    2. Hi Wendy! I had about given up. The whole clan seems to be buried in North Bay in a cemetery. Tina was my paternal gr. grandmother, but I can't so much as find any family with so much as a picture of her. It is also odd to me that she died young, perhaps in childbirth, but only one note of a second child. May have been born dead or died with her during labor. She was buried with her family, and thereafter her husband re-married. He's buried in Camden as I recall. I just have no idea what kind of folks they were, or anything of their lives. They are part of who I am! Thanks for any assistance. Regards, David in NW Fl., but a native Roman! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Wendy Scalfaro" <wscalfaro@hotmail.com> To: <nyoneida@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, September 29, 2007 11:26 AM Subject: Re: [NYONEIDA] Cole/Cooper Oneida Co. 3. The 1907 Oneida County Atlas shows section 76 is on the Western edge of the Town of Bridgewater. Section 84 is immediately East of section 76. The stream flowing through section 76 appears to be a small (unnamed) brook, rather than a river. The West Branch of the Unadilla River is on the Eastern side of the Town of Bridgewater and forms the Eastern boundary of the Village of Bridgewater. However, this is far removed from sections 76 and 84. The 1907 residents of section 76 are the Evans Brothers and the Bellfield family. W.E. Clark is to the South in section 75. C.M. Crumb is to the East in section 84. The road from the Village of Bridgewater to the Village of Sangerfield passes through section 76. Also, School No. 7 is located in section 76. 3. You will need a copy of an Oneida county map that has the lots and sections laid out on it to determine which river this property borders. A deed in his name as the grantee (buyer) would be more specific. A subsequent deed as the grantor (seller) would let you know how long this property was owned by him. 3. I would look for records at whatever church they might have attended. A check for wills/probate files would have the death dates should you be able to locate them. Deeds recorded as the grantor for either with the notation of "estate" might also have the death information. 2. I found my very elusive ancestors through Oneida County Land Records, even learned that my GGG-grandfather, listed as "yeoman" about 1810, was listed as a "lunatic" in land records in 1845. Here's how I did it: I went to the LDS Family History Library site online _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) , then clicked on Library, Catalog, places, Oneida, NY, deeds, grantor index and grantee index for my surname. Then I went to my local Family History Library, ordered the deed indexes on microfilm. In about 3 weeks they arrived, I checked the indexes, found my suspected ancestors and ordered microfilms of the actual deeds. Some of the things you can learn are: name of spouse, names of children, siblings, name of parents, neighbors, where they came from, where they went, etc. Often a deed which transfers upon death is the only record of death if the ancestor did not leave a will; death certificates were not issued that early. There is a small rental charge for the microfilms, I ended up paying more so that the films could stay at my local center for all to use. The people at the Family History Center were welcoming, helpful, and cheered with me when I found out that my GGG-Gramps was really named "Thomas", not "Samuel" as our handed-down family records indicated. Good luck to you! ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph identified as Homer Alexander EMPEY which was taken at the Thompson Studio in Camden, New York. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with Homer noted as 6 months old at the time it was taken. In addition to his name and age, someone has also written "weighs 25 lbs" and "Thelma EMPEY'S Father" on the back of the photograph. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding Homer and his family: Homer EMPEY b. 9 Jan 1889 in Florence, NY to parents Livingston E. EMPEY (b 21 Sept 1854 in Florence, NY) and Alice M. COMINS (b. 1863). Homer died 9 Aug 1945 in Camden, NY. I am hoping to locate someone from this EMPEY Family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to its rightful place with family. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

The move comes two years to the day after The Times began the subscription program, TimesSelect, which has charged $49.95 a year, or $7.95 a month, for online access to its columnists' work and to the newspaper's archives. TimesSelect has been free to print subscribers to The Times, and to some students and educators. In addition to opening the entire site to all readers, The Times will also make available its archives from 1987 to the present without charge, as well as those from 1851 to 1922, which are in the public domain. The newspaper said the TimesSelect project had met expectations, drawing 227,000 paying subscribers - out of 787,000 over all - and generating about $10 million a year in revenue. "But our projections for growth on that paid subscriber base were low, compared to the growth of online advertising," said Vivian L. Schiller, senior vice president and general manager of the site, NYTimes.com. What changed, The Times said, was that many more readers started coming to the site from search engines and links on other sites instead of coming directly to NYtimes.com. These indirect readers, unable to gain access to articles behind the pay wall and less likely to pay subscription fees than the more loyal direct users, were seen as opportunities for more page views and increased advertising revenue. "What wasn't anticipated was the explosion in how much of our traffic would be generated by Google, by Yahoo and some others," Ms. Schiller said. The Times's site has about 13 million unique visitors each month, according to Nielsen/NetRatings, far more than any other newspaper site. Ms. Schiller would not say how much increased Web traffic the paper expects from eliminating the charges, or how much additional ad revenue the move was expected to generate. Those who have paid in advance for access to TimesSelect will be reimbursed on a prorated basis. The Wall Street Journal is the only major newspaper in the country to charge for access to most of its Web site, and it has nearly 1 million paying online readers. But its parent, Dow Jones & Company, is studying whether to continue the practice, according to people briefed on those talks. Rupert Murdoch, whose News Corporation is about to take over Dow Jones, has talked of the possibility of making access to The Journal free online. The Financial Times charges for access to selected material online, much as The New York Times has. The Los Angeles Times tried that model in 2005, but quickly dropped it, after seeing a sharp decline in Web traffic. Copyright 2007 The New York Times Company
