If the census reads that the person is a native of Ireland and had been a resident for 8 years and it was the 1850 census she would put the date of 1842. Unfortunately she made absolutely no reference to the source, so it is impossible to tell if it is from the 1850, 1855, or 1860 census, from family records, immigration books, etc. For the Rolf surname she has only: Rolfe, David - Sullivan, 1854, England, Farmer. Hi, friends, If the NY State marriage records index is in fact available on microfiche at the Onondaga Public Library now, would someone please look up the following for me next time they visit the library? Marriage between KREISCHER, ALFRED (groom) and unknown named bride anywhere in New York state in 1911. He sent a postcard to his sister-in-law in Buffalo, NY postmarked 20 September 1911 saying only "I am married now Nellie, I suppose Otto told you." A Michigan State search just turned up no marriage record in years 1910-1912. These Kreischer boys grew up in Syracuse and worked for the railroads, so the wedding could've taken place anywhere along the route between Syracuse, Buffalo, Detroit or Windsor, Canada. When he died in 1929 his marital status on his Detroit death certificate was marked "Single" above a crossed-out, blotted-over "Married" and something else ("Separated? Divorced? Widowed?). I would love to find out the bride's name and crack this mystery. New York State indexes for vital records are not on line. The Department of Health policy is that the indexes themselves are not to be in the public domain, as are the vital records within certain time limitations. The vital records reporting system begins in 1881. Births are listed in the indexes up to 75 years ago; marriages and deaths up to 50 years ago. Anyone may read the indexes and anyone may order any of those vital records in the indexes, with certain provisos. Here's the way it works: you go to one of four places (the NYS Archives Reading Room in Albany is the one I use) and read the indexes on microfiche. After transcribing the likely listings with their all-important state numbers, you may order at the archives, after completing the required form and enclosing a check for $22 each. You'll probably receive the vital records in two weeks or so. What you'll get is a photocopy of the original record. If you order by mail, even when you know the state's number, the wait is six months or more, I understand. In New York State vital records events are recorded in the municipality -- village, town or city -- in which they occurred. In some cases you will get great cooperation from the municipality clerk. In other cases, you will receive a form with information typed on a modern form, which doesn't have enough spaces for the information that's on the original. It's a good idea to telephone the clerk first and see what kind of form they are currently using. My preference is the photocopy of the original form. The New York State indexes for Births, Marriages and Deaths are on Microfiche. There is a rule (law?) that prohibits photocopying any of the Fiche. (Therefore the information is not online.) They started the index of the Births, Marriages and Deaths about 1881, however most areas didn't get compliant until closer to 1900. Marriages and Deaths have a 50 year limit, and Births a 75 year. This means that the current available indexes for Marriages and Deaths are 1881 - 1953, and for Births 1881 - 1928. Sometime in January we will have access to 1954 and 1929 respectively. The Microfiche are located at only a few areas around NY State. The New York State Archives, at the Cultural Education Center, Empire State Plaza, in Albany; The Onondaga County Public Library, 5th floor Local History Room in Syracuse; and the Rochester Public Library. Each location has their own specific rules on how to use these records. A number of areas I have researched have indexes for all deaths in the state published or on line. Ohio for instance has all deaths from 1912-1937 on-line at the Ohio Historical Center, and 1950-1995+ on Ancestry.com. Some counties have published books for 1867-1908. Illinois has an on-line index for 1916-1950, and Cook County has microfilm for 1871-1916. I have not found any NY indexes on-line. Are there any? If not, are there book or microfilm listings available somewhere should I visit your fair state?

Can anyone tell me about a George and David Rolfe who came in around 1850-1854? I find them in the 1860 census showing there were from England.
