Janice, Cazenovia also has a historical society and the Cazenovia Public Library has old records too. These are additional resources for you. Betsy Kennedy is the head town librarian, the main village of Cazenovia telephone number might yield you the historical society contact. Janice, Cazenovia Seminary is now Cazenovia College. It is now co-ed and takes up much of the space, bulding and parking in the town of Caznovia much to the town residents dismay at times. If you want information on your relative the collage has a historian who keeps historical things. I know because I gave my aunts seminary yearbooks to them a couple og years ago. My guess is that they have a website you could access from a library and the telephone number is: 315-655-8283. I go to Cazenovia frequently as I have family there, nice town, the college now owns the theatre and the Lincklaen House. from UTICA DISPATCH November 1922 * Dinner to Mark 75th Anniversary Of Central Methodist Dedication * The 75th anniversary of the dedication of Central Methodist Church will be celebrated at a fellowship dinner, Nov. 30 and at an anniversary service, Sunday, Dec. 3. It was announced by the Rev. Russell S. Brown, pastor. * The Rev. John A. Redmond, pastor of St. Paul's Methodist Church, Niagara Falls, will be the speaker at the fellowship dinner, scheduled for 6:30. Mr. Redmond and the Rev. Albert G. Legg are the only surviving former pastors of the church. It was during the former's pastorate that a director of religious education was added to the staff. * Guest Preacher at the anniversary service at 11 a. m., Dec 3, will be the Rev. John Warren, superintendent of the Mohawk District. * The building known as the Central Church was erected by an organization then known as the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Utica and was dedicated Feb. 28, 1860. * The members of Central can trace the history of their church back to 1808 when the first building for Methodist worship was erected in Charlotte St. in 1815 this group was known as the First Society of Methodist Episcopal Church in Utica and was part of the Oneida District of the Genesee Conference. * In 1924 a chapel was built at 24 Bleecker St. and the worshippers were known as the Bleecker St. Society. In 1847, 17 members of this Society formed the State St. Methodist Episcopal Church, with the church at 307 State St. * These two societies united to form the First Methodist Episcopal Church and this group erected the present Central Church in 1869 a cost of $80,000. William Reddy was the first pastor. * Central Church took its name in 1920 when three Methodist Societies were amalgamated into one. These societies were the First Methodist Church, whose building was used; the South Street Church and the Coke? or Colte? Memorial Church. The South Street Church was organized in 1852 by 80 members of the Bleecker St. Society. The Coke? or Colte? Memorial (Welsh Methodist Episcopal Church) was Organized July 1, 1849. * Mr. Legg became pastor of Central Church in 1920, when its new name was adopted. Succeeding pastors had been the late Dustin? C. Johnson, the late L. D. Woodmancy, the late Charles Ru??, the late Walter B. Smith, and Mr. Redmond, who preceded Mr. Brown. * The church was freed from debt on Nov. 1, 1943, when the mortgage on the chapel was paid. During the present pastorate extensive repairs have been made (The rest of the article is either missing or unreadable about interior and exterior, etc.) * Transcribed by, John S Wilkinson Rome, NY * My note: Thank you :-) John for this transcription. This article was pasted in a scrapbook of Mary GOUGE HUGHES [Mrs. Edwin] 1863-1944 of Trenton, Oneida Co., NY. She was my maternal great grandmother. Janice Jordan <jnrose@webtv.net>

Thanks for all the replies for St. Mary's cemetery. I contacted them and they said it's still an active cemetery and they gave me directions on how to get there so it shouldn't be too hard to find. I hope to spend a day there next week, looking for one of my lines. Wish me luck. If anyone needs a grave to be found while I'm there, let me know. George
For George - I did a google search for "St. Mary's" + Constableville and came up with an address. 2200 N. Main St. Constableville, NY 13325 (315)397-2556 Hope this is the right one. Jessie
turn off route 26N into village of Constableville. Take the road that goes to Fish Creek & High Market. It goes up the hill past the school. There is the old cemetery on the left and the new one is on the right. ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

