Before 1906 the only naturalization information one will find will be the new citizen's names and his / her two character witnesses, and date of naturalization. The 1900 through 1930 censuses usually record the year of immigration and one records the year of naturalization. dick ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
Most local history and genealogy material are on the 7th floor. The archives are on the 11th floor. Census data, city directories, old phone books are on the 7th floor. The library has a wide collection of old newspapers on microfilm. The list of the newspapers can be found here http://srv36.nysed.gov/nysnp/. They are great for looking up obituaries. Publications from the various counties can be found on the shelves. Indices to births, deaths and marriages, civil and revolutionary war documents are on the 11th floor. Some naturalizations can be found here, but most will be at the individual county. ----- Original Message ----- From: ABryant999@aol.com To: nyononda@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, September 14, 2007 2:58 PM Subject: [NYONONDA] Albany research Hi All, In a few weeks I am hoping to be in Albany for a day of research, and want to make the best use of my time. Hi, listees, My 4x greatgrandparents, John and Betsey Barse, lived in the Town of Manlius in the 1820s. I am looking for the maiden name of the wife of my 4x greatgrandfather John Barse (b. Feb 1793, bpt. Johannes Bersch in Stone Arabia, Montgomery Co.). She went by the name of BETSEY BARSE and was supposedly born in Vermont. >From her death date, 20 Apr 1861, at 73 yrs and 15 days, I calculate her birth date to be 5 Apr 1788. She died in Olean, Cattaraugus County. They would have married some time before April 1814. I received some deeds today from the Onondaga County Clerk's Office that I hoped would contain Betsey's maiden name, but sadly, no. John and Betsey Barse owned a part of lot 45, out of the original town parcel, in 1827. Does anyone have information? Cheers, Allrelated -- "As is the generation of leaves, so is that of humanity. The wind scatters the leaves on the ground, but the live timber burgeons with leaves again in the season of spring returning. So one generation of men will grow while another dies." Iliad, VI.146-150, trans. Lattimore. So, tell me again, why the heck am I raking up all these leaves?

Lauren- It certainly is a definite possibility but in my research of my husband's family I haven't come across it yet. I have John and Johanna/Jane McCarthy and their 2 children-Winifred and Patrick- emigrating from Cork to Oak St. in Syracuse in 1866. I just got them back to Dunmanway, East Carbery in Co. Cork. If I find any McCartys I'll let you know. Sharon The Naturalization Records would be in Onondaga County for 1861. In the 1900 Census it states he has been here for 31 years and came in 1869 and NA. Onondaga County Clerk has Land &Court Records from 1784 and is located at 401 Montgomery St., Syracuse, NY 13202; Phone: (315) 435-2227, Fax: (315) 435-3455 . The county clerk is the keeper of most civil and criminal trial court records for Supreme Court and County Court, naturalizations, marriages (1908–35), censuses (Some county clerks' offices hold duplicate copies of some of the State censuses taken periodically between 1825 and 1925 and copies of the federal census), as well as deeds and mortgages. You should really need a Date close to the Date before ordering a copy of the Naturalization Records. You can go to your local LDS Family History Center and they can order the following Microfilms and you can view them on their Viewer. I would suggest the Declaration of Intent first and then the Naturalization Records. You would want both as there would be different material on both. Hi Mary, Yes, in the 1920 census it does have a date but it's hard to read , it looks like either 1875 or could be 1895 so......................I would think it would be 1895.............................. Sharon, If you have him in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census records, then you should be able to see if he was ever naturalized, as there is a column for that information in those census records. It should tell you both if and when he was naturalized. -- Mary On Sun, 9 Sep 2007, Sharon Frank wrote: > > Hi Pat, > John Gregg was born Dec 8, 1840 in Scotland, came in 1869 with wife Jane and > 2 daughters, Agnes & Jane...................I have them in > 1880- Manlius > 1900- DeWitt > 1910 & 1920 DeWitt > > I did see a biography for him on line :-) > Thanks so much! > Sharon

What a generous offer!! And such great timing!! I recently decided to research my mother's maternal line and posted my interests re Woodlock on the Onondaga mailing list. In the Lot 1 listing at St. Mary's Cemetery, I found the following names: Alice Brock 1876-1934 Mary A. Godkin, d. 5/1/1940 mother James P. Godkin, d. 4/17/1946, son Catherine Woodlock Hammond, 1879-1950 Woodlock, Thomas E. 1871-1942 The three women and Thomas Woodlock are siblings of my gr-grandmother, Mary Woodlock, b. ENG 1863, d. Syracuse ca. 1884. I haven't been able to locate her gravesite or her date of death but am delighted to have found those of her sisters, brother and nephew. Perhaps the above are buried together in a Woodlock plot. Surprised that the women are not buried with their husbands as was the custom in those days. I know why Thomas Woodlock is not buried with his wife. Sad story. Syracuse Post Standard November 17, 1910 BRIDE OF FEW WEEKS IS CLAIMED BY DEATH Daughter of Late Chester C. Clapper Expires at Her Home Mrs. Hyla Mary Clapper Woodlock, wife of Thomas Woodlock and a bride of only a few weeks, died at 9:30 last evening at their home. No. 206 Apple Street. She was a daughter of Mrs. Mary A. Clapper of No. 327 Apple Street and her father was the late Chester C. Clapper, a captain in the Syracuse Fire Department whose death occurred July 6, 1909 at the age of 46 years. He was in charge of the Fire Department Veterinary Hospital and the School of Instruction for the Life Saving Corps. Mrs. Woodlock was 26 years old. Her husband is a son of Daniel Woodlock of No. 206 Apple Street. Arrangements have not been made for the funeral. SurnameGivenSectionLotYearBurial NumberBirthPlaceDeathInterment WOODLOCKHYLA M3156191014266 I have Thomas Woodlock's obit. Apparently, he never remarried. I found her burial site at the Oakwood/Morningside site maintained by Mr. Norton. Thanks so much for your offer to take pictures--it is very much appreciated, as it your previous help in other matters. You are a great asset to the Onondaga list.
