    3. That is a wonderful story! I'm so glad though that I can fly American Air Lines and be there in hours-on the same day. These men were from Missouri so may not have much to compare to men from New York but might provide some information of interest. One of the brothers had served in the Mexican-American War, which began in 1846. He was mustered out of the service about the time that gold was discovered. As he was familiar with the southwest from his military service, he convinced his brother to join him going to California. They signed on with a wagon train originating in Independence, MO and worked as oxen drivers taking supplies to the miners. The trip took about six months. Once there, one panned gold and the other gambled in San Francisco. When they decided to go home, they took a ship to Panama where they disembarked and crossed the isthmas by ox-cart. From Colon, Panama, they caught a windjammer to Havana, then New Orleans. They took a steamship up the Mississippi. _________________________________________________________________ You keep typing, we keep giving.
