You mentioned that with the recording of deaths at the state level, there still may not be something at the local level. Are you saying that if they did not record locally that there could still be a record at the state level? If so, how would this happen? Thanks for your help. I'm from the Midwest where the action is initiated at the local level. The Microfiche gives enough information if the person is listed to then contact the village/city or town clerk where the death occurred. This usually needs to done in writing before you can get a copy. $22 is the standard charge. There are a couple of things to be mindful of, the recording of deaths at the state level was spotty before 1900, and even though a place of death maybe given in the records the local people may still not have a copy. It takes a little leg work and some phone calls to locate these things. Hope this helps. Rick Porter Finger Lakes House Histories -- nyononda-request@rootsweb.com wrote: Today's Topics: 1. I would like to get three, but in looking for them it would cost almost $200, which I find somewhat prohibitive. (That information can be obtained for free from the NYS Dept of Health Vital Statistics fiche at the Onondaga County Public Library's Local History & Genealogy Dept.) I think its best to get one directly from Albany (NYS Health Department) because it is the exact copy of the original certificate. One from Syracuse will generally be a transcription of the information which could result in mistakes. Hope that helps Anne -----Original Message----- From: patjoe5@yahoo.com To: Syracuse <NYONONDA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wed, 1 Aug 2007 12:09 pm Subject: [NYONONDA] Death Certificates Is there a less expensive way to obtain death certificates than the site shown on line? Hello Lauren, Have you been in touch with the Western Monroe County Genealogical Society or Ken Beaman? I would like to pass along your name and information. The group has discussed the ROWE family in great detail.
