I was wondering if someone could help with information on my g-g-g- grandmother Mary Miller . In the !860 census she is listed as living in Brewerton, 35 yrs. old with 3 children & no husband . Her children were , Abraham b.1841 , Mary b. 1844 , & John b. 1848 . She was born in Canada ( 1825 ? ) . Her oldest child Abraham was born in N.Y. So between 1825 & 1841 Mary came to this country . But being some what new at this , I'm not sure where I would look to find out when she came here & where in Canada she came from . Also who her husband was . Any help would be welcomed . Happy Holidays to all , Ed
I am searching for information re: JARED WHITE b. 1821 married CATHERINE VANDENBERG. Their son GILBERT WHEELER WHITE (my great grandfather) was born July 14, 1848 in Skaneateles. Gilbert also had a brother FRANCIS WHITE. In researching my WHITES have found a JARED WHITE b.1777 who is the son of the Rev. War Vet. HENRY WHITE who was born in Cortland Cty and married to JULIANA MOOR. I feel that they are relative, but need to fill in the gaps between the JAREDS. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and Merry Christmas. Susie from Colville, WA
Hi Russell Dear, The First Ward Methodist Church merged with Gethsemane United Methodist Church back in about the early 1970's as I recall (not sure of exact year). Gethsemane's address is 1700 Butternut St. Syracuse, NY 13208 Tel: 315-479-7971. If they don't have the records you're looking for, I suggest you try the North Central New York Methodist Conference at 8422 N. Main St., Cicero, NY 13039. Tel: 315-699-8715. I don't know if either of these places have email addresses or websites but you could search for them, I suppose. I believe the building on Bear Street is still standing. You've already had a response about the cemetary. This was a cemetary at the time of my youth on the northside and later converted to a park. Records may be at the Onondaga Historical Association, 311 Montgomery St. Syracuse, NY 13202 Tel: 315-429-1864, or at the Onondaga County Public Library, 447 S. Salina St. Syracuse, NY 13202 Tel: 315-435-1900. I was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church (1601 Park St. a few blocks away) at the time of the merger. Some of the folks from First Ward Methodist joined our church at the time of the merger. We also had a merged youth group and usually worshiped together a few times a year. Good luck and best wishes for a joyous holiday season. Roger S. Reid ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Roger S. Trying to find more information or family members to Edwin NEGUS born November 8, 1807 in Syracuse, New York. Married Hannah EFFINGHAM (EVERINGHAM???) @ 1840 in Syracuse, New York. She was born on June 17, 1811 in Syracuse, New York. Thanks. Doug Negus negus@nwidt.com
This information comes from the 1855 New York Statu census for Onondaga County and may help give a snapshot of life at that time. The county had 60 stone dwellings; 762 brick; 13,175 frame; 498 log. There were 6,336 farms. In addition, Onondaga County had: one bakery; 53 blacksmiths; 53 boot/shoemakers; 5 breweries; 9 brick makers; 15 cabinet makers; 12 carpenters; 45 coach/wagon makers; 38 coopers; 36 gristmills; 26 harness and saddle makers; 4 hat/cap makers; 9 machine shops and 2 marble cutters. Population of the county in 1845 was 70,175 and 85,890 in 1855, according to the same census data. There is additional information on farm produce countywide if anyone is interested. I'm trying to find the name of my grandmother. My mother was born in Onondaga Co. on 17 Nov 1940. My mothers birth name is Patricia Ann Smith. My mothers father is Harold Smith. Do not know anything about her mother except that her family moved shortly after birth of my mom. My mom was raised by her father mother, Mae Smith in Syracuse, NY and surrounding area. Thanks, Amy Masseth, massetha@emerado.means.net
This is for Russell Dear and Dorothy Cate Frisbie, I'm not really sure about the church (Syracuse First Ward M.E. Church) but as far as First Ward Cemetary is concerned, its still exists on Bear St., LeMoyne Ave, Grant Blvd., and I believe 2nd North Street. The only problem is that it is being used as a park now. There is only marker left in the cemetary and nobody around here realizes that it was once a cemetary. I know because I live only a few blocks from there. Also, the cemetary (park) is filled with tall oak trees and its gorgeous in the summer. Hope I helped. WKICKER@aol.com
I would like to correspond with anyone who is researching the above family. My ancestors are Joseph and Lucy (Stoddard?) Westgate and Joseph (Jr) and Rebecca Fairbanks Westgate who resided in the village of Liverpool. I believe that Joseph and Lucy were born in NH and VT. He died in Hannibal, Oswego Co. on Sept. 18, 1867. She died in Liverpool at a later date. Joseph Jr. may have been born in Ohio (census records) and Rebecca was born in Herman, St. Lawrence Co. He died May 29, 1881 and she died Aug. 21, 1890. Jeanette M. Denson
I found in my great grandmother's obituary (Alma Orphelia Quackenbush Daniels Haner) that she was descended from a John Peters who was one of the three commissioners to build the first corduroy road in Syracuse. Can anyone tell me where to find info on this road? And/or John Peters? Bev Crim
