6/29/2004 Dear Fellow Group Members, I would like please your assistance, opinions, etc about questions I have about my ancestors Josiah Stillman and William Stillman. Here is my quandray: I am attempting to put Josiah Stillman, an ancestor of mine, into the Daughters of the American Revolution. I have found out that they will not accept as adequate proof the book, The Stillman Family compiled by Francis D. Stillman, Jr. in 1969 because it either does not have sources with it or the copy I gave them did not have sources with it. The book is about George Stillman and his descendants. One problem is that there is a need to establish the link between Josiah born 9/16/1739 in Wethersfield, CT, married I think in CT in 1762-63 and died 5/13/1809 in Westmoreland or Whitestown, NY and his son William. Westmoreland and Whitestown are in Oneida Co, NY. William I believe was born in 1777 in Wethersfield, CT, married Betsy and then Sarah Stebbins (mother of my g-g-g-grandmother Betsy Elizabeth Stillman Stafford) in Deansboro, NY and died in Kirklan, Oneida Co, NY. Josiahs wife was Comfort Robbins. She was born 2/16/1738 in Wwethersfield, CT and died 2/21/1804 in Westmoreland, Oneida Co, NY. My otherproblem is that the DAR would like residency proof of Josiah when he served in the Revolutionary War. I have him living in Sandisfield, Mass, Westmoreland and Whitestown, NY but no years for these locations. DAR will not accept his war record as proof of residency. It says in Josiahs war record this: 1st Lieutenant Capt Elijah Deming's 11th Co(North Co in Sandisfield), 1st Berkshire Co Regt of Mass. militia; list of officers chosen by the several companies in said regiment as returned by Mark Hopkins and others, field officers, dated Great Barrington, March 26, 1776, as ordered in Council May 6, 1776, that said officers be commissioned, reported commissioned May 6, 1776, also Lieutenant, Capt Samuel Wolcotts Co, Col. Hopkins Regt services between 7/16/1776 and 85/1776 16 days; Company marched to Highlands, NY; roll sworn to in Berkshire Co. also Lieutenant Capt Elijah Deming's Co, Col Ashleys(Berkshire Co) Regt entered service 7/8/1777, discharged 7/21/1777, service 14 days, Company called out at the request of Maj Gen Schuyler and ordered to march to Fport Edward. It is my desire to address these questions posed by the DAR and I would like your help and advise in doing so. It is my thought to try and obtain a will for Josiah Stillman which might mention his son William but have no idea about obtaining land records to prove his residency. Am not sure if census records would be of use either. Thank you for your help. I apologize for the long e-mail. Hope to hear from you. Susan DeHart
