Hi, Can anyone tell me what Wittig's was, located at 1711 Grant Blvd. in Syracuse circa 1936? A relative was employed there at the age of 17; wondering what he might have been doing. Many thanks, Michelle Stone Marietta, Georgia "German Immigrant Ancestors in Syracuse & Onondaga Co., NY" http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mstone/
There was also a "Wittig's Ice Cream Parlor" on Westcott Street in the little business district between E Genesee St. & Euclid Ave. My mother used to take me there to get Pistachio Ice Cream during the very early forties of the last century. Like the rest of the Ice Cream Parlors of yesteryear it has disappeared. Your relative may have done many things - from sweeping floors to serving the ice cream 'treats' to actually making the ice cream. The only place I can get pistachio ice cream now is in my memories or freeze Jell-O Pistachio pudding and pretend it's ice cream. Nothing can really replace Wittig's. Happy New Year to all!!
