Janet, The wills or probate files will be in the Surrogate Court clerks office for Oneida County. Any deeds or discharged mortgages will be in the County Clerks office. Does the marriage date information also make reference to a particular church? Finding the church they belonged to would be the best bet for family information. Dear Friends, I need help. I'm not going to be able to get to Rome this summer, and wonder if any kind person might be going to the Jervis Library sometime soon who would be willing to look for an obituary for me from a Rome newspaper: CAROLINE FINK d 16 Feb 1909 I have found one obituary from the Utica Herald Dispatch where it says she died that morning at the home of her nephew, John Streifert on South James Street. I also found her grave in the Rome Cemetery. She is connected to these families: Ben Snyder (Bentschneider), Burr, Streifert, Netzband. Sometimes the Rome paper had a fuller obituary for those from Rome than what the Utica papers printed, so that's why I would especially like to know if there is one in the Rome Daily Sentinel. Hi Carol. I can't help you at all. My line is the McGoughs. Day would be a collateral and I've done no work on it other then what I've posted. There is a possibility that Judge John Walsh has included your line of Day in his compilation of Irish Pioneers of Utica. This source is at Utica Public Library. It is several volumes of Family Groups sheets. Judge Walsh did the work many years ago. Apparently he interviewed families and searched obituaries. Dorothy, I have several Olive Salisbury's, but none married a Brown, although I don't have spouses for all of them. I also have an F.W. Salisbury, b Aug 5, 1858, as well as numerous Salisbury's with names beginning with F, but without my having a middle initial for them. If this might fit with what you have, please contact me. I have over a thousand Salisbury's in my list. My line is Edward Salisbury who came to what would be Oneida County in 1792 with seven of his sons. Hi Just looking through your names and noticed Rice and Bynam. Have you found any connections with the names of Salisbury/Salsbury or Tiffany? My families were in Madison, Oneida and Oswego Counties. Kathy -----Original Message----- From: Michael J. McDonald <m.mcdonald@computer.org> To: nyoneida@rootsweb.com Sent: Sun, 1 Jul 2007 7:14 pm Subject: Re: [NYONEIDA] Oneida Co. families Sorry to reply so late; I just noticed the Richards reference looking back through old postings. I'm looking for John Richards who was born in Wales and died about 1840-1850, I believe at Utica, New York. When his daughter Jane Elizabeth (aka Jennie) was "quite young." His wife Elizabeth and family moved to Ticonderoga, NY where they are listed in the 1850 census. Elizabeths obituary palces the marriage in Johnsburg in 1830. I have a sketchy reference to a John Richards who worked on the Erie canal. Would you have an idea of what church the Welsh would have attended? Jennie was a member of the Baptist church in Ticonderoga until her marriage when she joined her husband in the Episcopal church. >From Utica, NY Dispatch, Nov. 1, 1943, top of page 10: [This caption is under a photograph.] FELLOWSHIP NIGHT in Central Church Chapel found, from the left, Vincent G. Brown, The Rev. Russell S. Brown, pastor; Dr. Albert E. Legg, William C. Hughes and E. O. Folsom reviewing events from 1912, when the building was dedicated, to this month, when the mortgage on it was paid and burned. * "Methodism itself has followed the lead of Central Church of Utica in many regards," said Dr. Albert E. Legg, its first pastor and honor guest last night at the Fellowship dinner attended in the church house by 800. The event was in celebration of the recent payment of the mortgage on the chapel and in commemoration of the laying of its corner stone in 1912. Doctor Legg recalled that Central Church pioneered in organizing a business women's unit and again in leading the way to federating all of its women's societies, a practice now established in most other churches. Mrs. Legg was the organizer of the business and women's unit, now known as the Wesleyan Service Guild. The Rev. Russell S. Brown, pastor, read greetings from Dr. Edgar Brown, Schaghticoke, who laid the chapel foundations in 1912 and who now is 86, and from Dr. William J. Hart, Lacons, who was minister of the church when it was called South Methodist. I.W. J. McClain, lay leader, gave a short talk on congregational objectives and the Rev. John Warren, district superintendent, dismissed the assemblage with a prayer. The supper was served by Mizpah Circle members, under the chairmanship of Mrs. George Walker." ================================== Thanks to John S Wilkinson for this transcription. OBITUARY Robert Lee Hughes Dies in California Word has been received here of the death of Robert Lee Hughes, which occurred recently at Paso Robles, Calif., where he had resided the last four years. Mr. Hughes was a native of the "Ninety-six" neighborhood of the town of Remsen [New York] and a cousin of Lewis Owens, Prospect [New York]. He spent most of his life in Chicago, [Illinois] where he was superintendent of one of the public schools. He was a deacon in the Paso Robles Congregational Church. Mr. Hughes leaves his wife, Anna Kilse? Hughes, two sons, Judson Hughes Glendale and John Hughes Alexandria?, a brother William J. Hughes, South Dakota and sister, Mrs. Mary A. Everett?, Kansas. [Hand written note written by my great grandmother, Mrs. Mary Gouge Hughes reads "Anna Barrett's husband". This newspaper clipping is beside another newspaper clipping dated Nov. 29, 1934 in her scrapbook. I do not know if he is related or not.] Transcribed by, Janice Hughes Jordan <jnrose@webtv.net>
Thank you to all who replied and led me to other links. The Old Fulton Postcards site is terrific. Now if I could only find out the cause of death. Is there anyone who has any ideas about that, since he (Frank Marthage/Martoccio) died in Los Angeles? Rumor has it that it wasn't of natural causes. Thanks again to all. Things have been a little hectic here in New York with graduations, etc. Susan ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
Actually, I'm not related to these Smiths. I am connected thru Abigail's first husband, Jared Olcott. Their son, Edward Olcott married Esther Brower. Esther's sister, Mary Ann Brower married William Martin. William Martin's father (also named William Martin) had a father Ebenezer Martin Sr. who is my 4th great grand parent. So what does that make me??? I think it makes me unrelated! hahaha Sorry about that. On the Oneida Web site there is a Town of Lee Census of 1814. Abel, Daniel, Ephraim, Levi, and Thomas. Abigail's and her husband, Mr. Smith named their 2nd son Ephraim. Naming the 2nd son after the father was very common. Often the 1st male was named after the wife's father. An educated guess might be that Abigail's husband was Ephraim Smith. Now do research on that and work backwards to see if he was married to Abigail. At this point that's my guess.
