Lauren, Even though a person may be disabled, there are still things to share with others as you have said. I normally work during the day, so I can't get to court houses, and my work day sometimes lasts late into the evening hours. That's why I chose cemetery photos: cemeteries don't close. <smile!> By the way, another good place for beginners to start is by using the USGenWeb/Rootsweb lists. You can start here and navigate to any state and just about any county and find information: http://www.usgenweb.com/ (That's how I found another of my ancestors buried in Wellington, Sumner Co., Kansas.) Sheri, I was searching for the burial location of a collateral ancestor who died in the Civil War. Previously, I had found mention in the Regimental Records of the 28th WI Inf. of his burial in the "Mississippi River National Cemetery" (which, by using http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnis_web_query_form) I had found out is now called Memphis National Cemetery. I had sent the cemetery a letter, to which they replied "He's not here. But we do have 8,000 Unknown Civil War burials...). Basing my knowledge on the Regimental records, I persisted, to which they again said "He's not here." At this point I went to RAOGK (http://www.raogk.org/) and located a volunteer in Memphis, outlined my problem to them saying that all I had was a 'number' from the Regimental Records. (I had no idea what this 'number' meant and the cemetery said that was an old numbering system and it had no meaning to them.) Well, to make the story short, the RAOGK volunteer found my ancestors tombstone (marked "Unknown") at the Memphis National Cemetery and the stone carried the 'number' I had found in the Regimental Records. I am in process of attempting to get a new head stone bearing my ancestors name. Now that RAOGK volunteer certainly took that extra step and found the information for me! That's what genealogy should be all about - each of us helping out others. It is amazing what can be accomplished by doing this! Please consider volunteering at the RAOGK web site. Remember the saying "What goes around comes around." We can all benefit in our own research by volunteering to help others! Anne just posted the Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness link. Excellent place to share 'your' local resources in exchange for lookups that 'you' need. For example, in the summer I volunteer to do lookups and take digital photos of tombstones in the Woods National Cemetery (Military cemetery) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Because I volunteer at RAOGK to 'do what I can' in my area, I can ask someone else on the RAOGK list to do a lookup for me in any area I need some assistance. Charging a research "fee" is not allowed on RAOGK but you can ask that your expenses be reimbursed. As examples: 1. I live in Wisconsin but I needed a record filed with the School Superintendants in South Dakota in 1915. Going to the South Dakota portion of RAOGK, I found a volunteer and now I have a copy of the report my teach-grand-father filed in South Dakota in 1915. Costs paid to the researcher were parking fees, photocopying fees and postage which is allowed per RAOGK guidelines. 2. Again, residing in Wisconsin made it very difficult to visit Memphis, Tennessee to get information on an ancestor's burial site in Tennessee. While I only had valid historical military record that my ancestor was buried in a certain cemetery (and contacting that cemetery by mail and by phone resulted in "Sorry, he's not here!") I contacted a RAOGK volunteer and now have burial information and even a photo of my ancestors tombstone! RAOGK works - but in turn you *must* volunteer to do research in your local area. I don't charge a dime for the cemetery work I do even though I travel 25 miles round trip to take photos by request. I have also transcribed mid 1800's newspapers and posted them online for others, gathered photos of historical schools in Wisconsin, etc. If anyone cares, take a look at my site. There are a couple of links I have to update, but still good stuff for Wisconsin researchers: http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~sbosmans/ Shari - who needs help finding land records in Onondago County! ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, December 19, 2003 8:24 AM Subject: Re: [NYOnonda] [OHMEIGS] Genealogical Gify to List (typo ?) > RAOGK stand for Random Acts Of Genealogical Kindness. I am hoping to go to Onondaga County right after Christmas -- assuming weather, etc., cooperate. I will be driving across country. I would greatly appreciate any help that can be provided about where to go to find possible records. In particular, my ancestor, Philo Goodrich was born in 1812 -- I believe his father was Giles Goodrich Jr., and I have his mother's name only as Modena? I know that Giles lived in Manlius and have found a reference to his selling land there in 1810, in an internet history of Manlius. He married for what must have been a second time in 1814 in Orange County -- but none of the records there mention Philo. Giles Goodrich (probably Sr.) is shown in Cicero in the 1810 and I believe 1820 census. I cannot find a record for the death of Giles Goodrich Sr. or his wife, Hannah, in that area -- but thought perhaps he raised Philo. Can someone help me determine where to go to look for birth/baptism records for 1812 in Onondaga County? I believe they might have been Methodists, or possibly Presbyterian. Philo married and is buried in Genesee County (Elba), but I have not found an obituary or other records at this point. I hope to go there as well. I suppose I should go there first? I am tracking this from "both ends" of the line in hopes of making the connection our family records indicate exists -- but I can find no proof. Ensign Samuel Dodge is listed #69 in the Military Tract on the Onondaga Co NY Web Page. He drew his lot in the Lysander Military Tract. Does anyone know if he is connected to the following family? Joseph D DODGE married in Lysander, Onondaga Co to Anne DEPUY in 1828, daughter of Benjamin DEPUY. Joseph had a brother John F DODGE that married Zelia GRENELL, daug of John & Lucinda RUDD GRENELL ON 13 March 1831 probably in Onondaga Co. If there is no connection to Samuel DODGE, can anyone lead me to the parents of Joseph & John? Where I might find their marriages. I found John & Zelia's marriage in a family bible. Ardith
Kay, I suggest that the Onondaga County, New York USGenWeb Site would be the perfect place for the Church records. Go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyononda/INDEX.HTM It you go to the bottom of the first page, you will see that Pamela & Jay Priest are the Administrators of the Site. I am sure that they would welcome the records. In fact, some records of the The First Presbyterian Church are already there. Shari, I don't know about Marcellus, but the Syracuse area really got dumped on yesterday. There had been 15 inches for December as of late Friday, and by this morning there had been 31.7 inches for December -- all of the 16+ inches of additional snow fell on Sunday. Marcellus is west and south of Syracuse, so it might not have gotten as much snow -- but I doubt there are any visible tombstones right now. -- Mary Taffet wis1848 wrote: > > Is anyone able to get photos for me of tombstones in the Marcellus cemetery > (or are you folks all snowed in already)? > > Shari
