This one said... he was born in County Tyrone Ireland, and died of 'fatty degeneration of the HEART'!! Just a slight difference in the two Certificates, huh? I had a similar experience. The transcriptions from the Syracuse County Clerk's office read: GRUNN for one of my ancestors' maiden names and WATERUS for the other. "Unusual surnames," I thought to myself. "These ought to be really easy to trace." For a year I naively searched for GRUNN and WATERUS -- and came up empty. Turns out that the names were GUNN and WATERS. What a difference one extra letter can make! Diane Wilson Flynn ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

    3. Due to heresay or lack of reliable witnesses, the death record is the least reliable of all. Once you get the exact copy, the information needs to be proved. For example, I learned the hard way that a county death cert. said Catherine Flaherty was born in Ireland. When I recieved the NYS exact copy, it was Kerry with info supplied by her grand daughter's husband. Now I am wondering, could Kerry be Derry? Undertakers were notorious for getting info the easy way especially 20 years after a death cert. was the law. So if you are relying on one witness' hearing, memory and sometimes sobriety (not to mention the undertaker or coroner or physician) you may never learn the facts.
