The information regarding Prospect, NY was derived from his daughter, Amanda L. Sweet's, 1933 death certificate. James began appearing in the Town of Russia 1860 census as a farmhand/lumberman. Later, he had joint ventures with various dairy farmers and was also a lumberman. Prior to the 1860 census, I have been unable to detect his existence or origin. The subject, James Sweet, married possibly in the Town of Russia, Herkimer Cty. abt. 1870, to an Arris (aka Ardis and Allis) Wheeler? Ardis was supposedly b. at Cape Vincent, Jefferson Cty., abt 1853. If this is so, I believe that her family migrated to the Town of Russia early in her life. I could not find any data re: Ardis in the 1850-60 censuses. Any information regarding James Sweet will be greatly appreciated. Robert Baldwin, RBALDWIN1954@cs.com
