Can anyone identify this Elizabeth Bigalow Hoffman? Since they married in Rome, NY I wonder if she is related to the Bigalows of Lewis Co., NY Deanna Subject: BIGAMOUS HOFFMAN A Wife each in Albany, Troy and Canada The Troy Whig says "On Christmas Eve Last William hoffman and Louisa Garner, a fair widow of 8th St., were united in marriage by Rev. Mr. Van Deusen, of this city, the honeymoon was a brief one, and the bride soon found to her sorrow that she had taken William" for worse. She received an anonymous letter a few days ago which charged Hoffman with having another wife, with legal claims, living at Adamsville, just outside Albany. She also had pretty positive proof that William was a man of very degraded propensities. He also wanted her to transfer to him what little property she was possessed of and all these things worked her up to a point of investigation. (She?) called upon officer Grecy? to help farret out the truth of the statement in the anonymous letter and he discovered Mrs. Elizabeth Hoffman, of Adamsville, need elizabeth Bigalow, who was married to the old Mormon at Rome, NY 26? Aug. 1872? by the Rev. William Searls of the M.E. Church of that place. This Mrs. Hoffman was willing to appear [at the arrest?] William but said her marriage certificate had been carried off by (him?) when he left her. A search warrant was secured and placed in the hands of Detectives Squire and Holmes yesterday. They proceeded to 636? River St. where Hoffman keeps a candy and popcorn store, searched his trunk and found the needed proof of his guilt as a bigamist. He was arrested and arrainged before Justice Donohue; both of his victims appeared against him. He was then remanded for further examination next tuesday. The relatives of the lawful Mrs. Joffman says the prisoner has still another victim in Canada. Mrs. Garner keeps a small confectionary store at 444 8th St. Albany NY Evening Journal Jan. 1, 1878

New YOrk Mills is partly in Whitestown and partly in New Hartford. The part that is in New Hartford is known as the Upper Mills. Less than 100 homes there in 1860. By the time your family was there, it was mainly a Polish community, with many factories. When searching for Direcctories for this area for your time period you would need to search NH and Whitestown directories. I don't know when I'm going up again. Soon I hope. I need to but research takes me in so many other directions right now. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tee" <irishgirl@earthlink.net> To: <nyoneida-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, September 03, 2007 11:59 AM Subject: [NYONEIDA] New York Mills NY >I am hoping someone can help me . Dear List: I am trying to find information about the ROBERTS family that lived in Waterville, Town of Sangerfield, from 1925 on. John ROBERTS bought a "gents' furnishings store" in that year and moved to Waterville from Boonville (or maybe Utica), according to an article in the Boonville Herald. I have found this and several other newspaper items about the ROBERTS family at fultonhistory.com. There are articles at this site about other ROBERTS families, especially about a Mr. and Mrs. Pearl ROBERTS, which can be confusing because John ROBERTS' daughter was named Pearl. John's wife was Merle ROBERTS; I do not know her maiden name; some of these articles make me think that her maiden name may have been GILLETT. Some of the articles are about visits back and forth between Pearl ROBERTS and her friends, Doris Zimmerman and Amanda Jones. There are some items about a Miss Pearl ROBERTS who must have been about ten years older than the one I am researching. There is an item about a wedding shower held for a Miss Pearl ROBERTS in 1926. My Pearl ROBERTS would have been only ten or eleven years old in 1926 so this item must be about the other Miss Pearl Roberts. There are several items about church and school activities that are, I think, about my Pearl ROBERTS. I have the 1930 U.S. census entry for John ROBERTS' family in the Village of Waterville, Town of Sangerfield. John was 51 then (born about 1879), Merle was 39 (born about 1891), and Pearl was 14 (born about 1916). I have the 1880 Federal census for the John ROBERTS I believe to be the father of John ROBERTS. The father lived in Plainfield, Otsego County. His wife's given name was Elizabeth, and the children are William, John and Elizabeth ROBERTS. John and Elizabeth were born in Wales; their children were born in New York State. Can anyone tell me anything more about this John ROBERTS family? I am trying to find out everything I can about them here in the hope of finding the link between them and my DAVIES family in Wales. My gg grandfather, Lewis DAVIES, married Catherine ROBERTS in Bangor, Caernarvonshire, Wales, in March 1850. Lewis and his father, Richard DAVIES, were both born in Celynnin, Merionethshire, Lewis about 1814 and Richard about 1784. I am sure that there is a family relationship between Catherine ROBERTS and the two John ROBERTSes I mention above. Thank you very much for any help you can give me. The Allen County Public Library (ACPL) in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Brigham Young University Harold B. When complete, it will be the most comprehensive collection of city and county histories on the WebÂand access will be free at <http://www.familyhistoryarchive.byu.edu>www.familyhistoryarchive.byu.edu. The digital history project will target over 100,000 published family histories and thousands of local histories that are rich in names as well as biographical and genealogical data associated with those names. "Publishing those collections from the three libraries involved will make a significant and attractive family history digital library online for genealogists and historians," said David Rencher, director of Records and Information for FamilySearch. "I believe the most immediate, substantial contribution of this collaboration will be the addition of local history materials," said Allen County Public Library's Genealogy Center Manager, Curt Witcher. The collaborative project will digitally scan thousands of historic city directories, as well as city and county histories from North America. The ACPL and the Family History Library have the largest collections of city and county histories from North America. "I believe the strength of our two well known, well used, and well loved institutions working together is a terrific benefit to the genealogical community," added Witcher. Once digitized, the collections will have "every word" search capability, which allows users to search by name, location, date, or other field across the collection. The search results are then linked to high quality digital images of the original publication. Digitization efforts have begun. This book has been scanned and is online on the Oneida County page. It's under Towns > Camden However, the search engine will not pick up the info from the scans. Patti....Have youu explored a connection to the Phelps family in and around Camden, NY Oneida County? The name Ransom Phelps was familiar to me in the history of Camden so I pulled out "The Pioneer History of the Town of Camden" by the Mrs's Pike, Frisbie, Edic nd Conant in 1897. Here I find mention of Benjamin Phelps who m. Sally d.o. Daniel and Esther Parke in 1805...both families arriving from Ct after the Rev war when this part on NY was opened to settlers. The area settled, S/E of Camden, was for many years called Phelpsville. Benj and Sally were parents of eight children whose names are told in this book. Their son Albert (a twin with Albro) was born Feb 4, 1808 . Albert m. Martha Fish d.o.Jesse Fish esq. of Williamstown, Oswego County,NY. Albert and Martha had four children, one of whom was Charles A. Phelps who married Harriet Matoon......Charles A and Harriet Phelps have two children (the authors are speaking in the present tense...at the time of publication of this book)....their children are: Howard Matoon and Ransom Phelps. In "The Pioneer History" there is a chapter about Phelpsville--Ranney Phelps, the fourth child of Benj and Sally Phelps. Names in this chapter reporting the history of this place include MALAY/ TUTTLE SHEPARD/ YAGER /STEVENSON as names marrying into the Phelps family early. Another paragraph lists neighbors in 1839: ELISHA RANSOM, RICHARD AND JOHN ROSA, ORRAMAN TUTTLE, HORACE WILSON, ALVA HAZEN, WILLIAM WINNE AND ELIAKIM STODDARD.
