Maybe it's Ingham Mills, on the Herkimer and (I think Montgomery County) border??? Try the Herkimer county list.. People were committed to State Hospitals for many reasons in the past. Family could apply to have someone admitted. So sometimes families got rid of family members in this way. Patients had bona fide mental illnesses, mental retardation, were a little slow, dementia, or drug/alcohol addiction. Sometimes they had physical illnesses that had manifestations of these types of disorders. The farther back in time the less people knew about behavior and our brains so you'll find people admitted for epilespy even. I work in the mental health field and worked with a woman who just died at 98. She was admitted to a State facility at 13 for epilepsy after her mom died and her dad remarried. She remained in the mental health system the rest of her life. Another example, is two sisters married two brothers in my extended family. Within two months of each other they both had their spouses admitted to the State Hospital in Ogdensburg, NY. Laws prevent people from getting these old records but if there was a way for a genealogist to get old psychiatric records they often contain Social Histories which are pretty thorough documentation of the person life with parents and siblings listed. They also used to interview parents or spouses, give family dynamics, sometimes grandparents, lots of clues... For Jefferson County, NY I bought old(30's-40's) Proceedings of the Board of Supervisors. They list for each year the people who were sent to the State Hospital from this county, who petioned them to be admitted and what was wrong with the person. I'm sure these can be easily located in a public office somewhere.. As an aside they also list coroner cases that autopsies were performed on and cause of death. Faith Lustik
Yes, there is/was a Marcy State and there was/is also a Utica State Hospital. USH is now called the Mohawk Valley Psychiatric Center. I think Marcy State became the Marcy Correctional Facility and handles the criminally insane, but I'm not sure. If you go to the American Memories Map page at: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/gmdhtml/gmdhome.html Search for "Utica" The building featured in the lower right-hand corner of the map is the NYS Lunatic Asylum, Later called the State Hospital. There are newer buildings there now, but the original building still stands, and they are trying to sell it. It's on the endangered landmarks list, I believe. It's very large and impressive, but needs a lot of work. If your family ever lived in Utica, you may enjoy the rest of the map. This map is quite accurate, and you may be able to zoom in to see individual buildings all over the city. Marsha, My grandmother died in Marcy in 1945 and I've often wondered about why they put people there. My older relatives say my grandfather thought she "talked too much" so he put her there. If anyone has insight into this, I'd love to hear it. Also, sad to say, earlier--maybe in the '20s, they had several of their children removed from their home because they couldn't provide for them. Does anyone know anything about this practice? I've heard rumors of it happening quite a bit in NY, but no details. My family doesn't talk about it. Hello listers! I have recently been informed that my great aunt dies in a "mental hospital" in the 1920's -- she lived in Utica at the time, so where might this hospital have been? I seem to recall a Marcy State Hospital but was there also one in Utica proper? She was admitted for "melancholia" but never left the hospital alive. Thanks for any help/info you have! Marsha
Hi All, I am looking information on two families that lived in Vienna, Oneida Cty, New York in 1850. They are proving to be elusive and although Cheney is a common enough surname, my branch seems to have started out of thin air. I have William W. Cheney, also spelled Cheeny, as a blacksmith in Vienna in 1850, age approx 39. (census was difficult to read) born in Vermont. His wife was Betsy Eckel, full name may have been Elizabeth, age 41, born New York. A woman lived with them age 75 by the name of Barsha?(same problem with census). She was also born in Vermont, and I assume she was William's mother. I cannot find who Barsha's parents were, husband were, when she died or where. William and Betsy had six children, Louisa (my ggggrandmother), George, Ephraim, William, Emiline, and Lorenzo. The family moved enmasse to Iowa after 1860. Any help about this family and their time in Vienna would be greatly appreciated. My other stumper family is the Lofft family. Edward Lofft, born England, circa 1793 and his wife, Hellen, born Ireland, circa 1810, moved to Vienna, New York between 1840 and 1850. They came to America between 1830 and 1835 however. Where they first lived I have no idea. They had four sons, Edward, Joseph, John and William, all born in England and all with occupations of boatmen on the 1850 census. Once in America they had four more children that I know of Francis age 15 on 1850 census and born in New York. She lived with the McConnell family. Charles, Robert, (my ggggrandfather), and Martha. Two of the Lofft boys married Louisa Cheney. First John, who died between 1860 and 1865, and then Robert who married Louisa, in Iowa, in 1865. Edward's (the father) occupation at this time was shoemaker. I would like to know what happened to the siblings in this family. I know that Joseph moved to Higginsville and then New London, but past that their lives are a mystery to me. If there are any relatives out there that would like to know Robert's fate and the rest of this branch of the tree, I would willingly share everything I have. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thank You in advance. Cindy Anderson cander@ execpc.com

