Seeking Christopher B. Grover and Charles B. Grover, presumably two brothers, who married Celina or Salina Drake and Betsey Drake, respectively, who are presumably two sisters. Death record of daughter and one Illinois census record suggests they were all born or hailed from Syracuse, New York. Were in Kane County (Batavia) Illinois by middle 1850's where they married. Any information is appreciated and will share. Sincerely, Robert Campbell of Long Beach, California, great-great-grandson of either Christopher and Celina Drake Grover of Syracuse or of Charles B. and Betsey Drake Grover of Syracuse. Hi...this is my first posting to the list...so I hope I am doing this ok. I am looking for an obituary/death information on a John Doughtery..I am trying to double check to make sure this family is indeed my great great great grandfather (John age 68) and great great grandfather (William age 12). Page 86, 4th Ward of Syracuse, 1860 Census, household number 707. There is a William Dougherty who is 12 years old. Other members of the family include, John Dougherty age 68, a laborer born in Ireland, Margaret, age 48, born in Ireland, John, age 16, who was an apprentice Cigar Maker, Daniel, age 14, in school, and James, age 9. All the children listed were born in NY. Other residents of the household are a Mary Comstock, age 29, and an Albert Comstock, age 5. Mary lists her occupation as washing. They are listed as one household in the Census. Actually any tidbit about ANY oif these folks would be appreciated. Any suggested books that might have a tidbit would be appreciated. IF I am correct, and this is my is the correct family, William later served in the Kansas State Militia, then, moved back to NY to Utica with a shole of children. But he left behind in Kansas a 19 year old girl...my great grandmother. Barbara in Fairbanks, alaska mlm@mosquitonet.com

Another clipped article of unknown origin in my scrapbook. Obit: Mrs Margaret FLANAGAN On Thursday, September 29th, 1927 , at her home at Osisco, occurred the death of Mrs Margaret FLANAGAN, at the age of 97 years. Notwithstanding her advanced years, she had retained all her faculties unimpaired until a short time before her death and often expressed her great satisfaction that fate made it possible for her to be tenderly cared for during her declining years and last illness by her son and daughter, Mr and Mrs Thomas Flanagan. Her passing marked the sunset of a long and useful life well spent in the performance of her home and Christian duties and the final summons found her well fortified by a life of Christian preparedness. Being always fond of young people and interested in their pleasures and problems, she had long been familiarly known as "Grandma FLANAGAN." Born in County Tiperary, Ireland, she came to America at the age of eighteen years and soon became imbued with an abiding love for the land of her adoption. She is survived by one son, Thomas FLANAGAN of Otisco, (New York) seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Interment was at St Patrick's Cemetery, Otisco, NY.
From the local Tully, NY newspaper. Date unknown: Obituary Thursday, Jan 15, 1931 at her home in Otisco occurred the death of Mrs Josie LONG FLANAGAN, aged 42 years. Mrs FLANAGAN was born in Otisco and had resided the most of her life in the towns of Tully and Otisco where by her kindly ways she had endeared herself to a host of friends. She is survived by her husband, Edward FLANAGAN, four daughters; Helen Margaret, Mary Alice, Lucy Agnes, and Dorothy Louise. Two sons, Harold and Hollis; her father, John LONG of Tully; four sisters: Mrs Jay MURPHY, Otisco; Mrs Carl SMITH of Syracuse and Frances and Louise LONG of Tully, Dr William LONG of Baldwinsville, James and Lester of Cortland. Funeral services were held at St. Patrick's Church, Otisco, Monday morning Jan 19 where a Solemn High Mass of Requiem was offered by her cousin, Rev Paul LONG of Utica assisted by the Pastor Rev Luke V. GALLAGHER of Tully and the Rev Father COVENY of Homer. Interment was in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Otisco. To the Memory of Josie LONG FLANAGAN In behalf of her family and friends In His great wisdom, from this life God chose to call a loving wife; A daughter ever dutiful and fair; A mother who gave great love and care; A sister whose kind and tender ways Brought sunshine in the bygone days, Thy memory long in hearts will dwell Of those who knew and loved thee well. 'Tis only human that we should grieve But if Christ's teachings we believe We feel that on the eternal shore We shall meet with thee in joy once more. --John L. Crotty (brother-in-law to Edward Flanagan)
