    3. Kay, I'm so glad you found an ancestor via the new service. I was certain somebody would. Once you have registered and received your username and password, you can then actually pull up a digital copy of the document itself and print it off if you wish. I found that this only works using Internet Explorer however. If you use the slightly different URL they gave you in your registration message, login using the username and password that you chose (don't worry about it being all uppercase on their system), then choose between the HTML or ActiveX versions (ActiveX works a bit better, but you must first allow Internet Explorer to install two downloads -- just use HTML if you don't want to do that). Then repeat your search, and when the name information comes up, click on the name, and you should get a digital copy of the document opening up in another window. If you choose HTML, then the digital copy will open up in a different frame of the same page you are seeing. If you choose ActiveX, then the digital copy will open up in a new page. In order to see the digital copy, you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your system; you can download that for free from <http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html>. Since I use Netscape almost exclusively myself, it took me a while to figure out that you have to use Internet Explorer in order for this site to work properly. It may be the case that an older version of Internet Explorer won't work either, and that you need the most recent version of Internet Explorer, but I can't say that for certain. Now if only I had ancestors who lived here...... -- Mary Taffet Syracuse, NY [email protected] [email protected] wrote: > > Thanks so much to the listers who posted the information re the online > Surrogate Court Records site. 1. [NYOnonda] New website/database from Onondaga County Surrogate Court
    2. Mary D. Taffet
    3. Hello all, I am a brand new subscriber to this list. I have no relatives who ever lived in Onondaga County that I know of, but I myself have lived here (in Syracuse) since 1985. I wanted to post the URL for a new resource for Onondaga County that has just become available, then I'll sit quietly in the background unless/until I happen to have some information that will answer somebody's question. The resource made available just recently comes from the Onondaga County Surrogate Court. The address is: http://surrogate5th.courts.state.ny.us/public/ It currently includes documents from 1992 forward, and from 1928 to 1938, with plans to add more over time. Right now I know you can do a name search, and supposedly you can get access to the digital images of the documents themselves, but I have as of yet not seen a way to do that. Apparently you have to have your own username and password to see the images. But for now, the only username and password you can get to is a generic one for "PUBLIC" that allows a limited number of connections at once. As for the types of documents that are contained here -- the article in the Post Standard indicates probated wills, battles over contested wills, and granting of administration on an estate. The recent news article discussing this website/database is currently available at the following link: <http://www.syracuse.com/news/poststandard/index.ssf?/base/news-12/1066638953205323.xml> -- Mary Taffet Syracuse, NY [email protected]

    3. Renne, This is from the archives for this list. I'd like to claim that I was smart enough to look there first but such is not the case. I did a Google search and that led me to the archives. Best Regards, Mike McGraw Austin, TX ------------------------------- From: jayne donnelly <[email protected]> Subject: PEAKE's lost locations Date: Fri, 25 Aug 2000 23:59:55 -0500 Hello: Thank you to all the kind souls who answered. It does appear, indeed, that George R. Peake is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Syracuse, NY. For the information of any who might use this information, Ann Ruggeri supplied the following information: "A.C. Schumacher, funeral directors eventually merged with Whelan Brothers and were located on Onondaga St. for a long time. Whelan Brothers Funeral Home is currently located at 3700 West Genesee St, Syracuse, NY 13219." Again, thank you all for your help. Michael E. Schumacher Funeral Home Please?! Hello there listers, On my great grandfather's obituary of April 1930 it says that A.C. Schumacher Funeral Home would hold his funeral. I have been trying to find out more info on my gr grandfather and thought that if I called the funeral home they might have names of his relatives, survivors etc. on file as his obit was very brief and just said he died on April 3, 1930 and that that particular funeral home would have his funeral. Of course there is no Schumacher's Funeral Home in this area anymore. Does anyone on the list remember that particular funeral home from days gone by?Where was it located and is it possible it is still in operation under another name if it changed ownership? My great grandfather was Horace G. Lathrop and he is buried in Onondaga Valley Cemetery so I am thinking it may be his funeral was held at a location maybe on W. Seneca Turnpike, Valley Dr., S. Salina St., or Lafayette. Is there perhaps a Funeral Directors Association or something similar in this county that I could call to ask where the records of A.C. Schumacher's Funeral Home would be? Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. 2. Karen - Charles and Lucy GOODMAN were b. in Somerset, England, he in 1785 and she in 1793. Their son, Francis C., was also b. there, in 1830. Unfortunately I do not have a parish for them. They moved to Onondaga, Onondaga, NY sometime before 1844, when their daughter, Elizabeth, married Alson FIELD in Onondaga. I do not have a positive connection for Elizabeth and Charles, but I have lots of circumstantial evidence.

