Census over the years. I understand one of these State Census was held in 1925 maybe even 1935. Can anyone tell me if these are available either on or off line and how does one go about searching them? I would probably be looking at either the Highland Falls, Orange Co area or Marlborough City, Ulster Co area. As an afterthought, how does one go looking for Divorce Records in NY State. Are they held at County level or State level? Regards from over the Pond. Mike Greatorex Harrogate, England. They are usually available in the county for which they were taken, either in archives or with the local Historical or Genealogical Society. I believe they are all on microfilm in Salt Lake City Mike Greatorex <[email protected]> wrote: All, I have just been made aware by a thoughtfull member of this list (thanks Marilyn) that NY held a number of State Census over the years. Family History Centers can order the microfilm for the census. They were taken in 1790, 1825, 1835, 1845, 1855, 1865, 1875, 1892, 1905. 1915 and 1925. Lois in Auburn, CA, USA
Hello Mike, I don't have any information on your family names but I do have an idea for you. There are NY state census' for some of the "half-decades" so, if you haven't already done so, looking at the one for 1925 may help. I realize you are "across the pond" but perhaps someone here on this side can help you. If no one else volunteers to look at the 1925 state census, I will do so, but it won't be immediately. I'm not sure where there a copies of that census -- other than in Albany. John Greatorex was from Highland Falls. The newspaper obituary I have on John says he was survived by a wife and 2 children. No gender or names mentioned. He did have a boy called Carl who died in 1918 and he is buried in Marlborough City. Have seen his grave marker. Anyway in May of 1919 I have her marrying a William Joseph Lewis (born 25 Sept 1886), he was a soldier at West Point MA. Nothing in the 1920 US census BUT in the 1930 Census I have her in Highland Falls with Clarence Lewis (born Jan 1896). So thats the mystery. Also a mystery is what happened to the children, nothing mentioned in the 1930 Census at the family home. In 1942 Louella dies, I have newspaper clippings of her death and funeral which includes details of her parents (Grand and Charlotte Ann Baxter (nee Whilklow) ) No direct mention is made of any children, however, in the list of floral tributes is one "To Mom from Billie". Thats the only indication I have of any surviving children. So during your research into the Lewis line, if you come across any of the above I would be really interested. Hi. I am trying to locate a marriage between Thomas Oldring and Helen Murphy. Thomas, I think lived in New York City and Helen lived in Newburgh. This was probably be late 1930's or early 40;s Any suggestions? Leon, I saw your attached email and it quickly got my interest. I have an ancestor who married a Clarence Lewis born about Jan 1896 according to his SSDI record. As I have not sent for a copy I have no information on his parents. However he married a Louella Greatorex nee Baxter sometime in the 1920's. All this happened in and around Highland Falls, Orange Co, NY. In the 1930 US Census they were living at West Street, Highland Falls. It gets a bit more complicated than that but if we have a connection I will go into it more fully. Briefly I have a marriage document which states she married a William J Lewis in 1919 only months after the death of her first husband John Greatorex. Then I have the 1930 Census which shows her with Clarence. Do we have a connection? Mike Greatorex Harrogate, England. I believe there are several GOLDSMITH researchers on this list, as Goldsmith was an early Orange Co. family. I research John HARRIS (b. 1748- d. 8 Mar. 1825),, of Montgomery, but in seeking his birthplace an d parents I follow every lead, no matter how tenuous.