Hi Carol You mention that your Amos Woodworth D abt 1791 and was in Florence NY. Oneida County was not formed until 1798 when it was taken from Herkimer County NY. Florence was not formed until 1805 when it was taken from the Town of Camden, Camden NY was not formed until 1799. You might want to do a little more in depth research to establish a closer DOD for Amos SR before trying to locate his burial location. First I would try to locate Land Records for Amos Woodworth SR to establish an exact Date of his arrival in the area and possible purchase of Land.. If Amos Sr did not purchase Land perhaps Amos Jr did and he could be buried on his property. Depending on finding his DOD you might have to check both Herkimer and Oneida County Records. In addition you might want to check for a Will or a Probate Record at the County Court House. Both of the above records could give you a great deal of information. Another source would be Military Records for Amos Sr. Depending on his DOB he could of served in the Service. If you are unable to go to the above archives or contact them during the day time hours I would suggest the oldest way of researching which is "Snail Mail" that existed long before the computer days. It is still a good way to collect informaion and also give you the Date of your request and a copy for your records for follow ups. Sometimes it is the only approach as many archives do not respond to telephone calls nor answer email requests. It does take a little longer, but one must emember "good Genealogy is not fast" and Fast Genealogy is not good". Give the above a try and see what you might come up with. Good Luck Pat R
Unfortunately, a disastrous fire in 1834 destroyed the Herkimer County Court House and all the legal/official records. The only legal records remaining are those that have been reconstructed from records held in the hands of individuals (precious few). The Herkimer County Historical Society may have something but most of their collection is centered on the towns that are currently within the county's borders Steve -----Original Message----- From: nyoneida-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nyoneida-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of PNUTREG@cs.com Sent: Monday, April 23, 2007 11:43 PM To: nyoneida@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NYONEIDA] Old Burial on "someone's" property Hi Carol You mention that your Amos Woodworth D abt 1791 and was in Florence NY. Carol, I have no information on where Amos Woodworth is buried or any land records and you may have the information below, found through Heritage Quest, but I'm sending it just in case you don't. I came across his name in a book titled, "Military Minutes of Council of Appointment of State of New York 1783-1832," Annual Report, Oneida County: Sixty-eight Regiment of Infantry, Ensign, Amos Woodworth Annals of Oneida County: Florence: The settlement was commenced in the fall of 1801. At this time Amos Woodworth, father of the Hon. Amos Woodworth now residing in the town, settled within about half a mile of its north line. According to what I read, he and 2 others were offered by William Henderson, NY, a bonus of fifty acres of land if they settled there in Florence. All three took the offer. Florence Hill is a hamlet of Florence and he may have settled in that area. Hope this helps find his location. Laura: Thank you for the info. I have been in contact with the DAR and I have quite a bit of family "info", but I Always look forward to seeing another book/printing regarding Amos Sr and Amos Jr. Do you know if the book you have mentioned is available for purchase? I know that Amos Jr. was active in the community and served as town supervisor at two different times and I know that Amos Sr. was in the Rev. War. I think the reason that Amos Jr. was buried in Oswego is that he was living with one of his children at the time of his death and they lived there, but I haven't found his wife's marker yet (Matilda Rice Woodworth). Her father, Eber Rice, (also my gr gr gr gr grandfather) was in the Rev. War, too! So far, I have verified 5 ancestors with the DAR and I am hoping to connect to more! Thanks again for the help.
