The church secretary at St. Joseph's might be able to tell you which other churches existed in Utica that early. They will search their own (and St. Patrick's Church) baptismal/marriage records for a modest donation, and they prefer to have your question in writing, giving plenty of information. Other ways to find maiden name of Elizabeth's mother might be: - Elizabeth's death certificate (gives mother's maiden name, if known). - Elizabeth's obituary (often gives mother's maiden name). - Ellen's gravestone, if located near that of James (often uses only maiden name). - Family graves near to Ellen's. - Census records (look for an elderly relative living in the household, or next door!). - City directories (same as above--see other household members). - James' death certificate/obituary (may provide name of his spouse). - Church marriage record for James and Ellen. - Names of witnesses to the marriage. There are many routes around seeming brick walls. Good luck!
