    3. There is a Town of Litchfield in Herkimer County. Towns in New York State are the next lower division of government below the counties; that is to say each county contains many towns. These towns, in turn may contain many small communities. Incorporated cities may be located within the boundaries of a town, but are separate from them, government-wise. I went looking for a map I saw long ago which shows the townships as of 1898, and have finally found it. It is called Tunison's railroad, distance, and township map of New York from latest surveys. and is located at the Library of Congress American Memory web site. Go to: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/gmdhtml/gmdhome.html below the graphic at the top of the page, on the line that starts "Search" Click on the "Creator Index" link. Find and click on the alphabetic group which includes Tunison - It says Soderberg (F. & H.) (Firm), but I believe that could change if they add more maps. Scroll down to Tunison, E. L. A small map will appear. Click on it. What you do then may vary according to your equipment. I choose 640x480 and the second dot after "Zoom In", then click on the general Utica area. The map will scroll if you re-click to adjust the map to the area you wish to view. The city of Utica is close to the Oneida-Herkimer County line. The town of Litchfield is below and slightly to the right of it, colored in green. I assume this is the Litchfield you seek. There are many wonderful maps available through this site. Spend some time browsing from the links on the page whose address I gave above. It is possible to download a viewer, and the maps which interest you to your computer so you can examine them off-line at your leisure. It may be a better way to view them, but I haven't tried it. If you follow the cities and town links there are some of the perspective drawn maps that were once popular. I have been able to identify my great-grandfather's house in Utica on one of them. Mary H maryh@telenet.net PS: How about the last name "Georgens"? I have a couple of those in my records. I am not related to them, but my great-uncle married Carrie Geiersbach, whose sister was married to a man named George Georgens. They were from Utica, but I think lived in the NYC area later.
