I am looking for information about the family of my great grandfather, Robert REDDEN. Robert was married to Minnie DOREMUS (my great grandmother), when she died suddenly of a heart attack in 1912. According to family legend, Robert had what they termed a nervous breakdown. At some point, he dropped his four children off at his dead wife's sisters house. He then relocated to Syracuse, and lost touch with his family. I am trying to determine when Robert actually arrived in Syracuse. I know that he remarried there in 1922, and had two more children. Over the years, I have found more information about his son, Robert, but I have had diffuiculty finding more about his daughter Ruth. Any help would be appreciated, Tom in CT This is what I know about Robert's family... ROBERT E. REDDEN was born December 07, 1873 in Newark, NJ, and died July 14, 1925 in Syracuse, NY. With your library card (Onondaga Co. Public), you can access Heritage Quest on- line from your house. If you don't already know about this, it will open up a whole world of resources for you! I've used it quite f few times in the past year when I was recovering from illness and no way could I make it downtown to do the research I wanted to do. I thought the book had an index. Jonas P(erry) ELLIS was born August 31, 1808, in Milford, Otsego Co., NY, to Christopher ELLIS and Wealthy (Perry) ELLIS. He married Huldah BOWEN on October 23, 1831 in Laurens, Otsego Co., NY. Jonas and Wealthy moved to Onondaga Co. at some time before 1840. Jonas and Huldah had two children, Harriet born April 29, 1836, and James, born July 20, 1838. James died at 16 years of age. In the 1840 Federal U.S. Census, Jonas and his family were living in Manlius. I have a paragraph from Early Settlers and Development in the Town of Manlius in which his participation in the fire company is mentioned. In 1847 Jonas Ellis owned 39 acres in Lot 9, which borders the Town of Manlius. The farm was valued at $850, and Jonas owned $200 in personal items. In the 1850 Federal U.S. Census, Jonas and his family were living in Pompey, but Jonas was not in Pompey in the 1852 Assessors Book.. I have Jonas's will. He died April 5, 1856, and was buried in the Manlius Village Cemetery. Huldah was listed in the 1880 U.S. Federal Census in the household of Henry JONES in Syracuse, NY. She died February 10, 1882, and was buried in the same cemetery as Jonas. Harriet, Jonas's and Wealthy's daughter, married Hamilton STONE. I do not have their marriage date. Hamilton was born January 15, 1830, in New York State, probably in Onondaga Co., NY. Hamilton, Harriet and their daughter, Hattie Ella, moved to Ovid, Clinton Co., MI, sometime between the 1860 and 1870 U.S. Federal Censuses. Hamilton was a carpenter and became a lumberman in Michigan. According to the Federal censuses, both of Hamilton's parents were born in New York State. I have not been able to find them. Lauren- I know it's difficult for you to get to the library, but if you don't have a card, at least go there long enough to get one. The History of Onondaga, 1878, 610 pages, is one of many Onondaga references available through Heritage Quest. Although this is a subscription service, MANY libraries allow a passthrough sign-on when you log on to your local library. Just go to Search Books/Places and enter Onondaga. I have three different libraries that I can use. I can use the Columbus, OH library or the Westerville library just because I have library cards. I also have access through the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center in Fremont, where there is a membership cost. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rick Bova" <bova-genealogy@cox.net> To: <nyononda@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 26, 2007 9:43 PM Subject: Re: [NYONONDA] Where to obtain Manlius NY March 1826 marriage info? > You can buy an original for about $200 in a rare book store or rare book > web site. Ya know the names I wrote abt are only a sampling of my family who were in Manlius during the stated time frame. The info you wrote is grt - potentially. I have a copy of a Diary written before and including 1824. But I can not figure out the religious denomination. Almost every daily notation makes reference to the days religious activity or sentiment. I am frustrated not being able to get a sense of the church or denomination or esp. the location (except poss Britton's Settlement). She (Emilie Rowe) continually mentions that they are leaving for' and or where they are going for the days religious activities... She also says her father Asa Rowe started the group (an hoped he wouldn't be forgotten). I will gladly share the diary with anyone who would like to try to determine the religious affiliation and hopefully its location. The diary is loaded with names but most are abbreviated... After all she was writing for her own edification not mine! Thanks for the help - keep it coming pls... Just had another thought. You might want to get in touch with whoever the current town historian is for Manlius, It used to be Barbara Rivette, but you should be able to Google it. They might have some ideas or know of some unpublished original records. PERSI also indexes "Tree Talks" the journal of the Central New York Genealogical Society. See my most recent Blog about CNYGS & Tree Talks by going to my website unyg.com and clicking on UNYG Blog.
