Hi listers; According to the 1918 City directory David C. Dodge lived at 1000 Cumberland, it lists his occupation as a farmer. I hope this helps. It appears that there is no longer any house at 1000 Cumberland Avenue -- and there is also no visual evidence that a house was ever located there. At the spot where 1000 Cumberland should be found if it existed, there is a small park, about a block long on each side, called Sherman Park. I saw a house with an address of 1001 Cumberland Avenue, so I know that the even-numbered houses would have been located on the side of the street that is now Sherman Park. I don't know when Sherman Park was first created, but it's certainly been there as long as I've lived in this area (i.e. since 1986 at least). There is a town-sponsored football team called the "Sherman Park Bulldogs", but from what I can tell, they play somewhere else (near Thornden Park, which is close to the SU campus). So perhaps there are two parks called Sherman Park. The one that has replaced any house formerly located at 1000 Cumberland is the Sherman Park that is bordered by Cumberland, Westmoreland, Tecumseh, and Sherman Place. I'm guessing that an article about the creation of this Sherman Park might mention the homes that were torn down in order to create it, but I have yet to find such an article. -- Mary D.
