    3. from Utica, NY Dispatch newspaper   OBITUARY  GERTRUDE FRANCES HUGHES [1901-1915]   On Sunday morning, May 16, 1915, Gertrude Frances, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Hughes of Trenton, N. Y. passed into the Great Beyond. She had been ill about eight days with diphtheria. Gertrude was one of those lovely children who belong to the Lord from birth and her willing service was a shining example to all. She was always a loving and obedient daughter and a devoted sister. Besides her parents she leaves a brother Edwin. Only fourteen years of age she was a pure, white bud transplanted to bloom in Paradise.                             The nature of the decease prohibited a funeral but several friends gathered at a safe distance from the grave and sang a hymn. The pastor Rev. C. M. Fulton, read the service, a psalm, and offered prayer. On Sunday May 30 he held a memorial service in the church were many friends gathered to pay a last tribute to her memory. The church was decorated by her classmates in Sunday School and some of her favorite hymns were sung by the choir. The pastor related incidents in her life that could not fail to touch the hearts of all who heard and draw them closer to Jesus. Mrs. C. M. Fulton.   Her mother wrote: "On Memorial Day her Memorial Service was held in the Trenton [New York] First Methodist Church with her death being on May 15 at 7:30 PM. Her Sunday School Class marched to Wolcott Cemetery and decorated her grave." Gertrude was my maternal great aunt. Thanks to John S Wilkinson for this transcription.