My GG-Grandfather was James Smiley born abt/bef 1838/1840 in Ireland emigrated to America before 1865..I have been unable to find an immigration record for him, This was in the time of the Potato Famines in Ireland and maybe that is why I cannot find a record. I do not know if he came alone or with family????? I know his approximant year of Birth and location of birth from the 1880 NY Census records. He married Sarah Ann Parker sometime before 1868 and the birth of their first (known) child. Sarah Ann Parker was born 3 Mar 1838 in England, I also do not know when or with whom she may have emigrated to America...Although I do believe that one of her sons may have married a PARKER cousin..more on that later Sarah Ann Parker was married first to William Wood and he died in the Civil war, they had one son...Joseph Wood and he was only a baby when his dad was killed...SO Joseph was raised by James Smiley, the 2nd husband of Sarah Parker. James & Sarah had 3 more children.. 1. Samuel Smiley 4 Aug 1868 born OH or NY ? died 25 Mar 1950, CA, married Louise WUST/WUEST on 10 Dec 1887 in Oneida Co, NY. They had 3 children (William "Bill", Eunice "Susie", and Alice).all moved with their parents to Santa Barbara Co, CA. in the 1920s (Louise was the daughter of John (Johannes) Wust & his wife Augusta, the family immigrated to NY in 1884 from GERMANY, on the "Bohemia." 2. Mary Elizabeth Smiley abt 1871 NY, - 30 Aug 1898 Village of Ilion, German Flatts, Herkimer Co, NY married Joseph ZELIE, they had one son Anson J Zelie (there could have been more children??) and Anson married Carrie N Backer of Herkimer Co, NY. Joseph S Zelie and M Elizabeth Zelie are both buried in the Village of Ilion Cemetery...If anyone has taken photos of their headstones, I would TRULY love a copy by email. Also I would like to know HOW to contact the person/persons that manage the Village Cemetery, to see if I can obtain copies of the funeral records of Joseph and Mary Elizabeth (Smiley) Zelie. 3. James Henry Smiley 27 Nov 1878, NY, died 7 Dec 1968, Village of Ilion, Herkimer Co, NY...he married Mary S PARKER (could she have been related to his mother???) (Mary's parents were George Parker & Ellen Landon) Mary died 1971 and she was back in Oneida Co, NY after the death of her husband James Henry Smiley. Both James Henry and Mary were buried in Crown Hill Memorial Park Cemetery, Hartford, Oneida Co, NY. Now for a very strange fact...My GG-Grandfather, James Smiley's name was recorded in the Family Bible of my Great Grandfather (Samuel Smiley) and his wife, Louise Wust/Wuest as ROBERT SMILEY.but the census records show Sarah Ann Smiley & her children living with JAMES SMILEY, not Robert.so could his name have been James Robert or Robert James SMILEY..I lean towards the latter as My Great Grandmother was of German descent, very set in what was the CORRECT way to do things. If his name was Robert James, and he went by James, she STILL would have recorded his Christian NAME...not a middle name in the family bible. I have given a bunch of information in hopes that someone may recognize one of the children and/or their spouses..possibly a name and location may be what is recognized..I have HIT a major STONE wall with the family of James Smiley...I need to know more about him and his wife both before I can begin to research either one's family in Ireland or England. One other item of note, while researching the SURNAME SMILEY on the Herkimer County site, I can across an ANSON SMILEY that served in the Civil War..Maybe he was the father of my James Smiley, James' daughter, Mary Elizabeth (Smiley) Zelie named her only son, Anson..could this have been in honor of her grandfather????? SO MANY Questions????? Any help or suggestions MOST WELCOME. Carrie Bias Hoffert
Hi, Seeking the names of parents of Jonas Platt (James B.) Cook [1811-1880]. My 'cousin' Arlene Cook wrote this letter below: Jonas Platt Cook (aka James B. Cook) worked for the NJ & NY Railroad in the 1800's. Here is what I know: Jonas was born 1811 in Madison or Oneida Co., NY. He married Catherine Fuller of Oneida Co., before 1840. From census information, I have the following: 1850 Westmoreland, Oneida Co., NY: Jonas P. Cook, listed as a mechanic 1860 Harrington, Bergen Co., NJ: Johnas P. Cook, listed as a track master 1870 Orangetown, Rockland Co., NY: James B. Cook, listed as track supervisor RR 1880 Washington Twp., Bergen Co., NJ: Jonas P. Cook, listed as track master In 1880 Jonas was living in the household of James Cummings (he was a blacksmith). Also in this household were: Jacob D. Hasbrouck, age 38, superintendent NJ&NY RR L.B. Van Wagnen, age 50, master mechanic Jonas P. Cook died in mid-December 1880 and is buried in the Rockland Cemetery, Sparkill, Rockland Co., NY. Would you have any idea who would have more in-depth records of the NJ&NY Railroad? I greatly appreciate any assistance you can give to me. Thanks, Janice <jnrose@webtv.net> and Arlene
I posted this earlier on Lewis County site but no responses. Anyone know where St. Mary's cemetery in Constableville, Lewis County, is located? Is St. Mary's church still active? George

Hi Wendy! I would appreciate any information you could provide on the family line. Trades, roots, etc. Would you know if there were any of their descendants left. Tina was my grt. Anyone on this list descend from Barent (Erroneously shown as Barney)Vandewalker, baptized 1783 in Schenectady, NY and who later lived in Oneida Co., probably Town of Western? As an aside -- anyone know what was the name of the family that once owned the Stonehedge Nursing Home at 801 N. James ST., Rome, NY? It may have some genealogical implications.
