I have found reference to an Oneida Academy later being called the Oneida Institute located in Whitesboro, for the preparation of poor young men in the ministry and was started by George Washington Gale around the early 1800's. This was later called the Whitestown Seminary. This was a church-backed school, established by the Presbyterians in 1827. The Free- will Baptists took over in the mid 1840's, closing in the 1880's.
