    1. Re: [NYONONDA] George W Johnson Possible Civil War Veteran
    2. Hi Liz It would help if you gave us some additional info on George such as his DOB. What was his wife's Given Name and her Maiden Surname and Surname at the time of their Marriage. Even though his wife lived in Syracuse all her life does not mean that George did. He might of lived in the surrounding Central New York area. Also, the fact he called himself a Capt. does not mean he was a Capt. Many Veterans have been known to stretch the truth regarding their actual Rank going way back to the Rev and War of 1812. I have found a number of them calling themselves Major, Sergt and even Colonel when they were no more than a Private. Do you know if he received a Civil War Pension? or did his wife receive a Pension after his death? Have you checked the 1890 Veteran's Census (that Census still exists). Do you have an Obit from the Newspaper on his Death? Is there any existing document or proof that he served in the Civil War from a Family Bible, Biography Book on his family, Newspaper Article or other form of Family History. Was any Regt or Company marked on his tombstone? Pat R

    3. Well, I don't know if he received a pension because I can't figure out what regiment he fought with. I know he did fight in the Civil War because I have a letter from his step brother talking about George W. Johnson fighting in the Civil War. I know he was born in Constantia, NY on Aug 11, 1839 and died in Syracuse, NY on Feb 24, 1870. I have his will, a small obit that mentions nothing; a person who was doing some work for me can't find his tombstone in the Oakwood cemetery in Syracuse, NY, although I have the coordinates where it is supposed to be. Thanks for any help you may be able to give me. Liz Parmalee

    3. Liz: There are several George W Johnson's listed as serving in the Civil War on this web site: www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.cfm It's too bad that you don't know which regiment he was in. Maybe if you looked at all 14 of them, something would look familiar with one of them. Carol P.S. if you know the exact location of the grave in Oakwood, I would be happy to take a photo for you. I work at SUNY-ESF and the lawn borders on Oakwood Cemetery. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Elizabeth Parmalee" <lizparmalee@comcast.net> To: <nyononda@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 06, 2007 5:47 PM Subject: Re: [NYONONDA] George W Johnson Possible Civil War Veteran > Well, I don't know if he received a pension because I can't figure out > what > regiment he fought with. 3. Thanks, I would love you to do that. I do have it. He is in section 22, lot 169. Lot 169 has 320 square feet. His burial number is 1355. I am leaving for vacation in a couple of hours, so there is no hurry on this. I had someone look for it, but he could not find it. If you don't mind going to look also, I would be so happy. I remember someone looking for a tombstone in a small cemetery once, and this person could not find it. My husband and I went and searched for at least an hour, and then my husband found it. It was a white tombstone with writing on it that was difficult to read. It was easy to understand why someone could not find it. Thank you for your help.
