Read a 1931 newspaper account of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR,) marking the graves of 595 Revolutionary War Soldiers that were buried in Onondaga County. The soldiers names and burial locations are listed within. Go to www.unyg.com, click on the "UNYG Blog" at the top of the page to read this story. Hi I have used this Archives frequently over the years (including these microfilms). They have a wonderful collection of microfilms, books, rare books and family history. It certainly would be a disaster if any of their valuable resources were damaged. Pat R

I am trying to find the name of the wife of John J. WALTERS. They were married 1 January 1897, Town of Onondaga (NYSVR Fiche nr. 209-M, record # 0054). They had a son, Allen T. WALTERS, born 10 August 1898, Town of Onondaga (NYSVFR Fiche nr. 233-B, record nr. 31874). I checked the death records for 1898,1899, 1900, but the indices were of such poor quality that they were useless. Allen T. WALTERS was living with his paternal grandparents in 1900 in Town of DeWitt. He ended up in the Onondaga County Orphan Asylum (newsarticle). dick **************************************Check out AOL's list of 2007's hottest products. Hello - I think I may have found a new ancestor, Peter Ford b. ca 1820 wife Nancy b. ca 1818 children Mary, Sarah, Katie and Frank. This from the 1870 census for Syracuse. They were living right next to my great grandfather James Burns and his wife Margaret whom we know to be a Ford and their family John, Mary and James. Anyone else researching this family? Thanks Jim Avery ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
I believe it was actually called the "Anti-Sour Puss Club" that was headed by Nick Peters. A search of the Syracuse newspapers brings up many articles in the late 1940s and thru the 1950s. It seemed to be a recreational group that also spent much time fund raising for local causes. In 1943 there was an article that ran in the paper about the club, at that time they were raising money to buy an ambulance for the Syracuse area. A google search using the term "sour puss club" came up with this link. It is for the Onondaga Historical Association and talks about 1 of there collections which includes a picture of the Anti Sour Puss Club. Looking at their subject finding aid that describes their vertical file collection in their Research Center, draw 1 has files on associations of which the Anti-Sourpuss Club is one. http://www.cnyhistory.org/SampleGenealogy.html A google search using the term "sourpuss club" came up with the following page which list an obit that mentions the person belonged to the club. http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ny/onondaga/obits/tps/2004/sep/tps18sep2004.txt Rick Bova D Thomas wrote: > While looking at some news clippings from an out of the area newspaper, > I found this, and wondered if anyone had any insight on this particular "club"" Just curious. > > Dianne > > "While living in Syracuse he (Mr. Long) was a member of the well known Sour Puss club, a fun organization composed of outstanding business and > professional men, which was headed by Nick Peters, Syracuse clothing store operator and manufacturer of men's garments. Due to heresay or lack of reliable witnesses, the death record is the least reliable of all. Once you get the exact copy, the information needs to be proved. For example, I learned the hard way that a county death cert. said Catherine Flaherty was born in Ireland. When I recieved the NYS exact copy, it was Kerry with info supplied by her grand daughter's husband. Now I am wondering, could Kerry be Derry? Undertakers were notorious for getting info the easy way especially 20 years after a death cert. was the law. So if you are relying on one witness' hearing, memory and sometimes sobriety (not to mention the undertaker or coroner or physician) you may never learn the facts.