Newspaper article from my scrapbook: M. Agnes MERRIMAN (FLANAGAN), 101 taught in one-room schools: by Anne Roth Staff Writer She was the daughter of a farmer and the wife of a farmer. In her early years, she taught in one-room schools. M. Agnes MERRIMAN - who grew up without running water and automobiles -- died Thursday at her home on Kamm Road, Marietta, just a mile from where she was born. She was 101 years old. Mrs MERRIMAN was the daughter of Thomas and Ellen (KINNEY) FLANAGAN. She was the first baby baptized at St Patrick's Church in Otisco, was married there in 1915 and at the time of her death the oldest parishioner. After attending a one-room school in Otisco, Mrs MERRIMAN traveled by horse and buggy or, during winter, by sleigh to attend Onondaga Valley Academy. She boarded with a family during the week, returning home each weekend. After her high school graduation, she remained at the academy to attend Training Class, a teacher preparation course. She then taught in one-room schools in Marble District and State Road (now route 20) near Marcellus and Joshua near Otisco. "Sometimes she taught eight grades in the one-room school, depending on the ages of the children that year," her daughter, Arlene SWETE, said today. "There could be as many as a dozen or 14 student." After her marriage, she became a full-time homemaker. Life was busy on the 100-acre dairy and crop farm. There were eggs to gather, animals to feed, clothes to wash, children to raise and a large house to maintain. Mrs MERRIMAN had extensive vegetable and flower gardens and grew many fruits: apples, cherries, prunes, plums and berries. She canned pork, beef, vegetables, and fruit. Her husband smoked ham in the smokehouse. "We lived off the farm growing up, " her daughter said. From her kitchen, off of which is a side porch with a hand pump still in operation, came the aroma of cooking. "She was a great cook. Her specialty was buttersotch pie. I don't think anyone ever equaled that." SWETE said. "She made some preserves that were unusual, too, and her baked beans were delicious." Mrs MERRIMAN never learned to drive a car. "She was the old school," her daughter said. "She was a quiet woman, kind and firm in raising the children. We didn't get out of order a whole lot. She was very comforting. It was always a pleasure to visit my parets home. I always felt better afterword." On July 2, 1989, 80 family members gathered in Marcellus Park for a picnic in honor of her 100th birthday. They came from California, Montana, North Carolina, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New York City, and Washington D.C. Mrs. MERRIMAN was an active member of the Altar and Rosary Society at St Patrick's. Every Thanksgiving Eve the church has a dinner dance. "She worked on that as long as she was able," her daughter said. She was also a member of the Town of Otisco Senior Citizens. Surviving are two daughters, Alene SWETE of Onandaga Hill and Lucy SWANSON of Forest Hills; three sons, Paul F. of Alexandria Bay, Gerald W. of Otisco and Vicent E. of Skaneateles; two sisters, Anna CROTTY of Syracuse and Mildred FLANAGAN of Skaneateles; 22 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 10:45 a.m. Monday at Ryan Funeral Home, Marcellus, and 11:30 a.m. in St Patrick's Church, the Rev Vincent Kilpatrick officiating. Burial will be in St Patrick's Cemetery, Otisco. Sorry I don't have the newspaper or date.

Would like any information on the William MALCOLM, appearing on the 1840 NYS Census in Salina, Onondaga County, and also in the Syracuse City Directories during the latter half of the 1800's. He is said to have built the MALCOLM Block in downtown Syracuse. Is this the William MALCOLM who died 22 Jun 1903? He had a son, William MALCOLM, Jr., appearing in the city directories from 1867 thru 1880. The addressgiven for both is 101 James Street. Although I have a lot of information on the family of Stephen Van Rensselaer MALCOLM in Syracuse I don't have a link to this William MALCOLM -- is there one? Dorothy Cate Frisbie Escondido, CA
