If so, Stony Island would be approximately 70-100 miles from Syracuse. Not exactly a day trip from Syracuse during that era, but certainly possible as an extened stay (2 4 weeks, longer?) As for peple swimming in Lake Ontario, Yes! It has many thousands of camps and other public beaches along its shores. HTH. 2. Pat, It's entirely possible that my grandmother's parents had a cottage at Stony Island. I don't think my grandmother really talked about her childhood all that much with her children - they only know little stories here and there. It seems strange to me that my mother and her siblings never really asked her about her life as a little girl, but I guess it was considered intrusive back then. (They don't even know how their parents met!) My aunt came across the photographs of my grandmother entirely by accident - no one had ever seen them before. Do people swim in Lake Ontario? My grandmother was only 11 or 12 in the photos - I can't imagine her fishing, but you never know!! Do you know how far Stony Island is from Syracuse (where my grandmother grew up). I live down south and am not familiar with place locations in New York. Thanks! Shannon ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    2. George, Pat, and Jim, Thank you for the great information and websites to check! My grandmother, Martha FARRELL, grew up in Syracuse (she was the granddaughter of Richard FARRELL, who was prominent in the salt industry there). It appears that she is wearing a bathing suit in the photos labeled "Stony Point" (boy those suits must have been uncomfortable and hot!!) I didn't realize Stony Point wasn't in Onondaga County - learn something new every day!! Thanks again for your help!! 1. Re: [NYONONDA] Fishing at Stony Island
    2. Hi Shannon My Son just came back up to Cape Vincent from Camillus and I asked him where the Boys caught all the fish last Monday on their fishing trip. They got a huge catch and he told me they caught all of them over off Stony Island. I usually don't go until later as the water is still a little rough for me. So that makes me think that perhaps your Grandmother, Grandfather or someone in your immediate family were fisherman. Fishing was even better in those days. Perhaps someone in your immediate family owned a Cottage (that is what they were called years ago) or perhaps had a Dairy farm (many in the area at that time) close to the Lake. Could have been either her maternal or paternal Grandparents were from this locality. One of the big advantages of living here in Cape Vincent is we have both Lake Ontario and the St Lawrence River for fishing. We are where the River and Lake meet. The boys were fishing down off Pt Peninsula last weekend, Pat R

    3. Hi Shannon, I assume you are talking about the Stony Island in New York located in Lake Ontario. If you go to the web address I have indicated below, you will se exactly where this island is located. I am very familiar with it since I have fished in those waters and my family has a cottage nearby on Henderson Bay. http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?searchtype=address&country=US&addtohistory=&searchtab=home&formtype=address&popflag=0&latitude=&longitude=&name=&phone=&level=&cat=&address=&city=Henderson&state=NY&zipcode=#east<http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?searchtype=address&country=US&addtohistory=&searchtab=home&formtype=address&popflag=0&latitude=&longitude=&name=&phone=&level=&cat=&address=&city=Henderson&state=NY&zipcode=#east> Hope this helps you. 2. Hi Shannon You did not give very many details as to where your Grandmother lived? or a Surname. Although not far from Onondaga County I believe that this could very well be the Stony Island that is located in the Town of Hounsfield Jefferson County New York near Point Peninsula NY (The Road leading to Pt Peninsula is midway between Chaumont and Cape Vincent off Rt 12E). This Stony Point is on Lake Ontario. The Island is known for its wildlife and migratory birds and many local people fish the shoals around it for Small Mouth Bass, Walleye, Perch and Brown Bullheads (plus other fish). It is a Nature lovers paradise and well known in the area. I hope this helps you. Pat R

    2. Jose Reyes
    3. On the 1870 Census for Syracuse, Ward 4, Dwelling No. 142, there are two families living there, one (No. 181) headed by Michael Heitz, the other (No. 182) by (Christian) Fried. Behr, who was my GGGGrandfather. I notice that Behr and Heitz were both brewers, and the disparity of assets ($20,000 real estate and $15,000 personal assets for Heitz, $300 for Behr), which leads me to suspect that Heitz was Behr's boss and landlord. I'm wondering if people have any information on Heitz and his brewery. Thanks Jose Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand And Eternity in an hour. - William Blake

    3. I am trying to take my Abbe/Abbey line back to John Abbe in the 1600s. The Colonial Dames 17th Century, a lineage society, has no problem with all of the generation links proving a father-son connection except for William Abbey being the son of William Abbey. The following has been proven about the Abbeys: William Abbey, Sr. b. 14 Apr 1758, Mansfield, Tolland, CT d. 6 Aug 1833, Hall's Corners, Onondaga Co., NY m. 5 Jun 1777, Mansfield, CT Lydia Hall b. 9 Sept 1757, Mansfield, CT d. after 1844, place unknown Children: Charlotte , m. ____ Davis Elijah (1779- bef 1851), m. Rebecca Mead The book by Abbe, Cleveland & Josephine Genung Nichols, Abbe-Abbey Geneology in Memory of John Abbey and His Descendants, has not been acceptable due to its lack of documentation. The census records before 1850 do not show the names of people in a household except for the head. The birth date of William, Jr. was calculated from South Onondaga cemetery records. I have not found a will for William, Sr. I have not found any land records that might tie the 2 Williams together. The only problem is proving that William, Jr. is the son of William Sr. Can anyone help with this. Thank you in advance. 3. Dear Mary, What I have done is to open Wordpad under Windows-Accessories and type in the article or else just print the entire page. I have not found a way yet to just print the article I want using the Ancestry.com image. If you have another program like membership in NewspaperArchive.com or Godfrey Memorial Library subscription that also offers NewspaperArchive; they open in PDF and you can highlight and save the article where you want or use the camera tool to save it as a picture.
