Shirley, Many of the federal military records relating to WWI were lost in fire in 1973. However, before they were lost, NY State made abstracts which are now available from the NY State Archives in Albany (Record Series B0808). The Archives will do searches for a small fee. The application form is on their website. Unlike the NY Dept of Health, the turnaround time is quite good.
