Alice, I haven't run across William, but have you found the following Salter and Mappa reference in Scholar in the Wilderness: Francis Adrian Van der Kemp, by Harry F. Jackson, (Syracuse Univ. Pr.: 1963), p. 316 "From time to time friends asked Van der Kemp for recommendations and he complied when possible. In 1821, he recommended Joseph Salter, a brother-in-law of John Mappa, to William Bayard and also to Frederick Gebhard. The young man was a fine, able clerk and wanted a position with a future in business (Hist. Society of Pennsylvania, Van der Kemp to Le Roy, Bayard, & Co., Nov 29, 1821)" There are many other references to the Mappa family of Oneida Co. Roy -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, June 24, 2003 8:08 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [NYONEIDA-L] SALTAR/SALTER I am searching for information about my ancestor WILLIAM SALTAR, who lived his final years with his daughter Sarah S. Mappa, in Trenton/Oldenbarnveld in the Mappa House (that is still standing.) He was born in Freehold, NJ in 1757, and died in 1853. WILLIAM, according to Stillwell's, Historical and Genealogical Miscellany, moved to Utica where he was an officer in the branch of the U.S. Bank. (I can't find any record of such.) In 1796, he and his father, Joseph Saltar, with others were appointed to attend to the lands of the Indians appointed to them. In 1801, near Oneida Lake, WILLIAM and two other men were appointed Commissioners to sell their lands. (I have found no record of this, either.) WILLIAM was the brother-in-law of Benjamin Walker, Baron von Steuben's aide and adopted son. One of his daughters married John Mappa and another married Asa Bill Sizer, Samuel Sizer's son. His wife Sarah died and was buried in Rome. With all this information, I still can't find any reference to WILLIAM's occupation, where he lived before joining his daughter in Trenton, etc.. If in your research, you have come across anything about WILLIAM SALTAR, I would appreciate hearing from you about it. Thanks in advance.
