    1. [NYONONDA] Fishing at Stony Island
    2. Michelle, Pat, and Rick: Thank you all for the information and descriptions! Your reminiscences and walks down memory lane helped me imagine my grandmother as a young girl enjoying many of the same things you all did (and still do!) My mother said my grandmother never really talked about her childhood - not because it was bad, but because my mother and her siblings never thought to ask. I guess they felt it was too intrusive. How I wish they had though!! Thank you again for your descriptions! I would love to see Stony Island one day! Shannon ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    1. [NYONONDA] DESIMONE & FABRIZIO
    2. Hello listers: I am trying to help my cousin find any information on his DESIMONE and FABRIZIO ancestors. He is planning a trip to Italy and would love to know where his ancestors were from so he can visit those towns. He knows very little about his ancestors and I have not been able to find anything on them on rootsweb and I have not found his family on Heritagequest's censuses up to 1920. His grandfather's name was SAMUEL DESIMONE. Samuel was born in Syracuse,NY in 1903 and he also died in Syracuse in 1973. He married FELICE FABRIZIO. Felice FABRIZIO was born in Cortland NY in 1907 and died in Syracuse, NY in 1994. Samuel and Felice had one daughter, Jackie, and one son, James. James was born in 1935 in Syracuse. Searches on NYGENWEB'S Onondaga and Cortland counties websites have not turned up anything on these families either. My cousin believes his grandfather Samuel DESIMONE'S ancestors may be from Sicily and his FABRIZIO ancestors may be from Naples or Florence. I would appreciate any information that you may have on these families. Thank you in advance, Renne

    3. FYI -- The following message just came over another list that I subscribe to. Since it mentions Onondaga County specifically, I contacted the author of the message and asked her permission to forward her message here to our list; she gave me her permission. I have snipped the parts of the message that don't pertain to Onondaga County. Here's a direct link to the database: <http://www.germangenealogygroup.com/NortherNat.STM> I was going to mention another group that generally hosts the same set of databases on their site in case this one was slow, but this is one case where the other society doesn't carry the same database -- at least not yet anyway. -- Mary -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [BKLYN] Updated FREE searchable databases on German Genealogy Group website Date: Tue, 26 Jun 2007 23:12:21 -0400 From: Elizabeth Lovaglio <lizlov@optonline.net> The German Genealogy Group has added another new database and updated our yearbook database! Northern District Court of NY Naturalizations This database contains an index to the naturalization records that were issued between 1821 and 1855 by the Northern District Courts, which includes the counties of Albany, Broome, Cayuga, Chenango, Clinton, Cortland, Delaware, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Hamilton, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Montgomery, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego, Rensselaer, St. Lawrence, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Tioga, Tompkins, Warren and Washington. It contains 208 records which were filed by date and do not contain petition numbers. [snip] Go to www.GermanGenealogyGroup.com to see our church, naturalization and vital records databases. [snip]

    1. [NYONONDA] Aaron Brintnell
    2. Joye
    3. Aaron Brintnell was born in Syracuse in May of 1841 or 42. His father was Hiram Brintnell; mother's name believed to be Charlott. Aaron had 3 older brothers, John, c. 1832, Ira c. 1939 and Elihin c. 1840. Can someone with access to the NY censuses check for this family in 1840? Does a Brintnell family appear in the 1800 or 1810 NY census as Hiram was also born in NY? 1. Re: [NYONONDA] Fishing at Stony Island
    2. Hi Shannon Sorry for the delay in my reply, but I am working the "The Moving Wall" at Clayton this week and its is a "big five days". The Moving Wall is a Memorial in honor of the men and women of the armed forces of the US who served in the Vietnam War. It was brought here by the Clayton Am. Legion for the June 20-25. Clayton is just down the road (on the St Lawrence) from Cape Vincent where I live. But at the Cape we love to mention we are the only spot where we have both the St Lawrence River and Lake Ontario. The spot where the River and the Lake meet. Yes, People do "Swim" in Lake Ontario. They have been swimming here for years. I have not been in the water yet this year as usually the 4th of July is when it warms up enough for me. People have summer cottages (camps as they are called today) and summer homes (perhaps someone in your Ancestry had a summer cottage). I have a picture of my "First Dip" in Lake Ontario at Sackets Harbor New York (where we lived year round at that time) when I was 5 months old. Of course my mother was holding me and the picture is a brown colored black and white version. It was many years ago. Not all the people are Fisherman (but many are) and my brother and I had our own Fishing Poles from the time we were 4 years old or less. Fishing was a big part of our family recreation. So many learned to fish very young I am not sure where you live but mail me direct and I could mail you some scene's of the area. Pat R

    3. Hi Shannon, Sure, people swim in Lake Ontario! There is Westcott Beach State Park on the shore just south of the Sacketts Harbor area in Jefferson County. http://nysparks.state.ny.us/parks/info.asp?parkID=161 It has changed very little since I was a kid. I grew up in North Syracuse in Onondaga Co., and my family used to go there for weekend daytrips, picnics, and swimming back in the 1960s. Little did I know that in looking out into the water I was gazing toward the Galloo Islands offshore, where my great-great-grandparents lived 1869-1880. I never knew that until I started doing genealogy in the 1990s. Their story, at my website (see "Island Life"): http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mstone/lewishroberts3.htm People lived, fished, and vacationed all over the shoreline and islands of Lake Ontario. My bunch on the Big Galloo ended up in Watertown, NY (Jefferson Co.), and subsequent generations circulated between North Syracuse and the Watertown/Sackets Harbor area all the time (train travel between these places was so common back then). People in North Syracuse in earlier generations loved to go fishing all the time "up north." Many would rent "cottages" (rustic shacks) up there for their vacations, with the lucky ones wealthy enough to own their own cottages. I have old family photos over two or three generations documenting fishing/swimming trips to Sandy Pond (still a recreational area:) This website gives you a nice look at the area: http://www.sandypondresorts.com/ In the 1920s car travel became popular and my great-grandparents and their friends from the neighborhood and the Taft Grange began going to the north woods to fish and swim in car caravans of old Model As and Franklins instead of taking the trains. Hot stuff! Depending on what crowd you ran with, it seems life in Onondaga Co. certainly could include an intimate and familiar relationship with the local lake/island culture, including Lake Ontario, Oneida Lake, and all the way to the 1,000 Islands and the Adirondacks (I also have photos of g-grandparents' fishing trips to Moon Lake in St. Lawrence Co.). Of course, the nearest to Syracuse was Onondaga Lake, used for both industry (producing salt, and the home of the Solvay Process Company) and recreation (including 1900-era resorts/amusement parks like White City and Long Branch). By the 1960s that lake was so polluted nobody dared go into it anymore, but I think they have cleaned it up some since. Just some general history from a personal slant. --Michelle Foon123@aol.com wrote: > ... > > Do people swim in Lake Ontario?
