Can anyone identify this Elizabeth Bigalow Hoffman? Since they married in Rome, NY I wonder if she is related to the Bigalows of Lewis Co., NY Deanna Subject: BIGAMOUS HOFFMAN A Wife each in Albany, Troy and Canada The Troy Whig says "On Christmas Eve Last William hoffman and Louisa Garner, a fair widow of 8th St., were united in marriage by Rev. Mr. Van Deusen, of this city, the honeymoon was a brief one, and the bride soon found to her sorrow that she had taken William" for worse. She received an anonymous letter a few days ago which charged Hoffman with having another wife, with legal claims, living at Adamsville, just outside Albany. She also had pretty positive proof that William was a man of very degraded propensities. He also wanted her to transfer to him what little property she was possessed of and all these things worked her up to a point of investigation. (She?) called upon officer Grecy? to help farret out the truth of the statement in the anonymous letter and he discovered Mrs. Elizabeth Hoffman, of Adamsville, need elizabeth Bigalow, who was married to the old Mormon at Rome, NY 26? Aug. 1872? by the Rev. William Searls of the M.E. Church of that place. This Mrs. Hoffman was willing to appear [at the arrest?] William but said her marriage certificate had been carried off by (him?) when he left her. A search warrant was secured and placed in the hands of Detectives Squire and Holmes yesterday. They proceeded to 636? River St. where Hoffman keeps a candy and popcorn store, searched his trunk and found the needed proof of his guilt as a bigamist. He was arrested and arrainged before Justice Donohue; both of his victims appeared against him. He was then remanded for further examination next tuesday. The relatives of the lawful Mrs. Joffman says the prisoner has still another victim in Canada. Mrs. Garner keeps a small confectionary store at 444 8th St. Albany NY Evening Journal Jan. 1, 1878