Has anyone every heard of a place called "Ingham Falls" or "Ingam Falls", I'm not sure of the spelling. Supposedly a Great-Aunt and Uncle are buried there. I believe it is in New York State, but I am not even sure of that. I don't know if this is the name of a town or city or if it is the name of a cemetery. Thanks, Joan Broneske unicorn@softcom.net @-->----------------
Hi, I just saw your post about Clayville, and I am in the process of researching my Great-Grandfather, William PRIMMAR. I believe he died in 1942-43 in Little Falls, NY and was buried in Clayville. I don't know where, but for some reason I am thinking Sauquoit Valley Cemetery. Do you know if there is any way I can contact them? Do they have listings of who is buried there? I can't go there physically, because I live in California. Also, my aunt and uncle, Warren and Helen PRIMMAR, used to live in Clayville until about the early 1980s, when they moved to Virginia. You wouldn't happen to be familiar with the last name, would you? Joan Broneske unicorn@softcom.net

Thanks in advance. >Best regards, Roger Eugene Mills Well I have posted a little on this before, but I am happy to do so again. I grew up in the Town of Paris, NY in what is known as the "Sauquoit (or Saghdaquadah if you go back far enough) Valley" which would include Paris, Paris Station, Paris Hill, and at the bottom of Paris Hill the villages of Sauquoit and Clayville (which was called Paris Furnace until Henry Clay visited and spoke there in the 1800's, I forget just when). The area is then, was when I lived there, and I think shall remain forever very rural, many dairy farms, lots of kids driving tractors at age 13 (we thought we were so cool!). The Lenox that you mention though is "all the way" over in Madison County and I can't speak much to that at all. I am not aware of any Mills family up "on the hill" but I will ask my mother (who was born in Clayville in 1923, served as the village clerk there for several years and whom *I* consider to be the de facto Clayville Historical Society!! :-)] If there were any Mills in Paris between 1925 and 1990, she will know! If you have any more specific queations about the area, I would be happy to give them a go! Hello Everyone, Thank you to all who answered my query about Litchfield. You have all been most helpful. I now even have a map which shows Litchfield in Herkimer County, as well as Utica, Whitestown, & NY Mills where other ancestors resided. Jane

Hello Listers: I'm working on my MILLS line and would love a little info from those of you more familiar with Oneida Co. (I'm in California) My GGgrandfather DAVID MILLS was son to WILLIAM and MARY TAGGART MILLS. David was born 1814 in Hillsborough Co., NH. Then sometime soon after that, the family was in Paris, Oneida Co., NY where son's CYRUS TAGGART MILLS (founder of MILLS COLLEGE, Oakland, CA) and WILLIAM GILES MILLS were born. According to family records, William and Mary died when the boys were young (1820-30?) and the boys were subsequently raised by an "Aunt Rebecca". Also mentioned is a REV. ALVAH DAY. William and Mary are said to be buried in LENOX. A primer on the locale from a knowing individual would be great. Thanks in advance. Best regards, Roger Eugene Mills

I too had been searching for Litchfield, NY and had found one in Tioga Co. near the PA border. E-mail with experts there showed that this Litchfield is, in fact, in Bradford Co., PA, not in NY, even though various map programs showed it in NY. There is a Litchfield in NY, which did not show up on map programs, in Herkimer Co. It is Litchfield township, and the Herkimer Co. web site has a page on Herkimer County Place Names, including Litchfield township, [http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyherkim/hplaces.html]. A page is also provided on the town of Litchfield itself, formed from German Flatts in 1796. It also states that may early settlers came directly to the frontier of Litchfield from CT and other New England states. This page has a link to the 1800 census of Litchfield and other on-line source material. [http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyherkim/litch.html]. Linda Kmiecik
There is a Town of Litchfield in Herkimer County. Towns in New York State are the next lower division of government below the counties; that is to say each county contains many towns. These towns, in turn may contain many small communities. Incorporated cities may be located within the boundaries of a town, but are separate from them, government-wise. I went looking for a map I saw long ago which shows the townships as of 1898, and have finally found it. It is called Tunison's railroad, distance, and township map of New York from latest surveys. and is located at the Library of Congress American Memory web site. Go to: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/gmdhtml/gmdhome.html below the graphic at the top of the page, on the line that starts "Search" Click on the "Creator Index" link. Find and click on the alphabetic group which includes Tunison - It says Soderberg (F. & H.) (Firm), but I believe that could change if they add more maps. Scroll down to Tunison, E. L. A small map will appear. Click on it. What you do then may vary according to your equipment. I choose 640x480 and the second dot after "Zoom In", then click on the general Utica area. The map will scroll if you re-click to adjust the map to the area you wish to view. The city of Utica is close to the Oneida-Herkimer County line. The town of Litchfield is below and slightly to the right of it, colored in green. I assume this is the Litchfield you seek. There are many wonderful maps available through this site. Spend some time browsing from the links on the page whose address I gave above. It is possible to download a viewer, and the maps which interest you to your computer so you can examine them off-line at your leisure. It may be a better way to view them, but I haven't tried it. If you follow the cities and town links there are some of the perspective drawn maps that were once popular. I have been able to identify my great-grandfather's house in Utica on one of them. Mary H maryh@telenet.net PS: How about the last name "Georgens"? I have a couple of those in my records. I am not related to them, but my great-uncle married Carrie Geiersbach, whose sister was married to a man named George Georgens. They were from Utica, but I think lived in the NYC area later.
