Hello, I'm new to this list and was wondering if there are any marriage records for Syracuse, Onondaga County, NY for the years between 1846-1849? I'm seeking a record of marriage between a Michael Rice & Margaret Byrne, both came from Ireland in 1846. They are listed in the 1850 Syracuse census. Thank You for your time Patricia
I am searching for information about my gr-gr-gr-grandmother and her descendents\ The 1880 Federal Census lists Mary Woodlock, MotherL, 70, b. Hi, List! Has anyone heard from Liz Parmalee lately? I sent her an e mail regarding her ancestor, Charles Johnson, in Oakwood Cemetery and haven't heard back from her. Just on vacation, I hope! Carol Bain
You mentioned that with the recording of deaths at the state level, there still may not be something at the local level. Are you saying that if they did not record locally that there could still be a record at the state level? If so, how would this happen? Thanks for your help. I'm from the Midwest where the action is initiated at the local level. The Microfiche gives enough information if the person is listed to then contact the village/city or town clerk where the death occurred. This usually needs to done in writing before you can get a copy. $22 is the standard charge. There are a couple of things to be mindful of, the recording of deaths at the state level was spotty before 1900, and even though a place of death maybe given in the records the local people may still not have a copy. It takes a little leg work and some phone calls to locate these things. Hope this helps. Rick Porter Finger Lakes House Histories -- nyononda-request@rootsweb.com wrote: Today's Topics: 1. I do not see a connection with my Galloway;s but you never know. They were not the documented line that immigrated to NY from Scotland. This line immigrated to NJ and from there to Madison Co> Onondaga Co and some sons to Cattaragus, etc. I have only a mention in census and a bio of one grandson that they came from NJ. Early into Madison co., about 1802 (Jacob, Thomas and a Burnett) then into SE Onondaga Co. in the Fabius Pompey area. Sharon
For those who do not have access to ancestry.com: it is also available under HeritageQuest.com which is available to most of us with our public library card. I know that I have access with both my San Antonio, TX card and the one to Onondaga County Public Library in Syracuse, NY. You just go to the library web site and choose online data bases. After you click on Heritage Quest it will ask for the your name and the bar code number on the back of your card. Choose book search and then put the name in the box for place. This web site also gives you access to all federal census reports and much more. Call your local library for instructions if this does not work for you. Sharon, There is a family tale that the Galloway's owned land in NY state at one time, I have only been able to trace back to Everitt Galloway. He was thought to have been born in VA and married Mary Isaacs in 1791 in Woodford County KY . One of his sons later moved to Floyd County IN. and his children ended up in IA, MO, OR, and WA. I have lots of information on them. All, Here's the directions I use on Ancestry ... 1) Goto "Search Family & Local History Records" http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/familylocalhistories/default.aspx?rt= 33 2) Click the link under Volume Titles for "O" http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/familylocalhistories/default.aspx?rt= 33&sourceLink=,o&firstTitle=0 3) Click the link under Volume Titles for "On" http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/familylocalhistories/default.aspx?rt= 33&sourceLink=,o,on&firstTitle=0 4) Click the link under Volume Titles for "Ono" http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/familylocalhistories/default.aspx?rt= 33&sourceLink=,o,on,ono&firstTitle=0 5) 4th entry in the list. I have Ancestry's "Annual World Deluxe Membership", can access everything, and pay $299/year. Worth every penny to me. That's the only genealogy subscription I've ever found useful. I'll be subscribing to Legacy.com ($19.99/year) soon for Obits not available on Ancestry. With your library card (Onondaga Co. Public), you can access Heritage Quest on- line from your house. If you don't already know about this, it will open up a whole world of resources for you! I've used it quite f few times in the past year when I was recovering from illness and no way could I make it downtown to do the research I wanted to do. "sev Congregational, Presbyterian nd Baptist Societies were organized n th twn o Manlius during 1789 to 1803." Christ Church (Episcopalian) was orgnaized in 1804 and the building was erected in 1813. I thought the book had an index. Jonas P(erry) ELLIS was born August 31, 1808, in Milford, Otsego Co., NY, to Christopher ELLIS and Wealthy (Perry) ELLIS. He married Huldah BOWEN on October 23, 1831 in Laurens, Otsego Co., NY. Jonas and Wealthy moved to Onondaga Co. at some time before 1840. Jonas and Huldah had two children, Harriet born April 29, 1836, and James, born July 20, 1838. James died at 16 years of age. In the 1840 Federal U.S. Census, Jonas and his family were living in Manlius. I have a paragraph from Early Settlers and Development in the Town of Manlius in which his participation in the fire company is mentioned. In 1847 Jonas Ellis owned 39 acres in Lot 9, which borders the Town of Manlius. The farm was valued at $850, and Jonas owned $200 in personal items. In the 1850 Federal U.S. Census, Jonas and his family were living in Pompey, but Jonas was not in Pompey in the 1852 Assessors Book.. I have Jonas's will. He died April 5, 1856, and was buried in the Manlius Village Cemetery. Huldah was listed in the 1880 U.S. Federal Census in the household of Henry JONES in Syracuse, NY. She died February 10, 1882, and was buried in the same cemetery as Jonas. Harriet, Jonas's and Wealthy's daughter, married Hamilton STONE. I do not have their marriage date. Hamilton was born January 15, 1830, in New York State, probably in Onondaga Co., NY. Hamilton, Harriet and their daughter, Hattie Ella, moved to Ovid, Clinton Co., MI, sometime between the 1860 and 1870 U.S. Federal Censuses. Hamilton was a carpenter and became a lumberman in Michigan. According to the Federal censuses, both of Hamilton's parents were born in New York State. I have not been able to find them. Ya know the names I wrote abt are only a sampling of my family who were in Manlius during the stated time frame. The info you wrote is grt - potentially. I have a copy of a Diary written before and including 1824. But I can not figure out the religious denomination. Almost every daily notation makes reference to the days religious activity or sentiment. I am frustrated not being able to get a sense of the church or denomination or esp. the location (except poss Britton's Settlement). She (Emilie Rowe) continually mentions that they are leaving for' and or where they are going for the days religious activities... She also says her father Asa Rowe started the group (an hoped he wouldn't be forgotten). I will gladly share the diary with anyone who would like to try to determine the religious affiliation and hopefully its location. The diary is loaded with names but most are abbreviated... After all she was writing for her own edification not mine! Thanks for the help - keep it coming pls... Hope the following from the book "The History of Onondaga County" written in 1878 will help you track down any church records that might be available. "sev Congregational, Presbyterian nd Baptist Societies were organized n th twn o Manlius during 1789 to 1803." Christ Church (Episcopalian) was orgnaized in 1804 and the building was erected in 1813. Trinity Presbyterian Church of Manlius was formed in 1815 and the building was erected in 1819. First Methodist Episcopal Church of Manilus was built in 1822. Baptist Churches were among the earliest in the town of Manlius, but no edifice was erected in the village till 1828. In 1813 an organization was formed under the name of the "Pompey and Manlius Baptist Church" Those were in the village of Manilus. There were also churches in the village of Fayettevile , Kirkville and the Eagle Village that are in the Town of Manilus, though these seem to have been later. I did not see any references to the surnames of Rowe and Stillwell. Nina, I followed Dick's instructions and found the book. The key is to type "Onondaga History" (without the quotes) in the keyword box.
