Very frankly, when we went to NARA to do research it appeared the help thought they were doing us a favor and seemed rather unambitious. I have no doubt that the employee group has changed by now and I hope they are more helpful. I know a bit how an office work and it was not a totally helpful experience. I have been to Washington and I know the tediousness of making so many copies. Our universal complaint is that not many of us can afford $75 to $125 for one ancestor's Military file. The compiled military service record has always been separate from the pension files. They usually don't contain information of genealogical value. While these new fees are expensive, they really aren't out of line with the cost for the manpower, supplies and postage used to create the file copies. They knew that they could not charge the $125 that they first indicated to us, this spring. So to get around that, they charge $75 for the Pension, $25 for the Land Bounty Warrant and $25 for the Service record. Keeping the service record separate from the Pension is miserable to think about. The service record is important. This is how siblings, brother-in-laws etc are found. Before we complain you should read the whole story. Dick EASTMAN has it on his site. I was one of the apparant few that wrote them. They did reduce from what they wanted to charge. They can not make a profit but lost the GRANT the government used to give them to keep the fees lower. The difference has to come from somewhere. You also have between now and the 1 October date to order data you wish at old prices. I am thrilled it's not the fees they suggested and surely will not complain to help them maintain them for future generations. Subject: Re: [NYONEIDA] Increased NARA fees GMF, Have you ever researched these files? My husband and I did this summer and I was amazed at the number of papers, their age, and how hard it would be to photocopy them. I'm not surprised the fees have been increased, and they certainly did listen to the complaints and the suggestions from people because this fee schedule is adjusted to the original proposal. Before I went all I could think of is how unfair the fee increase was. After I went, I thought it probably should be higher. Cheryl > What a ripoff! > > The new fees for Pension records go into effect Oct. 1, 2007 > >>
The new fees for Pension records go into effect Oct. 1, 2007 Civil War Pension records $75.00 for up to and including 100 pages. if more than 100 pp in the file, NARA will send notice of how many additional pages there is and cost is at .65 each page. At this point you have the option to remit payment or decline. This fee applies to post Civil War records also. from Utica, NY Dispatch newspaper OBITUARY GERTRUDE FRANCES HUGHES [1901-1915] On Sunday morning, May 16, 1915, Gertrude Frances, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Hughes of Trenton, N. Y. passed into the Great Beyond. She had been ill about eight days with diphtheria. Gertrude was one of those lovely children who belong to the Lord from birth and her willing service was a shining example to all. She was always a loving and obedient daughter and a devoted sister. Besides her parents she leaves a brother Edwin. Only fourteen years of age she was a pure, white bud transplanted to bloom in Paradise. The nature of the decease prohibited a funeral but several friends gathered at a safe distance from the grave and sang a hymn. The pastor Rev. C. M. Fulton, read the service, a psalm, and offered prayer. On Sunday May 30 he held a memorial service in the church were many friends gathered to pay a last tribute to her memory. The church was decorated by her classmates in Sunday School and some of her favorite hymns were sung by the choir. The pastor related incidents in her life that could not fail to touch the hearts of all who heard and draw them closer to Jesus. Mrs. C. M. Fulton. Her mother wrote: "On Memorial Day her Memorial Service was held in the Trenton [New York] First Methodist Church with her death being on May 15 at 7:30 PM. Her Sunday School Class marched to Wolcott Cemetery and decorated her grave." Gertrude was my maternal great aunt. Thanks to John S Wilkinson for this transcription. Janice Jordan <jnrose@webtv.net>

Hello, I'm looking for information on a Asa Drake born abt. 1793 in New York. He married Sophronia and had the following children that I know of: Asa b. 1823 married Mary Pangborn Rachel b. 1825 married William Moses John b. abt. 1827 died 1875 Wesley b. 1830 married Mary Loveland If anyone on the list is researching this family, I would be glad to share what information I have. Sophronia died in 1852, I do not know what happened to Asa. I believe he may have married a second time to Hulda ?, from what I found in the 1860 census. These families were from the town of Florence. Thank-you, Elissa ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour
HI again, I am really digging for more information. THE NEHGS site list 's 2 PROBATES. Neither are for NOEL JONES. (1)NOEL JONES who was in PARIS, Onidea Co NY was witness on will for ASAHELS HILLS. 1811. NOEL JONES who was in Allegany CO 1835 was mentioned as son in law of dcd Samuel YAW whom died in Brookfield MADISON CO> NY. 29 Dec 1835 NOW I found this NOEL JONES in ALLEGANY Co. NY above mentioned and have data on him. So who is the NUEL JONES with John R JONES ?? (2) So who was the NUEL JONES who lived with JOHN R JONES both born NY living in WARD 2 Utica NY 1860. He is also the same age as this other NOEL JONES(1) whom's will was protested in Allegany because he did not recognize his family at death only last wife and one child. I am sure JOHN R JONES must be a son of this NUEL JONES. He (NUEL) obviously worked for an hotel. Does the county have a probate packet system for non willed people, NEHGS only goes up to 1850. ? John R may have had some land and Nuel may have sold land prior to this age. ?? I am looking for the parents of NOYES JONES born 1809 in Petersburg Rensselaer Co NY. Parents were NOEL JONES and Susannah JONES he (Noel) being born near 1785 near Albany NY. His Grandfather would be Silas JONES SR. These are the only two on the census that match the time frame both are mentioned above. SusiCP
I am looking for data on( NUEL/ NUWELL/ NOEL /NOWELL) JONES born around 1785 probably near Albany in Rensselaer Co of today. I found in the 1860 ? City directory on line on site for Oneida Co .JONES, Newell N., clerk 93 Genesee, bds John R. Jones’. I can find no cemetery information, no death information, if Baptist ie church information. IF this is the father of my NOYES JONES I would like to learn that. :>) I have court records and one census record that shows NOEL JONES b ie 1785 lived Petersburg, Rensselaer Co NY had NOYES JONES 1809. NOEL JONES ma Susannah Last name not known JONES. Anyone with data I would appreciate knowledge. I suspect he died not much later since he would be near 85 years of age. I suspect JOHN R JONES is son?? I read of the two JOHN R JONES one is from WALES that would not be my line. This family has been in USA since 1740s and before. Where do I find Probate records? Does anyone live near Utica to check for me. Susi Jones P SusiCP@aol.com