    3. Hi Lister I am doing family research into the family of Malcolm Montgomery and Anna Rosina Fleuti. Malcolm died in the Syracruse County in 1856 leaving his wife with four young children. I would like to btain a copy of his death certificate and to find out where his family went. Malcolm was originally from Brentford England and his wife was from Switzerland. I know his two sons were living in Guernsey at the 1871 census. According to his will he named his brother-in-law William Kelly as an executor. I cannot find any trace of them in the 1881 census in England. I also have a record of a Francis Ronalds who came to New York but I have not been able to find any trace. If anyone could assist me it would be appreciated. Regards Carolyn Chalmers Australia

    3. Hello Karen My OLIVER, CLEMENTS, and GREGORY families also immigrated from Somerset County, England to Skaneateles. The Gregory's and Oliver's came to grow teasel for the woolen mills in Onondaga Co. I don't have as much information concerning the Clements family. We visited the Oliver farm at Marcellus a few years ago, and found teasel still growing wild along the tree row. The woolen mills used the burrs on the seed pods to lift the nap of the wool. John OLIVER came from Winscombe, Somerset. His first marriage was to the widow Mary GREGORY MARSHALL, daughter of Joshua and Phebe PAUL GREGORY. Ephraim and Mary COOMBS CLEMENTS were married in 1808 in Burnham Parish in Somerset, and several of their children immigrated to Onondaga County during the 1840's. Ephraim was a resident of Blagdosh parish at the time of the marriage. Their son George moved to Draycott before coming to the US. Many of the above are buried at Lakeview Cem in Skaneateles. John Oliver's tombstone states that he was born in Winscombe. I would like to hear from more Somerset area descendants as well! Gayle in Kansas [email protected]

    1. [NYOnonda] "born in England" - but where?
    2. If you are researching families in mid-1830's - 1850, where some members are "born in England", I suggest you consider the county of Somerset. Within the last several months, I have made some tentative connections for HORLE, CLATWORTHY, SHALLISH, DOVE specifically to Banwell, Somerset,England. One of the leads is an emigration document from the parish of Banwell, which indicates Dove, Shallish, and Horle families left in 1837 for Quebec. It was less costly to leave to Canada than US, apparently. They sailed from Bristol, England, which is much closer geographically than London or Liverpool. By 1840, they are in Onondaga Co, mostly Skaneateles area, but some have moved to Owasco in Cayuga Co. I am waiting for naturalization documents from Auburn to see if the documents for Samuel Horle, specifically, cite his place of origin as England, or Canada. DOn't overlook the immigration into New York State from Canada, even in those early days. Good luck. I'd love to hear from anyone else who finds ancestors from parishes in Somerset, England. 1. Re: [NYOnonda] Declaration for Naturalization: Film List
    2. I have compiled a list of microfilms for New York, Onondaga - Naturalization and citizenship. As you can see, there are several places to look for your ancestor who MIGHT have made his declaration of intention and/or sworn allegiance and gained U.S. citizenship in Onondaga County. I also have used a 2-volume unpublished typescript which is in the Onondaga County Public Libary: Immigration and Naturalization Records, Onondaga County, New York: 1802 - 1859, abstracted by Mrs. Jean D. Worden, 1978. This handy reference provides the Name, Date of Declaration of Intention, Date of Sworn Allegiance to U.S., County from which owes Allegiance and Character Witnesses.
