1. Re: [NYOnonda] Death Index for NY
2. The New York State indexes for Births, Marriages and Deaths are on Microfiche. There is a rule (law?) that prohibits photocopying any of the Fiche. (Therefore the information is not online.) They started the index of the Births, Marriages and Deaths about 1881, however most areas didn't get compliant until closer to 1900. Marriages and Deaths have a 50 year limit, and Births a 75 year. This means that the current available indexes for Marriages and Deaths are 1881 - 1953, and for Births 1881 - 1928. Sometime in January we will have access to 1954 and 1929 respectively. The Microfiche are located at only a few areas around NY State. The New York State Archives, at the Cultural Education Center, Empire State Plaza, in Albany; The Onondaga County Public Library, 5th floor Local History Room in Syracuse; and the Rochester Public Library. Each location has their own specific rules on how to use these records. More information can be learned by going to the following website http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/genealogy/vitrec.htm Hope this helps, and check the weather forecast before you visit our fine state now that the snow has started to fly.....
