Re: Deerfield, NY, and St. Peter's Church I was a child there, and that was our family church. Deerfield, NY, is easy to find. From the NY State Thruway, take Exit 31 in North Utica. The roads have all changed around since I was a child, and you may need to check an on-line map first, but try to exit directly into North Utica, headed north (I believe that's North Genessee Street, headed away from the city), and don't try to get on the so-called Arterial, which is a mile or so to the west and is a by-pass that carries northbound traffic for the new Routes 8 and 12. One block north of the Thruway and parallel to it is Herkimer Road (Route 5). St. Peter's Church is on the north side of that road, less than a block east of the traffic lights. Three different buildings on the property have served as St. Peter's Church. The white frame one might or might not still be there right on Herkimer Road, as might the brick building next door to it. The newer (30+ years old?), most modern church building is behind them, on the west side of a parking lot, very close to Walker Road. There is also a school at St. Peter's. This location is still within the city limits of Utica at the present time, though it lies only half a mile or so from Deerfield, which lies immediately to the north. The address I have for the Deerfield town offices is 6329 Walker Road, and I have the phone number of the Town Clerk as 315-724-0413 (as of three years ago). The town offices are probably open only part-time--call ahead. Walker Road is the old Route 8. From the traffic lights in North Utica, just drive north. The road used to split, Trenton Road (old Rt. 12) to the left and Walker Road (old Rt. 8) to the right, but now I believe that all traffic must use Walker Road. The last time I asked where St. Peter's Cemetery was, I believe the Town Clerk told me that it was right on Walker Road, not far from North Utica. That would make sense, as St. Peter's Church is in the immediate vicinity. The Town Clerk or anyone else in the Deerfield town offices should be able to direct you to the cemetery, as could the staff of Heintz Funeral Home, which has a branch in North Utica right on Herkimer Road. (If you want a truly wonderful and economical Utica take-out meal, look practically across the street from the church but slightly east, and stop in the large supermarket in the shopping plaza on Herkimer Road and order a "fish fry." A Utica fish fry is fresh and heavenly!) North Utica and Deerfield, NY, carry fond childhood memories for me, especially in summer. Good luck! Joanne Garland (P.O. I am driving from Cleveland OH. Could some kind soul please tell me what I might expect to find if I go to Deerfield NY specifically. I have been having trouble finding it on a map and was wondering if the town still exists. I am looking for the burial place of my ggg grandparents Jean Pierre DECKER and Marie DECKER who according to a Rootsweb transcription are buried in St Peters Cemetery in Deerfield NY. Does this cemetery still exist? Is there somewhere that I may be able to find church records for St Peters Church and or cemetery. Your help would be appreciated.Thank you. R.
