Someone from another list was kind enough to send me the URL for the Random Acts page. It is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnraogk/index.htm There are no volunteers listed for either Oneida or Otsego counties :-( Marsha
Hello all! There is a new page on the WEB at: http://www.xmission.com/~famties/cemeteries/usa-m-o.htm that is kind of a meeting place/"swap shop" for people willing to take pictures of gravestones for others in all parts of the USA-- well, in the world, now, actually! You might want to check it out; it seems really neat -- especially if your ancestors are buried in other counties or other states. So far, the following NYS counties are represented -- do you notice some serious omissions (like almost all of central NYS!) -- hope some of you will use this service and also be able to become a volunteer -- New York Allegany U.S. Alicia Howland Alleganyco@aol.com New York Cayuga U.S. Joan Kilmer Jasper@webtv.net New York Cayuga U.S. Merry Gantley Mgantley@msn.com New York Oswego U.S. Merry Gantley Mgantley@msn.com New York Lewis U.S. Grace Parsons gparsons@epix.com Possibly New York Niagara U.S. Nancy Webb Sewitsnan@yahoo.com New York Onondaga (part) U.S. Joan Kilmer Jasper@webtv.net New York Ontario U.S. Grace Parsons gparsons@epix.com Possibly New York Saratoga U.S. C. Don't forget, you will be able to get photos of your ancestors in return -- hopefully with as much care as you will put into your "random act of geneological kindness" [come to think of it, there is a page for *that* too, whose URL I have temporarily misfiled! :-)] Anyway, I hope you will check out this list and receive back lots of wonderful pictures! Hello my kind, warm, wonderful Oneida County friends! :-) I need a favor concerning the 1910 and/or 1920 US censuses for Utica, New York. I attempted to view the indexes to these from my local FHC today and was told I would have to order four microfilm rolls from St. Lake just to look at the index, when I am not even sure the family I seek is listed there. Didn't make me a happy camper, I must say. Anyway, if anyone has access to the indexes, could you tell mew if a family by the last name of EMERSON is listed in either census. This EMERSON family would include a wife's name of EDNA (Edna Best Emerson, actually) who would have been born in Frankfort, NY in February, 1887. They *might* have a son named Harvey; then again, maybe not! :-) If anyone can help me with this lookup, I will be most grateful and I will, ummmmmmm ........ do something nice back for you! [not sure what yet, but it will be nice, I promise! :-)] Thanks so much! Marsha Strong Gainesville, FL

Phil What census years are you looking for? They are public domain and are available all over the country not just in New York State. There is a index to all of the census from 1790 through 1860 and/or 70 and for some 1880, 1900 - 1910- 1920. Some specifics would be helpful. Let us know what you want and maybe someone can do the index for you - the best way is the do-it- yourself rather than blanketing the public servants for it. They are getting justifibly touchy about these things and so the records offices are charging more ane more for their services, and a lot are just refusing to do any searches at all. The one I work for is over run with blanket requests and does not hurry to get them done. I would be glad to help you and I have access to most NY Federal Census index books and a lot of the census itself and can tell you how to access them on your own.The state census is another matter but can be accessed through the facility of the Family History Centers, nationwide, no problem. The joy of this genealogical chase to me is in the discoveries I make for myself. Agnes Cloninger >From: >To: NYONEIDA-L@rootsweb.com > > hi groups , I am wondering something ........ Hi, The Sauquoit Coal Co. was run by my Grandfather George Jury in the 1930s. As the new Rte 8 has taken the land on which it once stood, does anyone know if any pictures exist of the building and if so where I might try to locate same? Or any type of records or receipts etc on this particular business. Old George had a diary farm back in the 1920s in Litchfield, N.Y. also. He was the father of Fred [my father] and William . He died in 1948 at the home of my father in the Town of Floyd, but still maintained his home above the coal office. Thank you for any help. Claire Jury Cranford North Carolina

