I've gotten several comments on the two postings that I've made on Onondaga Valley Academy. I didn't know much about it except that my father had gone there. My mother found the items recently, my father was somewhat of a packrat and didn't throw much away. I have one more article about OVA, from the Syracuse Herald-American in 1965, that I won't transcribe for copyright reasons. In that year OVA closed as a high school and the building became an elementary school. One interesting item is that E. Stewart Powelsland, who was mentioned in both of my earlier postings, became OVA principal in 1925 and was still principal there when it closed in 1965. I wondered about the name of the OVA student newspaper, "The Shew-Box", until I noticed that one of the teachers was "Miss Shew". I assume that she was the paper's advisor. The printing quality is rather surprising for a high school newspaper, especially for 1938. There are a dozen photographs. It is Vol. I No. 28 so it must have been the first year that it was published. I wasn't aware of my father, Francis (Frank) Welch, being involved with his high school newspaper but I wasn't surprised. He was later editor-in-chief of the Niagara University student newspaper. He worked part time as a reporter for most of his adult life, 17 years as the Brockport correspondent for the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle and later for several small Brockport-area newspapers at different times.
The following is from "The Shew-Box" of Onondaga Valley Academy Syracuse dated May 23, 1938. The 4-page paper was touted as the "Only High School Weekly Printed In Central New York". The first article, on the front page, was written by my father, Francis WELCH, who graduated from OVA the following month. I don't have any further information on anyone else listed. None of the other articles is attributed. The paper also has numerous photos credited to the Post-Standard and the Syracuse Herald. School Reopens on Changed Schedule After Fire Ruins Portion of Building ---------------- Junior High Students Put on Half Time Due to Destruction of Class Rooms ---------------- "Martial Law" Goes Into Effect ---------------- by Francis WELCH Over 800 students of this school are returning to-day to classes in a fire-gutted school building after an unexpected two-day vacation due to the burning of the Academy last Wednesday afternoon. Many Valley students who had left the school three hours earlier as well as alumni, friends and strangers were on hand late Wednesday to see the structure go up in flames which completely ruined rooms 37 and 38 and the auditorium and gymnasium. Many other rooms were damaged by water. Cause of the fire is believed to be the ignition of straw insulation on the north side between the school and the new addition by a blow torch being used by men at work on the new wing. Principal E. Stewart POWLESLAND, who was out-of-town at the time of the blaze, announced Friday that a new schedule would be in effect today, the seventh and eighth grades going on half time while all other schedules will also be altered. The complete schedule appears on page four. Vice-Principal Charles V. HARTSON, assisted by several Valley residents, saved office records and other valuable documents from the fire. The history of the school dates back to 1812 when the first edifice was built on Academy Green. This structure added to until it burned to the ground in April 1919. Tre [sic] present building was opened in January, 1922. Mr. PARKS, the present custodian, was employed in the old school as were five of the present teachers, Miss LANGHAM, Miss FISHER, Miss SHEW, Mrs. DAILEY, and Miss MOSHER. Mr. POWLESLAND has announced that a strict system of guarding will be in effect until the end of the term for the protection of students. Miss LANGHAM, whose home room suffered the greatest damage, lost the manuscript of a book she had just written. Several library and text books were lost in her room and Miss ANDREWS'. [Page two] UNDYING EMBERS By An Observer It was very easy to identify a senior last Wednesday when dear O.V.A. almost 'went with the fire' because they looked so pathetic. "Ace" PERRY and "Gumpy" CLARK, who, with the rest of the baseball team were in the shower rooms at the time of the blaze, helped the firemen with the extinguishers and assisted Mr. HARTSON, Mr. SOUTHWORTH, Mr. Reuben JEFFERY, Sr., Mr. Alex BROWN, Mr. NEWTON, and "Dewey" Van Gorden in saving the records and other valuable objects. One of the first things to be saved was the picture of the Old Academy, next were the student records and the trophies saved by Mr. SOUTHWORTH. On returning home from Cornell and learning of the fire "Bud" DICKINSON exclaimed "Gee. Am I glad I had my lucky hat with me". He was referring to his white hat which he so frequently wears. "Franny" RETZBACK has an exclusive, that he'll be very glad to tell you about. How about it, Fran? An army of workmen descended on the school at 5:00 o'clock Friday morning. School, insurance, and construction "big shots" were everywhere in evidence. Reconstruction was progressing fast enough by ten to reassure us of school to-day. The water cascade down the front steps would have made a beautiful picture, but no one was in front of the school to get that unusual picture. [Page four] NEWS BRIEFS Among the valuable objects saved from the fire was an antique vase belonging to Miss HORLE which Mr. HARTSON brought out of her room. Miss CLARK lost over $200 worth of physical education books. Due to the fire, the Student Council election has been postponed until next week. Candidates for president are Harold SMITH and Warren MCKIBBEN. Lyman DICKINSON and Nancy KETCHAM were elected King and Queen of the Senior Class at the Junior-Senior Dance Friday night. The baseball team will play North at Meachem Field this afternoon. The lacrosse team beat the Cornell Frosh, 17-5, last Wednesday. Mr. POWLESLAND -- "It burned at the best possible place, although not at the best possible time. The burned section would have been torn out this summer anyway."