( John HARRIS was a member of the Ulster militia and is buried in Goodwill Presbyterian church with wife, Abigail ?.) The Annals of Salem (Massachusetts) by Joseph B. Felt, cites in 1644, “ Thomas GOLDSMITH is to take a son of George HARRIS, about eight years old as an apprentice for 12 years, to teach him his trade, find him meate, drinke and aparill, and allow him L3 at the end of the tearme.” Joseph Harris of the same family is bound out to another person. I believe Thomas GOLDSMITH left Salem and moved to Southampton, possibly taking these young boys with him. By 1670, a George Harris is married in Southampton and in 1698, a George Harris marries Sarah in Southampton. I suspect there is a link between my John HARRIS of Montgomery and the George HARRIS family of North Sea, Long Island. Here’s the clue: In the 1880 book by James Milligan Dickson, "The Goodwill Memorial Church: First 150 years of the Goodwill Presbyterian Church, Montgomery, NY" there is a footnote: "From Southampton, too, but later in the century, came the progenitors of the HOWELL family at E. Coldenham and elsewhere throughout the county. They are descended from Edward Howell, who came to Southampton from Boston in 1640. Also the HARRIS family, descended from George Harris of 1657; the Woodruff family, descended from John WOODRUFF of 1657; the TOPPING family, descended from Thomas topping of Milford, 1639, and the GOODALE family, descended from Joseph Goodale of 1698." The HAINES family is also mentioned: "Haines, who appears in the records of Southampton in 1657. The line of descent from him to the Haines family, lately so broken in upon by death, is Benjamin--Samuel--Samuel--John S." I’m hoping a GOLDSMITH researcher may have some information on the migration of pre-Revolutionary families from Salem, MA to Southampton to Orange Co. Thanks, Elizabeth Harris Pope Portland, ME ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
It seems very fitting that just before the Memorial Day weekend I received my gg-grandfather James Lewis Civil War pension files. Prior to receiving these papers, I was told that his parents were a John Lewis and a Mary Martin (who I have found nothing on). Because James had differing years of birth in some of his pension forms, he was asked to provide proof of the year. His proof was a letter from the Orange County Recorder of Deeds that states that James Lewis had provided as proof, an 1858 American Bible Society Bible that was owned by his sister Elizabeth Secor of Cornwall, NY. (This was in 1910.) In the Bible it supposedly, has the birth dates of their parents William and Hannah Lewis and the children of William and Hannah as: Elizabeth James Mary Henry Alfred Alphius The only dates given in the letter are those that are for James 9/3/1841. (In his pension records he states that he was born in several places including Lake George, Saratoga County and a Lexom Plains. Does anyone have any additional information on this Lewis line? (Would really love to get lucky and have a Secor descendant say that they have the Bible and can provide me with a copy of the information found within. (I should note that the letter from the Recorder of Deeds does say that the information was copied from another family Bible that was accidently destroyed by fire.) Thank you, Leon Blauvelt Lockbourne, OH (formerly of Newburgh, NY)
Dear Leon, I find William and Hannah Lewis and their older children on the federal 1850 census living in dwelling #425 in Fort Anne, Washington County, New York. This is on the east side of the Hudson River across from Saratoga County. Everyone in the family was born in New York, and William is working as a laborer. Fort Anne is southeast of Lake George. William Lewis 34 Hannah 30 Betsy 12 James 9 Mary 6 Henry 2 "Betsy", James' older sister, must be the Elizabeth Lewis who married a SECOR. You might consider exploring early marriage records in Washington County, New York. I've "rescued" two old photographs which both belong to the WHITMORE Family of New York. The first is a photograph of Charles WHITMORE who lived in Coxsackie, NY. The photograph was taken at the McDonnald & Sterry Studio in Albany, NY, likely sometime in the 1880's. In addition to his name and place of residence someone has also written "killed on RR" on the back of the photograph. The second photograph is identified as Marion Francis WHITMORE. This photograph was likely taken in the early 1900's with the baby noted as 6 months old at the time the photograph was taken. The photograph was taken at the Peck Studio in Newburgh, NY. In addition to his name and age, someone has also written "For Grandma" and "wearing Papa's baby dress, W. A. WALTER" on the back of the photograph. Based on limited research I was able to locate information regarding a possible match for one of the photographs, Charles Hoyt WHITMORE b. 18 Nov 1849 at Coxsackie, NY to parents William WHITMORE and Hester Jane HOYT. I'm hoping to locate someone from this WHITMORE Family so that these wonderful old photographs can be returned to their rightful place with family. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
