ROBERTS, 79, WAS CHECKER CHAMPION WEST WINFIELD - John Franklin Roberts, 79, died at his home in E. Winfield June 27, 1958 after a long illness. He was born in Winfield Jan 14, 1879, and attended W.Winfield Schools. Later Oberlin College, Ohio. He married Emma Keeney, who survives him in Oberlin, June 13, 1900, after which they returned to E.Winfield where he lived until the time of his death. After graduation he taught telegraphy there before accepting a post as an agent for the DL&W Railroad in East Winfield, for whom he worked for 54 years. During his lifetime he pursued a hobby of checker playing; at one time writing a column on the game for a New York City newspaper. Hw was a member of the champion New York State Checker Assn., and for many years was a match champion. *** unfortunately, the rest of the obit was cut off by the copier.
