    3. There was also a "Wittig's Ice Cream Parlor" on Westcott Street in the little business district between E Genesee St. & Euclid Ave. My mother used to take me there to get Pistachio Ice Cream during the very early forties of the last century. Like the rest of the Ice Cream Parlors of yesteryear it has disappeared. Your relative may have done many things - from sweeping floors to serving the ice cream 'treats' to actually making the ice cream. The only place I can get pistachio ice cream now is in my memories or freeze Jell-O Pistachio pudding and pretend it's ice cream. Nothing can really replace Wittig's. Happy New Year to all!! 2. Wittig's was an Ice Cream Parlor in the 50's located at James & Midler(where the Steak & Sundae is today). Not sure of location in 1936 era. Not sure how long it was in business at that location. The Poorhouse Bar, had different locations... Poorhouse West was in Western Lights, Onondaga Blvd. Poorhouse North was in Liverpool, possibly Old Liverpool Road. Not sure if there was any more... I was too young. :-))

    3. It was an ice cream parlour. There were several around the Syracuse area up though the 60s and 70s. There was another one on Erie Blvd & Walnut Ave that became the original "Poor House" in the latter half of the 60s. This was a bar down the hill from Syracuse University. For years you could still see the old rusting Whittigs sign covered with weeds leaning against the sign post in the corner of the parking lot. Even that is all gone now. It was turned into a park of some kind if I remember correctly. Here is the situation. My gg-mother Hannah Benedict 1809-1896, married George Virgil 3/15/1829. They had ad least 1 child, Sarah B. 1834 and perhaps another born in 1840. The on line cemetery records show nothing for George Virgil. Some researchers believe he lived well past 1850. Aug 22, 1846 Hannah married Sidney Ellis and they had 4 children from 1847 to 1852. All of the events except the birth of the last 3 Ellis children are believed to have occurred in the Pompey/Fabious area. I would like to determine how and when the marriage of Hannah and George Virgil was terminated. All help appreciated. 1. [NYOnonda] Re: Syracuse Obits online for 6 months vs Newsbank's Syr. obits since 1986
    2. Yes, The Syracuse Obits are online for only a period of 6 months, and a 15 year archive that one must pay to get the article in full. Another option is to ask someone near Syracuse to locate the obit in at the library person in Syracuse and email or snail mail it to you. However, the Newsbank American Obituaries and Death Notices have the Syracuse Newspapers online since 1986, full obituaries once you do a search. Plus the Obituaries and Death notices have access to over 250 newspapers around the United States. Here's a link for the description. http://www.newsbank.com/public/obit.html Contact your local library for them to subscribe to Newsbank's American Obituaries and Death Notices. You'll be glad you did, and since it will be (hopefully) through your local library, just use your Library card to access it for free. Ask your Library to get this resources and include it in the Remote Access Databases that is currently available. Then you can research your Obits at home, 24 hours a day. In a previous email to the Onondaga County Rootsweb list I asked people to send a letter in support of the Onondaga County Public Library to add the Newsbank's American Obituaries and Death Notices resource, as well as obtaining Heritage Quest Online to compliment the Ancestry.com that they got about a year ago or so. Please write a letter to: Ms. Mary Fran Floreck Executive Director of the Onondaga County Public Library 447 So. Salina Street Syracuse, NY 13202. Thanks Anne Ruggeri Brewerton, NY

    1. [NYOnonda] Let's ask the OCPL to add these resources
    2. Hi everyone, It was brought to my attention recently, that we (the ones who use the services of the Onondaga County Public Library - OCPL), need to make it known that we would like them to add additional resources. Here are my two suggestions, for right now..... #1 Heritage Quest Online (They have numerous Census that are indexed that Ancestry.com does not yet have indexed, and they have a number of different books that can be searched from all over the world. Some libraries allow patrons to access this at home.) #2 Newsbank Obituaries and Death Notices (You can search and locate Obits & Death notices for all over the United States. The dates vary for each of the newspapers in their collection, but its still a great reference tool. I have found numerous obits from all over when I had access to it. Again, some libraries allow for the Remote Access too.) Here's what you can do to help. Write a personal letter, I was told a petition wouldn't be very effective. It might help to mention how helpful the 5th Floor Local History Room employees and collection have helped you in your Genealogy pursuits, and how you anticipate they can be of greater help if the OCPL will consider adding new resources. Please write a letter to: Ms. Mary Fran Floreck Executive Director of the Onondaga County Public Library 447 So. Salina Street Syracuse, NY 13202. Thanks everyone & good luck with your Genealogy in 2004. Anne Ruggeri Brewerton, NY

