    3. Anne just posted the Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness link. Excellent place to share 'your' local resources in exchange for lookups that 'you' need. For example, in the summer I volunteer to do lookups and take digital photos of tombstones in the Woods National Cemetery (Military cemetery) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Because I volunteer at RAOGK to 'do what I can' in my area, I can ask someone else on the RAOGK list to do a lookup for me in any area I need some assistance. Charging a research "fee" is not allowed on RAOGK but you can ask that your expenses be reimbursed. As examples: 1. I live in Wisconsin but I needed a record filed with the School Superintendants in South Dakota in 1915. Going to the South Dakota portion of RAOGK, I found a volunteer and now I have a copy of the report my teach-grand-father filed in South Dakota in 1915. Costs paid to the researcher were parking fees, photocopying fees and postage which is allowed per RAOGK guidelines. 2. Again, residing in Wisconsin made it very difficult to visit Memphis, Tennessee to get information on an ancestor's burial site in Tennessee. While I only had valid historical military record that my ancestor was buried in a certain cemetery (and contacting that cemetery by mail and by phone resulted in "Sorry, he's not here!") I contacted a RAOGK volunteer and now have burial information and even a photo of my ancestors tombstone! RAOGK works - but in turn you *must* volunteer to do research in your local area. I don't charge a dime for the cemetery work I do even though I travel 25 miles round trip to take photos by request. I have also transcribed mid 1800's newspapers and posted them online for others, gathered photos of historical schools in Wisconsin, etc. If anyone cares, take a look at my site. There are a couple of links I have to update, but still good stuff for Wisconsin researchers: http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~sbosmans/ Shari - who needs help finding land records in Onondago County! ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, December 19, 2003 8:24 AM Subject: Re: [NYOnonda] [OHMEIGS] Genealogical Gify to List (typo ?) > RAOGK stand for Random Acts Of Genealogical Kindness.
