I know there was some interest in this subject a few weeks ago and while packing my books for a move I came upon one pertaining to this. It's called "A Goodly Heritage" by Pierrepont B. Noyes and also signed by the author. It was published in 1958 by Rinehart & Co. Inc., New York. Library of Congress card # 58-7314 Pierrepont was a son of the founder of the community John H. Noyes. -- Neal F. Carrier Holland Patent, NY WAGS #776 Listowner CARRIER-L Mail List Rootsweb.com Contributor
Thanks for the info! There wouldn't happen to be any old employee records or pictures or anything like that lying around, would there? :) This may be the place, because they lived in Oriskany Falls at that time. Thanks again, Joan
Dear List members, Lyon Falls, N.Y. is in Lewis County in the SW corner near Oneida Co. Border. Newton Falls, N.Y. is near Niagra Falls, N.Y. Greig, N.Y. is in Lewis County just N. of Lyon Falls, N.Y. There are places on the web where you can find maps that you can search on the internet. Yahoo has a great maps site, and has a link from their home page on the web, but if you want the URL for your records, it is: http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py Also, there is a N.Y. State atlas and gazettteer published by Delorme, their Website is at: http://www.delorme.com Delorme P.O. Dear list members, Maybe someone can help me with a few questions? 1. Where are Lyons Falls, NY and Newton Falls, NY? 2. Where is Grieg, NY? 3. Why would the Baggs (or Boggs) Hotel in Utica, NY be the site of a marriage in 1857? Isn't that unusual for that time period? 4. How would I get records of marriages performed there? 5. Does any one recognize the family listed below? I am looking for any info on the families of Catherine ZIMMERMAN UNSEL(L) who is my gggm and Baltus UNSEL(L), my gggf. A letter I have states that Mary ZIMMERMAN (sister of my gggm) married Lawrence BECK 1/4/1857 at the Baggs (Boggs) Hotel in Utica. It states Mary was born Nov. 16, 1826 in Bavaria and that she came to this country as a young girl and settled in Greig, NY. (Is Greig noted for its German population? ) Lawrence BECK died February 15, 1914 and Mary BECK died on April 12 Unknown year. (Note: I know she was alive in 1893 as Mary was the last of the three ZIMMERMAN sisters to die and Catherine ZIMMERMAN UNSEL(L) was the first to die-July 26, 1893.) Mary ZIMMERMAN BECK died at the home of her daughter Mrs. Mayo SPRINGSTEEN near Lyons Falls. Mary had another daughter Mrs. Mary FISHER of Utica and two sons, Lawrence BECK of Lyons Falls and Caleb BECK of Newton Falls. Other names in the families of MARY and ROSA ZIMMERMAN are Mrs. Lena LEON of Camden, NJ + Mrs. Nellie SCHRAGLER also of Camden, NJ . We believe Lena and Nellie to be the daughters of Rosa ZIMMERMAN. Rosa, I had been told, married a man named SCHREIGLER but this note states Rosa's name was SCHULYER. I don't know if the name SCHUYLER was from a second marriage or is SCHREIGLER an error. Note the similarity to her daughter Nellie's name. Lena and Nellie used to correspond with their cousin Nellie (Ellen) UNSEL ROMAN-my great aunt who lived in Utica. I hope this is not too confusing and I would really appreciate the least bit of info. I did check on Grieg, Newton Falls and Lyons Falls in my atlas but couldn't find them. Thank you very much. On the I.G.I from LDS I located my ancestors Samuel MARTIN and Silence GREEN. Given is a marriage ca 1779 from Utica, Oneida, NY. When I checked with LDS the genealogist told me that the film gave no further info. Is there any record in Oneida Co., NY for this time frame? This is FIRST reference to these people that I have found in 20 yrs. of tracing, so I am very anxious to pursue this. Thanks for any assistance. Sincerely, MFinn90885@aol.com
