In a message dated 4/26/2007 3:23:53 P.M. Pacific Standard Time, deesgenes1@yahoo.com writes: I'm transcribing some old Onondaga records and have come across a town name that is difficult to read. Is there a town in Onondaga county that is similar to "Lermet". That's what the writing looks like. Thankyou Danel My interpretation of "Lermet" is Sennet. In 19th century handwriting, the "L" and "S" were very similar. Two "Ns" side-by-side look like an "r" and an "m." [i.e., rm]. Consistent spelling and doubling of consonants were optional in the 19th century. SENNETT is a town (civil subdivision) in Cayuga County, a neighbor county bordering on Onondaga County. A reminder for those of us who live outside of NY state: The word "town" refers to a civil subdivision of a county -- a basic unit of local government in the states of New England and in the mid-Atlantic state of New York. Towns have a town clerk, a town hall, a town supervisor, etc. A small populated place within a town is a village. A really small populated place is a hamlet. The word "town" is NOT synonymous with or interchangeable with "city," "village" or "hamlet." Examples: Syracuse is a CITY in the COUNTY of Onondaga. Howlett Hill is a HAMLET in the TOWN of Onondaga, COUNTY of Onondaga. The VILLAGE of Camillus is in the TOWN of Camillus, COUNTY of Onondaga. A reminder to other Listers (and myself): Don't forget to change the SUBJECT line of your email if you hit that "Reply All" button in your email program when your message's subject deviates from the subject line to which you are replying. All postings are archived. Many years from now, a researcher may ignore your very important posting on the ANYNAME family because your subject line referred to a previous thread about the town of WHATEVER and didn't mention the ANYNAME family at all. Hope this helps. Diane Wilson Flynn ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

Thanks to all of you who sent suggestions. With Anne's help, I think we've come up with the town being Sennet. I appreciate all the responses. The website showing old towns was especially interesting. Thanks for posting that. Thank you , very much for adding that info, While helping danel I just Found all my Blanchard and Russell Connections that myself and others have been struggling with. that connect our unfamiliar Family lines. >From that web search I went here. http://www.nnygenealogy.com/index.html These lines also ended up in Onondaga, Oswego, and Oneida County Ny ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ http://community.webtv.net/cryingkate1/WatsonRoscoeFamily
That's a cool website, but keep in mind that not everything is included. I had a relative who died in "Elkhorn", NY according to his NYS Death Certificate. We believe that since he lived in "High Bridge" that "Elkhorn" was very close by. On a map, "High Bridge" is on High Bridge Road in Fayetteville, on the way to Manlius. In a small development on the other side of High Bridge Road, we find an Elkhorn Road, so it seems that he may have died there. Neither "Elkhorn" nor "High Bridge" are located on this website. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

Kerry, That won't work. Rootsweb will not allow attachments. Better would be to place on the message board, assuming it is gatewayed to the mailing list; an attachment CAN be uploaded to a message board. Alternatively, an image could be uploaded to any website to which Danel has access, and the link to the image provided in an e-mail. -- Mary On Thu, 26 Apr 2007, Kerry Patrick wrote: > Danel, > > Can you scan the town name and paste in the body of the message to send > along for us to view? Danel, Can you scan the town name and paste in the body of the message to send along for us to view? This could be Dewitt. Sometimes the "D" is not fully closed and looks like an "L". The "w" could be mistaken for an old lower case "r". And so on . . . with the rest of the name. What time period is this from? If it's before 1835, chances are it is NOT Dewitt since it seems that town was formed from Manlius in that year, which makes my reasoning a moot point. The old writing can be difficult to decipher at times. Best of Luck! Hi Diane, I'm Jackie in Jackson (MI) and we don't have access here to the above book. I would be very interested in knowing if a couple of my family names are listed. The time period would be late 1700-1840 in Onondaga Co. The names are: Bliss, John Hunt, John Bassett, Ira Bassett, Sereno Fish, Charles Fish, Joseph If you need other specific info, just let me know. Thanks.