Hello, I’m trying to locate information on my 3rd. great grandparents. I suspect they may have been a Joseph Clark and Hannah Hardyear. They moved to Onondaga in the late 1700’s early 1800’s and died there. Hanna, after 1818 and Joseph, abt. 1803. They were born in Bethany Conn. I have a known 2nd Great Grandfather Henry C. Clark born 1800, which it says in his cemetery records that he was born in Owendaga County, New York. His first wife was a Lucretia or Malissia Franklin. Henry moved to Ashtabula County, Jefferson Ohio where he died on February 13, 1889. The information I have on the Joseph Clark came from a book (Family Record of Aaron Clark) they were from the Milford area of Conn. And several from that line also settled in Ashtabula County. What I would hope to find is any information linking Henry to Joseph & Hannah and possible information on a Franklin family from that area. Thanks for any help and if you need information from Summit county Ohio I would be glad to help. Rick in Copley Oh.
Seeking information on Michael CHRISTIAN, a Revolutionary War soldier b.about 1752, place unknown, d. 1807 or before. He enlisted in the Continental Army from NJ, and was awarded Tully 18, Onondaga County, as bounty land for his service. His wife may have been named Elizabeth Miller. He had three children, John, Jacob and Elizabeth, and may have had a brother named Valentine. Elizabeth married Phineas HENDERSON of Tully. Would be happy to exchange information.
Hello, My name is Sandra Kakures and I am looking for the parents of my gg grandmother. Her name was EMELINE P. RUDD. I have listed all the information I have below. If anyone knows any little bit of information or where I can search further please let me know. I would appreciate it very much. Thank you. Emeline P. Rudd (Emily) born December 29, 1833 in Onondaga, New York (per her obit) The family left New York in 1838 and went to Illinois. Father- born vermont mother-born New York (maiden name may be Preston- per Emily's death certificate) She married a George Friend in Ilinois in 1848. She died in Yakima WA, Feb. 9, 1912. I have researched everything online including a Rudd mailing list. The Rudd mailing list does show the only Rudd's in Onondaga at that time were several brothers living in Lysander per the 1830 census. They were all born in Vermont also. We believe that maybe she is VINCENT RUDD'S daughter. All of the brothers have their children's names listed and Emily's is not there. She still may be one of the brothers child but she just wasn't listed. I don't know if her family belonged to any church. Does anyone know what churches were there at the time and if so, where would all the records be? Thank you for any help you can give. Sandra Kakures

Hi Pam I answered your first request on March 23rd. That is only 1 week ago. I have found that I have waited to receive a reply from a Library or Archive far longer than 1 week. Many Libraries and Archives are operating with the help of PT volunteers and on low budgets. It also takes time to do the research and also these archives and Libraries receive many requests from other researches and try to do them in the order received. . Even if you go to a Library in person, you must pay for copies. Many times we do not find everything we want in one source, so we go on and seek another source for the information. It sometimes can take several years to uncover one piece of information. You mention you do not need the Death Certificates and that surprises me. That would be the first document that I would seek. Have you considered writing to the funeral homes in the area where they were buried? Where did you get the information that they were buried in RI? Is that person living or was that from a newspaper article? Have you checked the church records or written to the church they attended. Churches Records are an excellent source of information. Perhaps there are other sources that you could uncover information from that you have not searched yet. Regards Pat R
I requested Library info for Skaneatles, NY not to long ago. I was given the Onondaga County Public Library and one in Skaneatles. Here is my problem - No response from my email to Skaneatles and the County Public wants $11.00 to do two lookups and mail The Town library hasn't responded to my email. The g grandparents I'm looking for died in Skinny and were buried in RI. Trying to find WHERE they are buried. Have gotten death certificate on son born and died RI that was buried in the same place, but cemetery not listed. Providence RI Public Library found obit on g grandmother, but does not show where buried. Just afraid after paying the $11.00 they won't even find an obit for either one of them. I don't really need death certificates and figure there is a chance after paying for that lookup still wont' be any closer. So does anyone have any suggestions or is there sks who lives near one of these Libraries who would do a lookup for me? I have exact death dates in 1931 and 1938. Pam
