    3. MWalt, Yes this area of upstate NY was sparsely populated prior to 1770 but the great influx mostly from Mass. and Conn. began after the rev. The major populations centers then were the future Utica area, Deerfield (just north of Utica) and a few around the area of Fort Stanwix (Rome). Unless your ancestor had Palentine roots you should assume that they migrated here after 1770.