hi groups , this note has a shotgun attached , but it`s the only way I know to reach the widest possible audience ...... Hello Cherry Wrightsettlement (I think it's one word here) is just a few miles north east of Rome. It's just a crossroads now with a building which used to belong to the Grange and is now a church. There are a couple of houses but not much else. The address of the county courthouse in Rome is at 302 N. James St. Rome, NY 13440 or you might try the Rome Historical Society at 200 Church st. Good luck. Neal Carrier MarcoBee@aol.com wrote: > Do any of you helpful people know where Wright Settlement is or was? William Kneale, his wife Margaret and five children, William, 17; Margaret,15; John,13; Thomas, 11; and Christina,8, arrived in Utica in 1827 from the Isle of Man (between Ireland and Scotland). John and Thomas were "bound out to the tobacco trade" (indentured?) and both left Utica in 1837 to enter the tobacco/cigar business in Westfield, MA. I don't know what happened to any of the others. I have some questions as to why they settled in Utica: Was there a Manx community there as there was in Cleveland? Is it likely that they traveled on the Erie Canal until their money ran out or that they paid for passage as far as their money would take them, hoping later to move on? The second question is probably unanswerable without a diary, but can anyone tell me if there were other Manxmen in the area? Christina presumably married a man named Garrett when she was in her 40s - Garrett is a name common to the Isle of Man - last known they lived in Newfield, NY. William Sr. presumably died 1862 in Utica. Any comments or observations would be welcome. Tom Kneil Wichita, KS
Good Evening... Somebody on the list made mention of Wright's Settlement a short while back. Would those interested please contact< McKirby@terragon.com> Thank you, Erwin Kirby of Grants Pass, Oregon.

I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Janice Huff and I'm the Membership Recruiter for possibly the only online genealogy society, the Enchanted Mountains Genealogy Society or EMGS, for short. Our website is located at: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Park/3294/oags.html In searching the web, I noticed that you had placed a query for a name that may be on our lists for Chautauqua, Steuben, Cattaraugus and Allegany Counties (NY) or McKean and Potter Counties (PA) and thought I would send you an invitation to search our webpage for possible further information and ask you to become a member, if you like what you see. Our society is unique, to say the least, for many reasons. As I said, we are possibly the only ONLINE genealogy society in the world and primarily deal with area information for those counties that I have mentioned....Cattaraugus and Allegany in NY and McKean and Potter in PA. (In time, however, we will be adding more surrounding counties to our lists.) Another unique feature (and I'm sure you'll like this one) is that we charge no fees, no membership dues or research costs. That's right...absolutely nothing. Our aim is strictly that...free help with your search for your family roots in our areas. Our aim is simple...to help you with your search and to make it as easy and as much fun as possible. And our meetings are unique, too. We offer "come-as-you-are" chat sessions that you choose when you'd like to participate in from the comfort of your very own home...online. Every Monday and Wednesday are open chat sessions, while Sunday is set aside for guest speakers (professionals, semi-professionals and private citizens), who offer tips and assistance to you right online, with a question and answer period that follows. In visiting the EMGS site, we're sure you'll be amazed....in fact, you'll discover genealogy in a way that you never thought possible...because it'll actually be fun! Here is a partial list of what you can find: Humor & Poetry Beginner's Guide Local cemetery records/lists News & Events Civil War Vets E-mail addresses for members Early History & Settlers Photos & Queries A monthly Newsletter and REAL people to help you If you like what you see and would like to become a member and enter your name and information underthe ListBot section or if you simply would like to add information or photos of your own, contact Mike Disorbo, EMGS President, at disorbo@froggernet.com (or write him at 2613 West River Road, Olean, NY 14760-9648 or call him at 1-716-373-0269). PBS aired an *excellent* documentary on it several years ago; maybe you could get a copy of that on tape (?). I'll ask my mother if she knows more; hope this will help for now. I feel sure there must have been a lot written on it in any NYS history book -- did you try an internet search? It has recently come to my attention that my ggfather may have been a member of the Oneida Commune in the late 1800's. Does anyone know anything about this commune or know where I can look for information regarding it? It's my understanding this Commune was the beginning of the Oneida Silver Company...
