Hello! This is my first message to the Onondaga mail list. My wife's BALDWIN family arrived in America (from Germany) in the mid- to late-1840s, probably 1846. I know they eventually settled in Albany by 1870, but I found them in the 1850 and 1860 censuses of Onondaga Co., specifically in Syracuse. The parents in the family are known to be JOSEPH BALDWIN and MARY BALDWIN, according to one of the son's death certificate. However, MARY is shown without a husband in both 1850 and 1860. I don't know if Joseph died before the family came to America, died on the ship, or after they arrived (or that he was actually dead). Does anyone have information on this family, or know where I could find it? My main quest right now is to find Joseph. Any help would be very much appreciated. 1850 U.S. census of Onondaga Co. (Syracuse 2nd ward): Leonard 24 (could be 54 -- hard to read on enumeration), Mary BALDWIN 41, Joseph 17, Andrew 14, Leonard 12, unreadable 5, and Barbara 1. All except Barbara were born in Germany. The elder Leonard was probably not a son of Mary -- possibly a brother of Mary's husband Joseph. 1860 U.S. census of Onondaga Co. (Syracuse 8th ward): Leonard 22, Mary BALDWIN 50, Andrew 24, Catherine 15, Barbary 10. Joseph 28 was married to a Julia by this time and living elsewhere in Syracuse. This Joseph also named his children Andrew, Joseph, and Leonard. I don't know why son Leonard 22 was listed first. Many thanks. Carl Cason, Bothell, Washington email: ccason@compuserve.com
