He would not have given the wrong information. When the census takers wrote down names they often spelled them the way they sounded. Not necessarily how they should have been spelled. Also when the names were copied from the census by individuals and written up in the index, the person reading the census may not have been able to read the census takers hand writing. Those old styles of writing can be pretty tricky. A C could possible be mistaken for a G, etc. That is why it pays to look for other spellings when you can't find the one you are looking for. Oneida is the county and Lee was (maybe still is) a town in Oneida county. I will take a look at all of the possibles I can think of for Cray and Hicks in Oneida County.
