    2. Do you have any of the other names of the Peters family that lived in Utica. My family came from England and settled in Clinton, Vernon area. So would be interested to know if there were any others besides Bradley listed. Thanks. 3. Hi. My piano teacher was a woman. The name Fragetta sounds a little familiar. I knew Mr. Klossner and he was on the opposite side of the street, the last house on that side. I also knew the Benjamins. They were on the left side and possibly they were directly across from the teacher. Does this help? 3. I'm seeking information regarding Patsy's Dance Studio on Genesee St., Utica, across the street from St. Elizabeth's Hospital. I took dancing lessons from Patsy, in the 1940's. A little history of her Dance studio would be fun to know. I've checked the fultonhistory site. I had hoped that with the hundreds of newspapers there for Utica, I might find something, but I didn't. 1. [NYONEIDA] Patrick Mc Gough
    2. Deanna Smith
    3. Judge John Walsh, in his records of the Irish Pioneers of Utica, at Utica Public Library shows that Patrick Mc Gough (who would be the Patrick F. born 1855 Utica), enlisted in the Spanish-American War 1898, to be on the Ship Kanawah and that he deserted and never got aboard the ship. I have no idea who gave Judge Walsh this information as there is no source for this fact. Patrick spent his whole life in Utica, married Annie Logan I was in Washington, DC this summer doing research and made an enquiry about this in the National Archives Military History section. There was no evidence of his desertion there. Possibly because the war was such a short one. The Archivist in that Dept. did a thorough search. Recently I hired a Professional Genealogist there to see if I could get a list of the crew members of that ship. That was successful. Per that report, a Patrick Mc Gough enlisted 19 July 1898 from New York City. My question is: Why would a man from Utica, NY enlist in NY City? I presume that he would have had to take a train that distance. Surely there were other recruiting areas in the State closer to his home. I'm just curious about this. You know how that goes-the "need to know". Deanna

    1. [NYONEIDA] Dumphy/Dunphy
    2. Deanna Smith
    3. Seeking information on Martin DumphyDunphy of Utica. He is probably of Kilkenny, Ireland as that is where his sister Catherine immigrated from about 1849. She died single in the Oneida Co. Poorhouse (b. ca 1811) sometime after 1876 when she was age 65. Martin is in the 7th Ward 1860, age 54 with wife Mary age 55 and dau. May 26, 7th Ward in 1870, wife Mary, both born Ireland. I've not done any work on this family yet. I'm trying to determine if he is somehow kin to my McGoughs or McTaveys of Utica. I have a note that I can't find at the moment that he was a witness to a Naturalization of either of these families. I will be working on the Dumphys very soon, but thought perhaps someone out there may know Martin. Deanna

    1. Re: [NYONEIDA] birth records
    2. Steven Knight
    3. New York State didn't require the recording of vital statistics until about 1880 and even then it was about another 10 years before all localities complied. There was on short period about 1847-1849 when some localities did attempt to make records but it fizzled out. Therefore, no official birth records exist. The best you will be able to do is to find a record in a family Bible or a baptism record at church. -----Original Message----- From: nyoneida-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nyoneida-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Jessie Deith Sent: Friday, October 12, 2007 5:17 PM To: NYONEIDA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [NYONEIDA] birth records Does anyone have a suggestion of whom I would contact to find a birth record of a boy born Sept 22, 1822 to parents living in Bloomfield, Ontario county, New York?