The Hathaway Co., was headquartered in Oriskany Falls at that time. My Great-grandfather was the plant manager in 1900. They made shirts as well as woolen sweaters and other textiles there. Oriskany Falls is in the town of Augusta. Hathaway was the only company at that time that I know of that could be the one you are looking for. Richard A. Hi, I am wondering if anyone on the list knows of any woolen or sweater mills that may have been in the Augusta Township area of Oneida Co. around 1900? I just found out last night from the Oneida Co. census that my G-Grandfather and my G-Uncle worked as a dyer and winder (respectively) at a woolen and sweater mill (respectively) in 1900 and I was hoping maybe I could find out where they worked. Hello everyone, I'm new to the list and wanted to start by letting you know what I'm researching. It's my own family and the name is WHITNEY. I had no idea there were so many. Using the census of 1880 NY.,I found my G grandfather in Herkimer NY.along with my grandfather, Frank Douglas Whitney and three other children, Charles, Viola Fidelia, and Rozell. Their father was PERRY PERCY WHITNEY b. 1835-6 around the Town of Vernon, Oneida Co. He married Pamelia (Parmelia) Pullman in Herkimer in 1867 After his return from the war. I'm searching for proof of Perry's birth and his parents. Perry was in the 117th NY Vol. also called The Oneida 4th. Enlisting on the same day with Perry was LaFayette Whitney, his brother. In the 1850 Oneida Co. census listed in what apears to be a family group are eight whitneys. Joseph, Hannah, Leonard, Joseph, Philo, LaFayette, Perry, and Amanda. This census is for the town of Vernon. The 1855 census for Herkimer Co. shows a P.Whitney and P. Pullman working for L.W. Farmer and in his household. If this is Perry he is about 19 and has left home and has met Pamelia. I'm also looking for a connection to Joseph's parents. Maybe Phineas (Phinehas) in Herkimer. If anyone has seen or has a connection with any of these people I would love to hear from you. Thank you, Cliff -- Cliff Whitney 6614 Candlewood Drive Charlotte, NC 28210 Mrcliff@mindspring.com

Yes, it's I think the one piece of printed evidence about Levi. I have been trying for years to find the evidence to link him up with the family of Lovewell Thomas in Russell (Westfield) Mass., but Levi called himself 'of Paris' from the very first land deeds he was involved in. I think he ran away from home ... we all love the story of the Methodist Meeting House, which in fact we had as a family story as well. Many thanks for looking that up for me. Mary
Oho! The Dorrance line is from Plainfield and Voluntown CT, and I have traced it back to Scotland. Margery Dorrance married Levi Thomas sometime just before 1800 when they are on the census for Paris NY as just the two of them. She was b. 1774, daughter of George/Alice (Trumbull) Dorrance. A brother James Dorrance, with a wife Lucy, also appears in the land deeds in the Utica area. Margery gave away dower rights to a piece of property in Utica that I haven't had a chance to track down, so I have a working theory that she may have gone out there with either the brother or maybe even the father, who was a widower by then, but I haven't found George Dorrance on any deeds. Other chldren of George include George, b. 1768, who was in the area, John, 1770, who was in Brutus NY, Trumbull, 1774 who lived in Pittsfield MA and Margaret, 1776, who marr. Ashbel Welch of Windham CT but who also d. in Utica. Anyone look familiar? The trouble with Thomases in that area is that there was a great influx of Welsh sometime around there. Mine starts with Levi Thomas, who arrived with a new bride in time for the 1800 census. He lived in Paris and then went into Utica where he died in 1848. His children were Salmon, Levi, Margery, Trumbull Dorrance, George, Eliza Jane, Mary Oley and Amos Hull. I have only really researched the Amos Hull Thomas line (mine) though I know that Salmon and Trumbull D. went out to Delavan Wisc. Levi the son moved to NYC, and George married twice, the third time to Sarah Kellogg (this line is mentioned in the Kellogg genealogy, but with a mistake in the wife of the first Levi). I don't know the names of George's children; he was buried in 1887 in Utica. Thanks for getting in touch -- you never know, if we fill in that gap -- Mary At 17:49 14.6.99 EDT, you wrote: >I have Edward John Thomas, b 1 Oct 1853 in Paris, NY. He married and died in >PA. Hi Lynn As I used to live in Trenton Falls when I was a kid, your post caught my eye. I don't see your T.F. names listed in the T.F. cemeteries however there used to be a third cemetery there as I found the gravestones piled in the woods I used play in. I don't recall seeing any names on them (seems like they were in a very worn state) and don't remember ever seeing where they originally came from but assumed it was from an open field next to the woods. The woods have been since cut down so I imagine the stones have disappeared. Unfortunately some people don't have much reverence for our ancestors. Neal Carrier.....