    3. Hello, Lauren: "Our" Rowe from that area is Ransom Rowe. His son is Ransom Rowe II, and his wife is Alzina Bailey, daugher of John Bailey. Ransom Rowe II was born March 30, 1818 and died June 17, 1856. Their son, Ransom (Willis) Rowe III was born November 29, 1842 and died in action in Civil WarJuly 22, 1864 . He was married September 10, 1863 to Sarah Jane. Their are other Rowes in this line. Can you give more details about your Rowe/Roe families? Let's hope we can make a connection somewhere along the way. Thanks, and happy hunting in 2004. Lois

    3. Having ancestors and cousins from the Pompey Tully area I sure do wish you had listed the family surnames.... we might link... I noticed that Camillus was once considered DeWitt. Then I wonder was DeWitt once considered 'in' as in 'a part' of Pompey? I wonder about other significant boundary changes especially those relative to Jordan Pompey Tully Fabius Manlius...etc... does anyone know if there exists someplace esp. on the web, a list of the dates the boundaries changed? A few of my surnames in 'this area' are: Rowe Roe Kendall VanDuson Hine1834 Marcellus 1800 Stillwell Manlius 1827 Mary Rowe Manlius Dan Rowe1813Manlius Lucian Elihu Rowe b 4/2/1031 Pompey Everson Pompey(poss) 1839 Ellen Carolyn Rowe Eagle Village 1800 Callender Manlius Lucian Hine Rowe 1863 Jordan 1811 Aurelia Rowe>Camillus dau of Daniel think Dan Rowe moved here circa 1810 aka David Roe? 1830Jordan VanValkenburgh 1886and1885 Jordan> Carrington nd Sperry I wonder why my family surname Rowe or Roe is not found in historic reports like the one mentioned by Diane Wilson Flynn. It hurts to be left out. It's kind of like writing my family 'out' of local history. I wonder what criteria was used. Are their any cousins out there? 1. Re: [NYOnonda] Holzmann Surname: Pompey Hill Cemetery Syracuse
    2. In a message dated 1/3/2004 7:28:18 PM Pacific Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Does anyone know if the burial records for Pompey Hill Cemetery are on line. I am looking for members of the Holsmann /Holzmann etc. families who may be buried there. Go to Google.com and type: "Pompey Hill Cemetery" in the search box, including the quotations marks. Although I found no one of the Holzmann/Holtzmann, etc. surname appearing in the online cemetery listing, there is some excellent advice in the paragraph at the beginning of the Pompey Hill Cemetery listing. Kathy Crowell cites a book that contains much more Pompey cemetery information, as well as the name and address of the town historian. It is my understanding that the Rev. Wm. Martin Beauchamp, from whose notes the Pompey Hill Cemetery listing was compiled, was often selective. [In other words, he did not always list ALL of a cemetery's burials in his notes.] On several occasions I have compared separate unpublished readings of a cemetery's headstones and have been amazed at how much they differ -- with each other, and with my own reading of the same stones. In one case, the true year of death on a monument, 1849, was readable only in my photographs. By my on-site reading of the monument, and in two DAR listings, the year of death was 1819. [Other records establish 1849 as the correct year of death]. To add to the confusion, a Civil War marker [1861-1865] was placed at the grave! Although I don't recall you mentioning the time period in which your HOLZMANNs might be found in Onondaga County, their given names or why you think that they might have been been buried at Pompey Hill, a search on the Onondaga County USGenWeb site shows these promising names appearing on 1874 maps: Holtzman, G., lot 93 Holzman, G., Danforth & Brighton map The Onondaga Co. USGenWeb site has two search engines. One of them found Holtzman and Holzman. The other search engine found neither surname. Go figure. The HOLZMANN surname is one where SOUNDEX searching capabilities on a website can overcome many variations in spelling. Ancestry.com has SOUNDEX searching. Rootsweb.com, a free website, has SOUNDEX and metaphone searching. Hope this helps someone in their online searching. Diane Wilson Flynn
